According to IDC, a full 23% of IT staff time and resources is spent on presolution deployment, change control and supplier meetings1. These activities involve time spent before an IT infrastructure is ever deployed in production to support a customer-facing application or critical database. Converged infrastructure solutions are fully integrated systems composed of compute blades, I/O acceleration, storage systems, network connectivity, and management software. They offload systems integration responsibilities from IT departments. By choosing a converged infrastructure solution, you can save time that would have been required to evaluate bestin-class technologies from disparate vendors. Because there is no need for lengthy periods of integration, sizing and testing to deliver mission-critical and business-critical databases and enterprise applications, you and your business benefit. Your organization gains time-to-market advantages. A converged infrastructure deploys your applications as quickly as possible, streamlines operational efficiency of systems management, and lowers the overall cost of supporting your Oracle environment. Converged infrastructure solutions enable IT to be highly responsive to the business for rapid database and application deployment, relative to the efforts of disparate technologies IDC Survey of Converged Systems, July 2012 1 Hitachi has a successful track record of over 20 years of mission-critical Oracle delivery. Nine of the top 10 U.S. commercial banks, 8 of the top 10 U.S. insurance companies, and the top 3 U.S. telecommunications companies run Oracle on Hitachi solutions. from varying vendors. In addition to this responsiveness, converged solutions are expected to be high performing and highly reliable for data availability; slow database performance and lack of resiliency are unacceptable. However, converged platforms are only as reliable and high performing as their base elements. These elements include server and storage reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS); flash storage, server and storage performance; and a balanced configuration of compute processing with storage. Not all converged platforms that providers offer are the same in terms of performance, reliability, quality and flexibility. For example, converged platforms for general-purpose workloads may not meet the specific requirements of databases. They may be challenged to handle peak workload I/O, low latency IOPS, sequential read storage performance, block sizes and RAID configuration, complex query processing, system robustness and resiliency. Furthermore, they may not have the management tools required to ease and simplify administration for better administration efficiency. The Hitachi converged platform for Oracle, Hitachi UCP for Oracle Databases, has been engineered specifically for Oracle workload requirements, high performance, responsiveness and mission-critical reliability. UCP for Oracle Databases can reduce the TCO of your Oracle infrastructure compared to alternative solutions. Hitachi Unified Compute Platform for Oracle Databases Hitachi UCP for Oracle Databases is engineered, pretested and qualified to provide predictable performance and the highest reliability in demanding, dynamic Oracle environments. Hitachi has had a successful track record for over 20 years of missioncritical Oracle delivery. This solution is a tight integration of Hitachi Compute Blade (CB) servers, enterprise-class Hitachi storage, I/O acceleration and networking elements. It is validated to ensure consistent, predictable Oracle performance. Lower Your Total Cost of Ownership For large-scale Oracle environments, running multiple database instances can quickly become a management nightmare. Furthermore, the licensing costs associated with supporting multiple, discrete databases can drive up the overall cost to maintain your environment. Hitachi UCP for Oracle Databases has industry-leading price-to-performance ratio with up to 50% less TCO within the 1st year of operation than competing solutions. This converged infrastructure solution enables database administrators to consolidate multiple database instances on a single converged system. Hitachi UCP also includes innovative features within the server and storage components that contribute to lower TCO, while improving resilience and efficiency of available storage capacity. For example, Hitachi compute solutions are the only x86 servers available that offer LPARs, which allow you to consolidate multiple databases on fewer physical servers. Since managing large Oracle databases can overwhelm administrators, Hitachi offers a single unified management platform to manage UCP for Oracle Databases environments. With Hitachi Command Suite, administrators can configure, provision and manage their overall Oracle storage infrastructure from a single tool quickly and easily, reducing operating costs and complexity. Other innovative features that Hitachi UCP for Oracle Databases offers include Hitachi Dynamic Tiering and Hitachi Dynamic 3 Provisioning. HDT simplifies storage administration, solves the complexities of implementing data lifecycle management and optimizes the use of tiered storage. It eliminates the need for time-consuming manual data classification and data movement to improve tiered storage efficiencies. HDP is thin provisioning software that allows for a common virtualized storage pool. It simplifies application storage provisioning by allowing administrators to draw from a central virtual pool without immediately adding physical disks. When an application requires more storage capacity, the storage system automatically allocates the necessary physical storage. This just-in-time method of provisioning decouples the provisioning of storage to an application from the physical addition of capacity to the storage system. Hitachi UCP for Oracle Databases also lowers Oracle licensing costs through our unique N+M cold standby functionality. You can configure “M” cold standby blades for each active “N” blade. The standby blades are powered off and not consuming data center resources. In the event of a hardware failure, the system automatically detects the fault and isolates the problem by identifying the faulty module, allowing for immediate failure recovery. This functionality allows Oracle RAC users to configure fewer nodes for availability and save those additional license costs. This approach is for standby operations only and meets Oracle licensing restrictions. Together, these features can enable you to significantly lower TCO associated with running Oracle databases without compromising performance, efficiency or availability. Compute, Storage and Management Elements UCP for Oracle Databases tightly integrates Hitachi Compute Blade 2000 (CB 2000) or Compute Blade 500 (CB 500) and Hitachi enterprise storage. Together, these balanced configurations of compute and storage performance provide predictable reliability and responsiveness for Oracle databases.
