24th NUGA GAMES (OAU 2014)

FUNAAB sport team featured in the 24thNUGA GAMES, tagged OAU 2014 at
ObafemiAwolowo University, Ile-Ife, from 11th to 22nd February 2014. OAU came
out with a popular slogan for the games, sounding it loud and clear, that, it was
time to “DROP THE BOOKS AND LACE THE BOOTS”.For FUNAAB, it is not
all the students that qualified to lace their boots, therefore the few students that
represented the university at OAU 2014 “DROPPED THE BOOKS AND LACED
THE BOOTS”

The entire Directorate of sports, coaches and the athletes went, competed and
ultimately victorious in different events during the Games.
FUNAAB featured in nine sports at this year’s NUGA GAMES. These includes:
Athletics (Track and Field events), Tennis, Table Tennis, Squash, Badminton,
Chess, Taekwondo, Hockey and Cricket.
Previous performance
FUNAAB has been a modest performer in the previous Games; we have made our
marks and shown brilliantly on many occasions. The record performance of
FUNAAB in NUGA Games is dated back to UNILAG ’98 in Lagos States, where
FUNAAB coasted to a Medal haul of Five Gold, Three Silver and One Bronze
Medal.
AtUNIBEN 2011 Benin City Edo State, FUNAAB sport team put up a golden
performance in different sports, these includes, A Gold in Taekwondo, One
Silverand one Bronze in Table Tennis, One Bronze in Squash, a bronze
inHockey, then a silver and a bronze in Badminton. Other sports without
medals were outstanding and competed graciously in their various events.
EXPLOIT AT OAU 2014
FUNAAB put up a GOLDEN performance at Ile Ife, the town where
ObafemiAwolowo University is situated, the host of the 24th NUGA GAMES.
FUNAAB arrived at Ile Ife on Wednesday 12th February 2014 and was
welcomed by a host of security personnel checking the arriving universities.
Soon after we settled into the school and we all felt the cold atmosphere of
harmattan. The Games was declared officially open on Saturday 16th
February 2014, with about 63 universities in attendance.
FUNAAB’ Sport team participated in nine Sports, which include, Athletics
(Track and Field) Taekwondo, Table Tennis, Tennis, Squash, Badminton,
Chess, Hockey and Cricket.

Preparation
This year preparation has beenimpaired by the recent face off between Academic Staff Union of
Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government. It could be recalled that ASUU went on six
month strike from July 2013 to December 2013, paralyzing all academic and related activities,
thus, hampering our preparations for the Games. With the recent call off of the strike and the
immediate resumption of students, theDirectorate of sport and the entire sport community have
swung into action and the athletes are all in full training sessions,we hope and believe that by the
grace of God we are battled ready to put up golden performances.
Outstanding Athletes and Stars to watch out for.
The most outstanding athlete of the entire FUNAABteam, incidentally is a female
athlete in Taekwondo, AramideOpeyemi, she is a national player that has
represented Nigeria in many international competitions. She was the only athlete of
the FUNAAB team that won Gold medal in fly weight category (women) in the
last NUGAGamesatUniversity of Benin, UNIBEN 2011, Edo state.

Games, we believe that by the grace of God the gold shall dangles on her neck.
Tennis:AjibadeAbimbolaAishat stands out as a medal hopeful going by her
present form in the game, she is presently a top female tennis player at the National

Table Tennis:
This is a sport that has been producing quality players for the University. In the
last Nuga games the table tennis team won a silver medal with brilliant
performances from Akindeleadeniyi and Obukodataufuomain the team singles,
presently Ufuoma has taken the mantle of team leadership from Adeniyi who has
graduated from the University, hence, Ufuoma remains our brightest chance of
Gold medal in Table Tennis.

Squash : Sam-Ekpolo Miriam is a beautiful love bird that is singing sonorous song
in Squash, this young lady has developed into a very strong player and a force to
reckon with in Squash.

Athletics:
The stars that will be burning the track include OmoakinAbiodunAkinyanran, a
1500meter runner who rose from a mare school athlete to the level of competing in
national competitions. He is another medal hopeful for the university, his
compatriot Felix Momoh ran in the 5000 meters and shown brilliant in the PRENUGA qualifiers.

Our Queen of the track is undauntedly a female princess and a beautiful gazelle,

She represented Lagos State in the National Youth State Athletic Festival, IjebuOde,she won Bronze medal in 800 meter in.
Represented Lagos State in Redeem National Sport Festival, she also won Gold
medal 400 meters and Silver medal in 4x400meters.
We believe that in this year’s NUGA Games, she shall stride to Gold medal for the
University.
Badminton:
Badminton used to be the traditional medal winning sport for FUNAAB, at this
year’sNUGA Games OgunbawoAdetayo Victor is the Badminton number one
player for FUNAAB and the sport captain of the FUNAAB Team to
ObafemiAwolowo University. The gangling player is expected to lead the entire
School team to a Golden performance.

FUNAAB sport team will be participating in two team Games, Cricket and
Hockey.
Hockey:
The Hockey team put up a creditable performance in the last NUGA Games and
won a Bronze medal. Their match against ObafemiAwolowoUniversity brought
out the best out of the team and revealed the Golden potentials of the players.

Cricket:
FUNAAB Cricket team will be representing the University in the maiden
appearance at this year’s NUGA Games at OAU Ile-Ife, Osun State. Despite the
fact that the University will be presenting some rookies in the team, we are excited
to have an experienced player, who has played in the National competition and
club competitions.
TettehRicksonAmandah, a diminutive player and a wicket keeper, he is also an
opening bat man. Tetteh remains the most experienced player in the team and we
hope that he shall bring his experience to enhance the team in this year’s
competition.
Profile:
Tettehrickson Amanda is an assistant secretary, Foundation Cricket Club and also
member of Association Cricket Umpires and Scorers, Nigeria. He had officiated in
the National Sport Festival, NUGA Games 2012 at UNIBEN and West Africa
University Games 2013. Tetteh is lone star in the team and we hope he shall shine
brilliantly and push the team to a Golden performance.





Chess:
The Chess team comprises of six qualified players who featured in UNILAG PRENUGA Games last year and took to cleaners all other Universities.The team
eliminated the almighty University of Ibadan and held University of Lagos to a
fiercebattle. The brain masters are set of talented brain boxes that are brain ready
for this year’s NUGA Games. There are many outstanding players in the team who
have participated in many State and National competitions.
Adebayo Folayan, stands out as the most experienced player of the lots. He was in
the Kwara State team to Kada2009, he is presently with the Oyo state team
preparing for the next sports festival in Calabar, Cross Rivers State.
We believe that the Gold medal shall dangle on the neck of Adebayo in this year’s
NUGA Games as well as his five compatriots.
