OMHC Welcomes New Provider Odessa Memorial Healthcare Center announces the addition of Danny Jones, PA-C, to the provider team at OMCH. “DJ” and his wife, Angie, plan to build a home in Odessa and have already started the complicated process. They currently reside in Medical Lake, where they will reside until their home is complete. Until their home is completed DJ will make overnight accommodations in Odessa when he is on call for the Emergency Room. Small communities are not new for DJ. He moved to Almira during his middle school years and completed his primary education there. The couple looks forward to becoming part of the community and DJ especially looks forward to lending a helping hand to those in need of care. Angie cares for people in a different way. She works part-time as a massage therapist in Medical Lake and hopes to find a practice location in Odessa. Jones attended the University of Washington, School of Medicine to complete his Physician Assistant Training Program in 2008. Later, PA-C Jones opted to obtain additional training and earned his Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Nebraska in 2011. DJ has a very broad skillset. He was trained as a surgical technologist in the US Navy and served in the Surgical Shock Trauma Platoon in Iraq in 2004. He continues his service to our nation as a Captain in the Army National Guard as a PA-C. After leaving active duty, DJ worked as a surgical technologist at Sacred Heart Medical Center and at Rockwood Clinic. After receiving his PA degree, he worked for the Cosmetic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery Clinic at Rockwood both seeing clinic patients and spending time as a first assistant to the surgeon during operations. DJ later went to work in the Valley Hospital Emergency Department where he will continue until his start with Odessa in May. DJ plans to continue service in the Army National Guard as a PA-C. This active duty includes one weekend per month and two weeks per year. Occasionally they call him at other times to help care for troops in Washington state. He is currently the only PA in Eastern Washington for the Guard. Please feel free to call the Odessa Clinic at (509) 982-2614 to make an appointment with DJ Jones, Dr. Powell or with Dr. Craig Olson. As a reminder, Dr. Soren Olson and Dr. Alan Danielson come to Odessa periodically to serve your orthopedic needs, and Dr. Deanna Davidson comes weekly on Wednesdays for surgical and endoscopy appointments. All appointments can be initiated through the front desk at the Odessa Clinic. Lincoln County Public Hospital District No. 1 d.b.a. Odessa Memorial Healthcare Center (OMHC) operates three entities for Odessa and the surrounding service community of approximately 2,500 citizens. It is the largest employer in the immediate area. OMHC is a 25-bed Critical Access Hospital . There are 24-hour Level V emergency room care and basic EMS ambulance services. Odessa Rural Health Clinic provides family medical care M-F, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Quail Court, a 12-unit assisted living facility, is also on the campus. Page 2 Spring 2014 Volume 6, Issue 1 Coast to Coast Health Care to Provide Relief Coverage Recently you may have read in the Odessa Record about relief doctors who would be coming from time to time to provide help in Odessa. We created quite a buzz around town that Linda Powell, MD was leaving OMHC. We want to take this opportunity to inform our District and community that Dr. Powell is not retiring and is continuing to provide services as a physician and the Medical Director for OMHC. She has given this community almost 22 years of dedicated, quality service and has no plans to leave at this time. However, it is important that we bring good physicians to Odessa so Doctor Powell can have days off and be able to take vacation and family time. We have started searching for an additional permanent physician to join Dr. Powell and DJ Jones, PA-C. We know it generally can take 2-5 years to find such a doctor and want to use due diligence in planning for the future with the hope of having two doctors and one PA to serve your needs. In order to cover physician relief needs that occur, OMHC made the decision to contract with a group of doctors called Coast to Coast Health Care. They specialize in staffing rural hospitals and have the qualifications required for Odessa. OMHC felt that by using the same group of providers, we could give continuity and continue to deliver the best possible care to the patients. All Coast to Coast doctors have the required certifications for working at OMHC: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS). In addition, these physicians are already successful at integrating Family Medicine with Emergency Medicine, something also required for Odessa. One of these doctors will be here only to fill in when relief is needed, but we wanted to take this opportunity to introduce them to you. Paula Silha, MD is the Director of Coast to Coast Health Care and will be one of the doctors helping in Odessa. She is a Board Certified Family Practitioner, who graduated Medical School from the University of Washington. She spent 11 years working in emergency departments in Spokane, and joined Coast to Coast four years ago. She grew up in a town with a population of 600 and is excited to contribute to healthcare in Odessa. Her leisure time includes spending time with her two college age children and spouse of 29 years and many hobbies including competitive tennis, back packing, hiking and volunteering at the homeless clinic in Spokane. Merry Alto, MD graduated from the University of Washington Medical School, did her internship at Deaconess Hospital and completed Residency at the Mayo Clinic in Radiation Oncology. She is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and