2014 Public Policy Workshop
By Carl Christoph, RD, JD
T
he Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics annual Public Policy Workshop is scheduled for March 30, 2014
through April 1, 2014. The annual event is planned for the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Virginia just outside of
Washington D. C. Approximately six hundred Registered Dietitians and Diet Technicians will be delegates to the
workshop. Holly Guzman, Mary Niester, Sarah Mott and Carl Christoph are already registered to be part of the
Michigan delegation.
Please consider joining “Gang of Four” in representing the Michigan Academy in Washington D. C. The
PPW always presents an interesting and informative agenda. The details of the 2014 agenda are not announced but
the topics are always timely and are not typical for an Academy meeting. In 2013, the theme was “Nutrition from
the ground up”. The presenters featured farm to table nutrition policy.
The highlight of the PPW is always the visits to Capitol Hill. Each delegate is assigned to a team and the
teams visit Representatives and Senators to communicate the Academy’s Public Policy position on selected, timely
topics. It is always exhilarating and exciting to walk the halls of congress and meet with elected officials who make
the decisions which shape public policy.
If you are interested in attending the 2014 Public Policy Workshop, the Academy’s website
www.eatright.org has a section on how to line up a spot at the workshop, including selling the idea to your boss.
The deadline for early discount is March 7th and registration closes March 21st, 2014.
Workshop participants will learn the central theme; “If dietetics is
your profession, public policy should be your passion.”
Affiliate Challenge Program
By Karen Host, MS, RD
W
ant to help boost the Michigan Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics membership? The Academy of Nutrition
and Dietetics is holding an Affiliate Challenge Program from February 1, 2014 – April 30, 2014. This
program will allow our membership recruitment activities to better align with the Academy’s national spring
recruitment campaigns, while giving your non-members some additional incentive to join so they can attend your
spring affiliate meeting.
The Academy affiliates are divided into four challenge groups based on membership size. The affiliate from each
group that recruits the most new Academy members will be eligible to receive additional awards (monetary) and
recognition. New members from your affiliate who join the Academy between February 1 and April 30, 2014 must
use the promo code AFC15 either online or when they call the Academy Member Service Center. Non-members
joining the Academy from February 1 – April 30, 2014 will receive a special, promotional dues rate. Their
Academy membership will be valid through May 31, 2015.
Those who use the promo code AFC15 will also have the $25 application fee waived. Active, Retired, International
and Associate category members will be counted for the Affiliate Challenge. Student category members are not
included. So, get out there and recruit! For any further questions, please call or email Lilliane Smothers, Sr.
Manager of Member and Student Relations at [email protected] or (312) 899-1775.

The Michigan Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is a participant serving on
the steering committee for this
important initiative partnering with many other state agencies and retail
groups.
The plan focuses on four key
healthy behaviors that have
been demonstrated by
evidence based practice to
have an impact on health: a
healthy diet, regular
exercise, an annual
physical, and avoiding all
tobacco use and exposure.
