ShareLife Accomplishments in 2014
Every Lenten season parishioners in the Archdiocese of Toronto
have demonstrated the strength of Catholic charity through
their support of ShareLife. Our parish campaign, along with our
corporate and school appeals, collectively raised over $14.2 million
in 2014 to support the work of our agencies. We are truly grateful
for this outpouring of concern and generosity for those who turn to
ShareLife agencies for help.
ShareLife is the annual charitable appeal of the Archdiocese of
Toronto, raising funds to help support a large family of Catholic
agencies. ShareLife’s social service agencies provide over 381,000
services in more than 20 different languages to over 114,000
people in our Archdiocese on an annual basis, and countless more
in developing countries around the world.

“(The common good…) It means
protecting people, showing loving
concern for each and every person,
especially children, the elderly, those
in need, who are often the last we
think about.” Pope Francis
Pope Francis reminds us that while we are going about our daily
routine, we should strive to support the common good in all that
we do. How often are we reminded to take a moment to think
about the person who will be sleeping on the street tonight or the
single, pregnant teen who has been abandoned by their relatives,
or the family who is trying to cope with the sudden passing of their
parent.
As we think about these realities in our society, we know that, as
a Catholic faith community, we are called to put the hands of Christ
into action, to make a difference in the lives of those in need in our
communities. When we collectively come together, we can make a
greater impact and this is where ShareLife comes in.
Starting in 1976 with only eight agencies, Archbishop Pocock
made a courageous decision to establish the ShareLife appeal in
the Archdiocese of Toronto. Today, our campaign has grown to raise
over $12 million on an annual basis, supporting families in crisis,
people with special needs, the elderly, immigrants and refugees,
and children and youth. ShareLife-funded agencies also provide for
the education of our priests and deacons, and support international
programs through Development and Peace, the Pastoral Mission
Fund, and Canadian Food for Children.
This year, parishioners are being asked to support the Pastoral
Plan through the Family of Faith Campaign. While we do so, we
need to continue to support the work of ShareLife agencies.
There is no duplication of effort—the ShareLife campaign remains
responsible for funding social service agencies and international
programs. I invite you to join me in making a sacrificial gift to the
2015 ShareLife campaign to the best of your ability to do so.
Pope Francis reminds us that charity is not a social obligation,
but a matter of ‘showing loving concern for each and every person.’
In our parishes, our schools, and our communities, we share
this love by extending our generosity toward others through the
ShareLife appeal, helping to work wonders in the lives of those who
need our help the most. Together we are making a difference—
together we are working wonders!
May our Lord bless you always.

The following is an excerpt from an actual letter written by a grateful client named Sue to Jane, the
group facilitator. Sue received the necessary help she needed to develop and maintain important healthy
relationships with herself and those closest to her following her group participation in the Catholic Family
Services Durham Women’s help group.
Dear Jane,
I want to start by saying thank you.
When I first found out I had to attend
group I’ll be honest I was not very happy.
I figured I don’t need this. But every
session I began to realize more and
more not only about myself, but that I
had been in very unhealthy and abusive relationships, not just with the
men that I chose, but also others around me. This group has provided
the educational tools that I will carry with me for the rest of my life as I
want to be a social worker and help abused individuals.

People with Special Needs
St. Jude’s Academy of the Arts is
like a second home for Sonia, and the
other participants and employees are
her extended family.
St. Jude’s provides Sonia with a
secure, comfortable environment
where she can express herself through
the performing arts program and
just be herself. Not usually comfortable in crowds, or even in the
company of others, the program is something she looks forward
to attending every day. As a result, she has more exposure to
the community, her peers, and regular social interaction with
individuals. The routine and stability that St. Jude’s offers helps
Sonia to thrive and the program has had a wonderful, positive
impact on her and others like her.

St. Michael’s Homes / Matt Talbot Houses This group of newcomers
(immigrants and refugees) do not
qualify for Canadian funded support
and as such are often unable to
acquire the information and services
that could assist them in successfully
settling into life in Canada. Many
refugee claimants have escaped very difficult circumstances in
their home country and are often traumatized by the time they
arrive in Canada. This group is the most marginalized subset of
the newcomer and immigrant community. Although Catholic
Crosscultural Services provides some help to this group, they
are growing in number and there is not enough support in the
community to fully address their needs.
Last year, ShareLife agencies provided settlement, advocacy and education programs for more than 40,000
immigrants and refugees to the GTA.

Kendra the “Growing As Parents”
program every Friday, providing
her and other young moms with
essential information they needed,
dealing with issues like post-partum
depression, separation anxiety and
other emotions related to pregnancy.
The Supper Club, a weekly dinner and
learning program, offered her and
the group the opportunity to discover life and employment skills,
learn budgeting, and address self-esteem issues. Scrapbooking was
a third program offered to Kendra and the other young mothers to
build important memories for themselves and their young babies.
“My life has changed dramatically because of Vita Centre as I
now have connected with new mothers.” explains Kendra, “ Vita

and unconditional love and support. I feel I can now pass this loving
care on to others.”

Kiwayne grew up in foster care and,
at 17, struggled to live on his own.
He found himself on the street until a
friend told him about Covenant House.
“I was going down the wrong path
and didn’t know if I’d live to be 21,”
he says.
For the past two years, Kiwayne has been studying construction
engineering at George Brown College and working part-time at
the Provincial Advocate’s Office. “Covenant House gave me stable
housing that allowed me to go back to school and learn life skills.”
To help raise awareness of the plight of homeless youth and their
potential for success, Kiwayne shared his story with news media

There are an estimated 65,000 Canadian homeless youth. In Toronto, as many as 10,000 young people
spend some time on the street every year. Recent studies show that homeless youth are 11 times more
likely to die young than their peers. Through Covenant House and other ShareLife-supported agencies, we
can make a positive difference and provide compassionate care in the lives of youth in crisis.