works at Valley Hospital ER in Spokane Valley. Peter Viavant, MD graduated from the University of Utah School of Medicine, with residency at University of Utah/Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City. He is Board Certified in Family Medicine. He currently does ER work in several hospitals in Eastern Washington and is on the board at Walla Walla General Hospital and board member in the Student Health Options Program. Mary Klingner, MD graduated from Medical School at University of Missouri – Columbia School of Medicine with her Family Practice Residency at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. She is currently Chief of Medical Staff at Quincy Valley Medical Center and works as a Family Physician and ER provider there. She has been Emergency Department Director and Trauma Coordinator. With experience in Family Medicine, Women’s Health and ER, she also fits all qualifications needed for Odessa. Jill Jenkins, MD graduated from the University of Washington School of Medicine and completed her Residency at Family Medicine Spokane. She is certified in Family Medicine and currently works as an Emergency Physician and at the Deaconess Hospital Hyperbaric Wound Care Consultants. With her past experience in Family Medicine, ER, Urgent Care, Occupational Medicine, wound care, and other rural area Critical Access Hospitals and Rural Health Clinics, she is ideal for Odessa relief. We are sure the community and surrounding area can appreciate OMHC’s dedication to giving quality care Page 3 by using qualified professionals here. We want your business and of course need your business in order to be here for many years to come. With the addition of DJ Jones, PA-C to our staff in May (see article on front page), Linda Powell, MD and Craig Olson, MD, we will continue to follow our mission of “bringing caring, quality healthcare to our community.” Odessa Healthcare Foundation Highlights Submitted by the Odessa Healthcare Foundation Members of the Odessa Healthcare Foundation have been busy planning for the 23rd Annual Wine Tasting and Auction since last fall. In November, the group chose the projects which receive funding from the proceeds of the 2014 event. The majority will go toward the purchase of a handheld point-of-service medical lab instrument, which can more easily be used by the nursing staff when lab staff is not available on evenings and weekends. Although an efficient and economical addition, this item is not critically needed and did not make OMHC’s capital budget purchase list for this year, so would not be purchased without OHF’s contribution. The smaller “funded item” chosen is an EKG machine to be used in the Emergency Department. A special item featured in this year’s live auction is a collection of Hospital Guild/Auxiliary Cookbooks. The long-standing organization has disbanded and donated its current cookbook inventory to OHF. Foundation members agreed to take over their Health-Related Scholarships, using proceeds from the sale of cookbooks to fund the scholarships. Many of the usual “tried-and- true” items such as concerts, musicals, getaways, and quilts are included in the Live Auction, as well as several new items such as a Zip-Line package, loaded purse choice item, and a season’s slip at Keller Ferry Dock. The Houseboat Weekend is back. The Ace-in-the-Hole drawing is again a feature this year. As usual, volunteers come out in force. These volunteers, along with the generous contributors of auction items, and those who purchase the items, combine to make the event a huge success year after year. OMHC Wants Patient Feedback Odessa Memorial Healthcare Center wants to know how you are feeling. If you’ve been a hospital patient, you may receive a phone call from a survey team. OMHC has recently partnered with HealthStream Research, Inc., a nationally-recognized healthcare improvement firm. HealthStream will be conducting telephone surveys to receive feedback on services and experiences. As of April 1st, HealthStream has been calling recently discharged hospital inpatients. By using HealthStream, the district will be able to compare our patient feedback with the best hospitals in the country. Discharged patients will be contacted by telephone by a HealthStream representative to maintain confidentiality and measures their perceptions of their hospital experience. Patients can give feedback about their experience and can also provide comments about specific staff if they wish. In addition to partnering with HealthStream, we at OMHC are asking that you participate in a short perception survey to help us better understand your perceptions, needs and priorities relative to the services we provide. Your input is vitally important to help us better serve you now and in the future. The responses are anonymous, unless you choose to leave your name and contact information. We welcome you to do so, if you would like a response back on an issue. Otherwise, we will gladly accept all anonymous input. Please go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NDLLG7W to get started. We estimate it will take approximately 5 minutes to complete. While we encourage electronic participation, if you do not have access to do so, we will gladly provide a paper survey for you. Please stop by the front desk at the hospital or clinic and ask for a paper copy. If that’s not possible, we will mail one to Odessa area residents if you provide your name and address. You can call (509) 982-2611 to do so. Thank you for helping us serve you better! Page 4 Spring 2014 Volume 6, Issue 1 Provider’s Corner Recently OMHC hosted four University of Washington Job Shadow students for one week. The program is designed to expose the next generation of healthcare professionals to the specific healthcare needs of rural and underserved communities in Washington. By giving