FROM THE EDITORS DESK
Dear friends,
From Chennai to Bhopal to Trivandrum next year we shall be meeting each other
at different venues which will give us ample time to interact and boost our
friendship. From various emails and notices on the internet I gather that there is far
more opportunity for our young physiatrists to take up jobs in the speciality than
earlier. I hope that these vacancies get filled up and that these opportunities don't
go abegging. I request our members to send in their achievements and articles to
me for future publication.
Dr.S.SUNDER
EDITOR IAPMR BULLETIN
PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
It is indeed a great pleasure that IAPMR Bulletin is evolving as an excellent vehicle
for creative writing for some of our members. This is a surprise for me that we have
good wordsmiths amongst us. I request more members to put their thoughts,
feelings and experiences in works of prose through our own 'Bulletin'. I am going to
do this myself with my experience in ISPRM Congress at Cancun, Mexico.
DR.KUNJABASI WANGJAM
PRESIDENT IAPMR
FROM OUR SECRETARY'S DESK
Dear Colleagues,
It is indeed a great pleasure to communicate to you all through one another edition
of IAPMR Bulletin edited by our Dynamic Physiatrist Dr.S.Sunder. In this moment I
share the joy that Madras Medical College has been sanctioned with 2 seats of MD
PMR from this academic year. If I say that the PMR has been revived in Tamilnadu
and hereafter there is no looking back for the specialty; it is no more an
exaggeration. The saying - "Hard work never fails" has been proved. I hope more
institutes will come up with such PG programs. I also appreciate Dr.Ganesh Joshi of
Bhopal for taking up our Midterm CME while Dr.Abdul Gafoor, Prof and HOD of
PMR Dept, Trivandrum Medical College under the Chairmanship of Dr.Nandakumaran Nair has come
forward to take the National Annual IAPMR Conference at Trivandrum - IAPMRCON 2015. I wish both the
conferences grand success. Long live IAPMR.

REPORT ABOUT IAPMRCON 2014 CHENNAI
The 42nd Annual Conference and CME of the
Indian Association of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation (IAPMR), IAPMRCON 2014 was
hosted by the Tamil Nadu Chapter of IAPMR at the
World class Industrial Consultation & Sponsored
Research Auditorium in the sprawling IIT Chennai
Campus from 24 to 26 January, 2014. Over 200
delegates from all over the country and abroad,
including USA, UK, Austria and Middle East,
attended the Conference.
The Conference was preceded by two one-day workshops on 23rd January. Both the workshops, the
Cadaveric Interventional Physiatry (conducted by Dr Prem Anand) and Cerebral Palsy Rehabilitation
(conducted by Dr Feroz Khan) were very well attended and lauded by all the participants. Inspired by the
quality of workshops many members proposed to start short certificate courses under IAPMR Accreditation.
The Organizing Committee, headed by Dr Feroz Khan with Dr T Jayakumar as Secretary and Dr P
Thirunavukkarasu as Treasurer, provided warm and affectionate hospitality to the delegates. The Hon'ble
Health Minister, Dr Vijay, Govt. of Tamil Nadu was the Chief Guest at the Inaugural Function that witnessed
the august presence of the State Director of Medical Education. The Minister, himself being a Medical
Doctor appreciated the importance of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as an essential medical
speciality for providing holistic health care to the patients. He also announced the commencement of MD
Programme at GIRM.
The Scientific Committee, headed by Dr Feroz Khan himself, chalked a well thought out scientific feast with
an awesome mix of free papers from residents and CME/Invited talks from the seniors. There were only 2
invited lectures from the other specialities. Dr Khan was assisted efficiently by Dr.Henry Prakash, Dr.Geeta
Kalpana and Dr.Uma Pandiyan in the Scientific Committee.
The biggest and most inspiring attraction of the Conference was the prestigious West Bengal Oration,
delivered by renowned Physiatrist and doyen of PMR in India, Prof. Suranjan Bhattacharjee, (former Head,
Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Ex-Director, CMC, Vellore). The oration opened up
the minds of not only of residents but their teachers too. Dr Bhattacharjee has been an epitome of
greatness, philosophy and beauty of Rehabilitation simplified. Whenever he graces any of the Physiatrists'
gatherings, everyone comes out little more grown-up and mature, both professionally and as a humanbeing.
The Banquet night, unleashed another hidden aspect of members. Dr Sunder's singing (including in
Bengali) and IAPMR President & First Lady's dancing abilities were especially enjoyed and appreciated by
one and all. Other physiatrists who sang in the Cultural Programme were Dr.Thyagarajan, Dr. Unnikrishnan
and Dr.Antony.
As with all good things, the Conference concluded with Valedictory Function coinciding with the Republic
Day on 26 Jan with announcement of awards acknowledging and recognizing talent and research
contribution from the members.
