Suzanne had been unwell for some months. Suzanne’s teaching career included appointments to Tregear Public School, Lithgow Public School and Evans River K-12. She was a passionate French language educator and chorister – and saw that many Evans River students enjoyed opportunities in our school choir. She was schooled at Byron Bay and Mullumbimby Infants, East Lismore Girls Primary (now Lismore PS) and Lismore High School. She studied at Lismore TAFE, East Sydney Tech, Macquarie University and Northern Rivers College of Advanced Education. Her working life spanned 50 years and apart from teaching included working in commercial television, ABC radio and TV News. For a period she worked for Choice magazine. Her countries of work included the UK and Dubai and she participated in a study tour of France which not only developed her work in French lessons for her students but led to Suzanne leading a group of 50 students who welcomed and sang to the French Olympic team at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Suzanne is survived by her son Douglas and his wife Cassandra. Her funeral will be held at Parkview Funeral Home Goonellabah at 1:00pm on Saturday. Kirrah a High Achiever Congratulations are due to Kirrah Cooke (Year 11) who won the U18 NSW State Longboard titles at Boomerang Beach in mid-June. She then went on to represent NSW and compete in the Australian Surf Festival National Longboard Titles for U18 Girls. Competing on August 9 at Emerald Beach, near Coffs Harbour, Kirrah made it through to the semi-finals only to be edged out of a place in the final in the last minute of the semi-final. To achieve at this level Kirrah often trains three times a day starting as early as 6.00am. Well done on these outstanding achievements Kirrah, a fine effort! Kirrah features in the newsletter’s masthead. A Taste of Uni Life Kurt Forrester (Year 9) has won a place in the University of Newcastle’s Live It! Program which will see him take up residence at the uni in December. The program provides an experience for students considering places in the sciences, mathematics, engineering or health. This will be a great opportunity for Kurt to gain an understanding of life as a university student. Thanks to all who supported Kurt in the application process, including careers adviser Chris Hayward. Further, the research shows that the more intensively parents are involved in their children's learning, the more beneficial are the achievement effects. This holds true for all types of parent involvement in children's learning and for all types and ages of students.” Cotton & Wikelund (1989). Parents of our school are involved in their child’s schooling in all manner of ways. Helping in the classroom, helping with homework, ensuring their child has a good night’s sleep, are fed and in a good frame of mind to come to school, driving and helping with supervision on excursions, helping in the canteen and uniform shop. Parents attend and contribute during P&C meetings. Our School Council has four places for parents to participate in the governance of our school. This is an important role which often positively shapes our school and the opportunities provided to students. The term of office (two years) for the current school councillors comes to a close at the end of this term. The Council meets twice per term. Meetings generally run for one and a half to two hours. Please give consideration to being involved in your child’s education in this way. Nomination forms have been emailed with the newsletter. Answer: 768, 806 km Page 2 Lyn Thomson - CLO 6682 6666 [email protected] Going One thing that helps to make a good speller is reading; the more you read not only the better your knowledge of words becomes but also your spelling. Repeatedly reading a word helps to lock it into your memory. We really encourage parents to listen to their children read, especially in the early years Kinder to Year 4. Just 10 minutes every night can make a huge difference. Going Congratulation to the first and second placegetters in the Upper Primary Spelling Bee Cooper Hinton, Tully Brednow, Jakob Willows and Pearly Peachy. As for the best spelling teacher ?????????? Gone I would like to encourage families to pay their child’s subject contribution fees. I remember how hard it can be to make a budget stretch to cover a family’s expenses and the school is happy to have families pay in instalments over the year; every dollar helps. The fees go towards the cost of materials for their core and elective subjects, especially TAS subjects. At last week’s Evans River Challenge Year 6 students from Evans River, Woodburn, Coraki & Broadwater formed teams to participate in various challenges. This challenge is run as part of the transition program to help prepare them for high school in 2015.
