The Eastern Michigan Region planning committee has put together a fantastic fall weekend in Detroit Michigan for the members of the NSP Central Division. I’m very happy as your leader that you made the commitment to join your fellow NSP Central Division members at this meeting. My only wish is that you go back and tell your NSP friends and colleagues what a great meeting experience you had and that they should plan on attending next year’s meeting. The Fall Central Division meeting has many purposes. The most important is this: the information that is shared with you the member. The Information is the pulse of the NSP from the local to the National level. There is no replacement for the networking you can do with members from all over the Division. This helps you and your patrol to learn different methods and techniques that are available and are successful. ,Q P\ ¿UVW IXOO \HDU DV \RXU 'LYLVLRQ 'LUHFWRU , KDYH OHDUQHG DQG JDLQHG D PDJQLWXGH RI knowledge about our organization the NSP. We need to continue to educate the NSP members on the value of the organization to the members. We owe it to the skiing public to have as much knowledge as we can about the NSP, the skiing industry and our home area. We as leaders of the Division need to help other members understand there is a lot of knowledge to gain and continue the learning process. The Awards banquet is always a great time to observe how the members of the NSP Central Division are being recognized for all their accomplishments and for their effort and dedication to the NSP. I hope this weekend and season is a fantastic and rewarding experience for you. I hope to see you on the snow this season! Welcome and thank you for your volunteering and support of the NSP Central Division programs. Sincerely Mike Schons 2014 Central Division Fall Meeting Page 3 Greetings from National Ski Patrol Welcome Central Division Patrollers: It is an exciting time in the National Ski Patrol. We have a new Executive Director, John McMahon, to help steer our NSP Ship. John comes to us from the ski industry and most recently from Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce. He brings a wealth of experience to his role and we are already seeing exciting things coming from him. Unfortunately he can’t be with us at this meeting. However, he has been to the Central Division already, just a few short weeks ago, he addressed the Midwest Ski Area Association. Along with JT and myself we discussed what is happening in the NSP and how the Joint Statement of Understanding is an important document we all need to stand behind. I will use some of the slides from the MSAA meetings when I address the CD on Saturday morning. I will also give you a look ahead toward the future of where the NSP is headed by laying out the priorities for the National Organization. In the meantime, we have a few guests running for the National Board that you need to meet and discuss their thoughts and views on what is important to the National Organization. Our very own Central Division leader Brian Cobble is with us. As you know, Brian has been our Division Director when I stepped into my new role as a National Board Member. Brian also was our Assistant DD for my entire time as your DD. Brian has been involved in many national meetings and certainly has helped set the direction of the CD for many years as one of our important leaders. Another important leader on the National front is Bill Sinykin, Division Director for Intermountain Division. Bill has been in his role as DD for a number of years and replaced me as the leader of the Division Director team when I went to the National Board. Bill and Brian will be addressing us at the Saturday morning General Session. You need to be there for a better understanding of what these gentlemen feel are important for leading our organization. In the meantime if you can get with them for some one on one time or to get that certain question burning at you, please find them Friday evening. I know they have other commitments and may not be with us for the whole weekend. Now, the most important message of all. Even though it may not necessarily seem like it at times, much of what we do at the National level is to support the everyday patroller. Over the next few weeks our Central Division leadership will go over all the resumes of each board candidate and will evaluate what they feel are the most important attributes of each. From that will come a ranking of what they feel will be the best candidates from the list. You can take their word for it or do your own evaluation and ranking and make your decisions. What is important is that “YOU” vote during this election cycle; however you decide to make your evaluation. That way it ensures that the democratic process works and the people you put on the Board in fact represent what you feel is important. It is also important that others that are not here today also get the message that they need to vote. Of the people at this meeting, we only represent about 2% of the CD population. So it is important that we the leaders of the division, that is “YOU”, are helping our brothers and sisters in patrolling understand just how important this right is to them. After all, the future of our National Organization and the future of patrolling is clearly in the hands of “YOU”. Mike and his team have done a wonderful job of preparing a full event schedule for you to take advantage of this weekend. Please make sure you talk with others to learn what is going on in other parts of the Division and pick up those important tips that will help you or others to bring it to the next level in patrolling. Thanks for being you and helping make patrolling the exciting and enriching experience it is.
