Interested in Experiential Learning? Studying Abroad? Visiting the Island of Ireland? Want
an On-the-Ground Education in Social Conflict? Check out the Department of Sociology’s
international field study to Belfast, UK, Summer 2015!
From 1969 through 1998, nearly 3,300 people were killed in sectarian violence in Northern
Ireland, known to locals as “The Troubles.” This trip will help students to understand the
factors that led to the prolonged and bloody conflict, and that factors that have resulted in
a sustained peace since the passage of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. Along the way,
we’ll visit historic sites, meet with key figures in the peace movement, and learn lessons
about conflict and resolution that impact our own lives.