them this interactive experience, it is hoped to inspire them to further their commitment to healthcare. This year’s students shadowed Dr. Linda Powell, Nursing, Physical Therapy and Ted Bruya, Pharmacist at Odessa Drug. Not only do they shadow during the day, they are introduced to rural living and get to experience things they might never see in the urban area. Photo courtesy of the Odessa Record. Pictured left to right: Jane Kwon, shadowing Dr. Powell; Michelle Cheng, shadowing Pharmacist Ted Bruya; Chelsey McKenzie, shadowing RN’s Kristi Finck and Jessica Ibarra; Catherine Cheng, shadowing Physical Therapist Beth Schafer. This program which started in 2003 has continued to grow each year, with over 110 participants across the State in 2014. The impact of the experiences that students bring back from the clinics is apparent in the reflections they write of how this trip made a positive impact on their lives and in the ways they are able to describe of how it opened up their eyes about rural or underserved clinics. OMHC is proud to have been part of this program for over 8 years. By continuing to be a part of this Job Shadow called Project HOPE, we might be promoting the return of these students to one day work in a rural area. Wound Care One of the services that Odessa Memorial Healthcare Center has available is Wound Care Management. The care is inclusive to the level necessary to promote timely wound healing, and can include Medical Providers, Registered Nurses, Registered Dietitian consults, and Wound Care Specialists available by telehealth. This service is performed on an outpatient basis following a treatment regimen prescribed by a provider. Your healing progress is monitored, evaluated and modified to provide the best outcome possible. Two Registered Nurses at OMHC, Caitlin Higley and Diana Finkbeiner, completed a Wound Care Management course through the University of Washington Nursing Education. If you have need of this service, please contact the Odessa Clinic at 982-2614, or Odessa Memorial Healthcare Center at 982-2611 and ask for Caitlin or Diana. New Nursing Assistants at OMHC Earlier this year, OMHC had a Nursing Assistant Training Class with 5 students. The class was held for 5 weeks and provided instruction and clinical practice to prepare the students to become Nursing Assistants and be eligible to take the Washington State Certification test. After completing the class, 4 of the students chose to join the OMHC staff. Newly hired were Laura Erwin, Michelle Godwin, Abby Hatten and Mallarie Pierce. The other student in the class was Ellie Sligar who is currently working in Moses Lake. We are thrilled to have these 4 new NA-C’s as part of our team at OMHC. Spring Health Article Tips for Fighting Spring Allergies With spring rains, there's more mold growth inside and outside your home. Flowers, trees, weeds, and grasses also begin to blossom. Spring cleaning will stir up dust mites throughout the house as well. Keep Pollen Under Control. To tame pollen, wash bedding every week in hot water. Wash your hair and shower before going to bed, since pollen can accumulate in hair. Clean Every Surface. Wear a mask and gloves when cleaning, vacuuming, or painting to limit dust and chemical exposure. Vacuum twice a week. Wash Rugs. Limit throw rugs to reduce dust and mold. If you do have rugs, make sure they are washable. Keep Indoor Air Clean. Keep windows closed to reduce pollen entering the house. Change filters in air conditioning units and vents frequently this time of year. Consider Allergy Medicine. Talk to your doctor about a seasonal allergy drug that may be appropriate for your symptoms. OMHC Welcomes Two New Commissioners I was born and raised on a farm just outside Odessa. Auxiliary Members: Judy Iverson, Sandi Smith, Clarene Haynie, Careymae Jasman, Marlys Kissler, Joyce McClanahan, Sally Siegel, Debbie Walter, Darlene Edens and Carol Robey Success Stories I had knee replacement on both of my knees at once which was a huge surgery. After I was discharged from the hospital, I came to Odessa Memorial Healthcare to get rehabilitation in their Swing bed. Without a doubt, I know I could not have survived and improved without the care I received in Odessa. The RNs, CNAs, physical therapy and Doctor Powell’s compassion and care was amazing. I did not have one complaint and would recommend anyone to seek their care at OMHC. I have even offered to be a volunteer when needed. Thank you to all of the staff for my wonderful care. - Ramona Nelson Page 7 Statistics Services Provided Acute— Cardiac Telemetry, Medicare Swing Beds Available Emergency Room— 100% RN’s ACLS Certified and Trauma Certified, Heliport, District Operated Ambulance Services, Prompt Service and Minimal Wait Times Long Term Care—DSHS Accepted, Daily Activity Program Laboratory—Results Electronic to Odessa Clinic or Other Radiology/EKG —Results Electronic to Odessa Clinic or Other Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy/ Athletic Training Speech Therapy Dietitian Consults Outpatient Procedures— Endoscopy, Infusion Therapy and Injections Social Services Clinic— Choice of Multiple Providers, On-site Specialists for Orthopedic Surgeries, Coordination with other Specialists, Phone Calls Returned Promptly, Women’s and Men’s Health/Physicals, Well-Baby Checks/Pediatrics, Foot Care, Certified Urine Drug Testing, Mammography, DOT Physicals (As of March 2014) Hospital: Quail Court: Total Patient Days — 3 Occupancy Rate — 89% Rehabilitation Days— 75 Clinic: Long Term Care Days— 2,043 Total Visits — 1,012 ER Visits — 67 District: Ambulance Runs — 29 Full Time Equivalence — 63.2 PT Visits — 448 Lab Tests — 1,708 X-Ray Tests — 121 Occupancy Rate — 94% 12-Unit/12-Bed Assisted Living Facility: Quail Court OMHC was pleased to unveil their new My Health Record Patient Portal this past fall.
