OLYMPIC RUNNER DROPS IN
SIXTH FORM ROTARY CLUB
Thanks to everyone who supported the Cake Sale on
Tuesday 4th Feb. Members of the Sixth Form Rotary Club
organised the cake sales to raise money for the charities
they are supporting this year.
Conrad Williams, the Team GB 400m runner, (pictured
above) dropped in on the Wandsworth Sports hall athletics
competition that Bevin hosted last week. The runner, who
was part of the 4x400m British team that took 4th position
at London 2012, found time to pass on some tips to our
Year 7&8 teams. The advice clearly sunk in with the Year 8
team taking Gold medal and winning the right to represent
the borough as the boys’ team in the Central London finals
and hopefully the London Youth Games.
YEAR 9 OPTIONS
Thank you to all parents who attended the Year 9 Options
evenings on 5th & 6th February. The information booklets
handed out are available on the school website for those
parents who were not able to attend. Year 9 Parents
Evening will be on Wednesday 5th March when there will
be further opportunity to discuss options with your son’s
individual teachers.

WE ARE COLLECTING ...
Sainsbury’s Active Kids 2014
Bring tokens to the school office.
Closing Date 26th June 2014
BOX TOPS FOR BOOKS
Bring tokens to Library. Closing
date is Monday 24th March.
The aim of the Rotary Club is to help young people
develop leadership skills, help others in their communities,
understand the importance of individual endeavour and
develop an understanding of international community.
They also held a charity football match staff v students
before Christmas.
Rizwan Wahhad 12CI writes about the match:
“The match was on Friday 13th December and the bad luck
associated with the date seemed to strike the staff first when
Nasek easily squared the ball across the box for captain,
Warwick to tap home with the first attack of the game.
It was the first time our team had played together and we
were bound to be somewhat off the pace, as the game
dragged on. Despite some heroics in defence our resistance
broke down and we were facing an embarrassing 5-1
scoreline. However a spirited comeback saw substitutes
Callum and Zahir drag us back to 5-3. The momentum was
clearly shifting and a nervous set of staff called it a day.
Goals on the staff side came from Mr Dickie, Mr Barkley
and Mr Omo with Mr Khadir bagging a brace. Special
mention to Mr Chabbibi ‘the Moroccan Magician’ who kept
us amused with a few handballs and appalling misses!
Thanks to all the staff who took part: Mr Reeves, Mr Barkley,
Mr Dickie, Mr McNeil, Mr Omo & Mr Khadir and our Rotary
Club team of Warwick, Dominic, Evi, Abdi, Pira, Anish, Siri,
Nasek & myself.”
So far the Sixth Formers have raised over £100 through
two cakes sales and football match. This money will be
donated to a Homeless charity. They are also planning a
larger fund raising effort in the summer to raise money for
an international charity.
COLLEGE COUNCIL
FRIENDS OF ERNEST BEVIN
The College Council met on Thursday 30th January with
representatives from all years except the Year 11 & 12 reps
who sent their apologies.
Mr Sullivan attended the meeting and answered questions
that had been brought up in previous meetings. He explained
that the locks in the toilets had been fixed and that the old
referral room could be used for Year/Full council meetings
if it was free.
He also talked about the school’s healthy eating policy and
why fruit juices (containing natural sugars) were sold in the
canteen but that fizzy drinks would not be sold and could
be confiscated if brought into college.
The council also discussed a new Mentoring Programme
that is being setup involving 25-30 pupils who will either
volunteer or be invited to take part in training. A new
campaign to boost recycling, by re-instating recycling reps
for each tutor base and ensuring the orange bags are used
properly, has been launched. Each year group was given the
chance to discuss issues that were of concern. To find out
more about the College Council please talk to your tutor
group or year rep.
Mr Clarke
Do you recognise any of these boys? Is your Dad or Uncle
amongst them? We think they are Yellow Ties who started at
Ernest Bevin in 1978 with a Blue Tie (second from left) who
is looking after them. We would like to hear from these boys
or any former students of Ernest Bevin (or its predecessor
schools). Former pupils can sign up to our Alumni network
via the links of the school’s website or directly on the Future
First website

LONDON SCHOOLS JUDO CHAMPIONSHIPS
VOLLEYBALL
The London Schools Judo Competition is a Selection
event for the British school Judo Championships where
Ernest Bevin topped the medal table to become national
schools champions in 2013. It was held at the University
of East London, Sportsdock on Saturday 25th January. The
importance of the event is that a top two finish will gain
automatic selection to the British Schools Championships
later in March.
With many of our elite squad members now unable to
compete in this year’s event due to entry criteria which
restricts national squad members and medallists, this year
sees the rebuilding of the EBC squad with several junior
members looking to gain selection for this year’s national
schools champs.
All members of the Bevin team fought with high levels
of enthusiasm and endeavour. There were notable
performances from Festus Ahorlu, Yr 11 and Ellis Mersh,
Yr8 who both won Gold Medals in their categories.
Mr Bonti
Well done to the U16 Volleyball squad who qualified for the
last 8s of the National Cup at the end of January.
Half term will remain busy for all volleyballers. On Sunday
16th February, spectators are welcome to come and cheer
on the U18 squad in their next National League fixture, a
triangular against St Albans and Tendring. We will also be
hosting the London Winter Cup on Sunday 23rd February
for the U12s and U13s.
Plus Volleyball camp will be running for Years 7 &8 on
Monday 17th & Tuesday 18th February and for selected
U16 squad members on Wednesday 19th & Thursday 19th
February from 10-3pm with lunch from 12-2pm.

competition last summer have been nominated for the
