Jobs in Accounting 2014/15
This booklet will help you plan your accounting job
search for final year.
The booklet contains two sections:
1. Organisations participating in NI Milkround and complying with the code of practice dates and associated activity
2. Organisations with vacancies but not participating with the code of practice dates/activities and various sized organisations with vacancies in the Republic of Ireland (ROI)
Some facts:
- There are hundreds of graduate jobs available in accounting across Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland.
- Big and small companies are looking for your skills, experience and qualifications.
- Getting a 2:1 is really important if you want to secure a trainee accountant role.
- If you manage your time effectively in Semester 1 and start your job search and applications early, your chances of securing that dream job are much higher.
- Your Career Development Centre will help and advise you on any career related topic, just ask!
- There will be additional vacancies added to Careers Connect throughout the year (but this booklet has the vast majority).
Careers Connect
Careers Connect is the most important job seeking resource for finalists and
graduates and you should access Careers Connect via the Student Portal My Career tab.
All incoming vacancies from a wide range of employers are regularly posted
on Careers Connect. Log in ASAP so that you can set up email job alerts
to your preferred email address. This means you won’t miss any incoming
vacancies.

Get Advice
Option 1- Call into the Career Development Centre and take note of our drop-in
advice times.
Option 2- Submit an online query through Careers Connect and an advisor will
respond within 2 working days.
Option 3- Book your own appointment through the appointments tab on Careers
Connect (access via the portal, ‘My Career’ section).
What is the Accountancy Milkround?
Read the Code of Practice to check the guidelines that participating employers
adhere to. In basic terms it is when participating recruiters manage their
recruitment at the same time, adhering to a Code of Practice. Participating
employers include Big 4, BDO, Grant Thornton and several smaller firms. Note
that not all employers recruit through the Milkround, some will recruit later in the
academic year.
Hints & Tips
- Start applications as soon as you can.
- Practice online tests through http://pace.ulster.ac.uk
Attend the Careers seminars which will be facilitated by several of the
organisations you apply to now or in the future. These sessions will provide professional and valuable advice and practical sessions which will help you
with applications, interviews, online tests and much more. (detailed information,
dates and locations will be provided within the next couple of weeks)
- Seek advice from your Career Development Centre on applications, online
tests and interviews.
- Attend the Autumn Placement and Careers Fair on Monday 13th October in
Jordanstown or 20th October in Coleraine as most of the recruiters will be
attending.
- Go for it! It’s a busy time but if you secure that job you want you can
concentrate on the rest of final year knowing where you are going after you
graduate.

Graduate Recruitment Code of Practice 2014
The Code of Practice has been developed in relation to the recruitment of students
from the Queens University of Belfast and The University of Ulster. The Code is
designed to apply to all member firms in Northern Ireland recruiting from these
universities. Where necessary, please ensure your respective offices in RoI are
aware of the Code. The Code does not apply where students are being recruited
from universities outside of Northern Ireland. For the avoidance of any doubt, if
your firm is recruiting from the two local universities in the timescale below, the
Code of Practice applies and therefore your firm should adhere to the dates below.
Timescale
Closing date for applications
Wed 22 October 2014
Interviews to commence no sooner than
Mon 3 November 2014
Offers to be issued no earlier than
Fri 21 November 2014
Closing date for offer acceptance/rejection

Northern Ireland Accountancy Recruitment (Milkround)
It is encouraging to note that there are an increasing number of Member firms
(as well as a growing number of other employers) seeking to recruit within the
Northern Ireland Accountancy Recruitment (“Milkround”). As a consequence,
instances of students having to decide between two presentations in one evening
have occurred. I would encourage members firms to make their own arrangements
as a matter of priority for their presentations and interviews with the careers
departments at QUB and University of Ulster. Please note, the two universities
cannot make firm arrangements until such times as this Code has been issued and
firms will be booked on a first come first served basis after the issue of the Code.
All offers of appointment following presentation and interview period should give
students a reasonable period of time to accept an offer and no offer should require
a student to accept earlier than 5 December 2014. Where is has been decided not
to make an offer to a student, this should be communicated to the student at the
same time as offer letters are being issued to other students.
20
On-line and Direct Applications
It is accepted that the on-line method is becoming a more popular form of
application. Firms should ensure that procedures are in place to consider online and hard copy applications in an equitable manner. Closing dates for all
methods should be advertised clearly. Technology should support easy access
and use of the on-line method.
Recruitment other than during the Milkround
It is open to firms to interview and make offers to students who approach them
on an individual basis at any time. Any offers which arise from such interviews
should also give students a reasonable amount of time in which to accept or
decline the offer.
Equal Opportunities
All firms should demonstrate commitment to equality of opportunity in
employment as required by the Equality Commission and the Equality and
Human Right Commission.
Form of Offer
All offers of appointment should be made in writing and should clearly state
the terms of engagement and any conditions attached to the offer. After an
offer has been made, firms should not initiate or encourage any further contact
with the students until the offer has been accepted or declined. This includes
any correspondence regarding the firm itself, acceptance of the offer, and the
proposed terms of employment.
