Vol 10/14 Friday 11 April 2014 Thanks Miriam… Last Sunday, a bunch of Waverley Park kids – including those who star in the Southern Steel sponsored “Clicked Yet?” road safety campaign - were courtside guests as the Steel hosted the Mystics. Our kids got to provide the banners and artwork for the Steel’s dressing room; the guard of honour for both teams as they came onto the court; watch the game from premium complimentary seats; AND to see themselves featuring in the ad when it played for the first time on the big screens at the new stadium. This term, we’ve had the services of Miriam Erikson sharing room 7 with Janelle. Unfortunately, circumstances unforeseen and beyond Miriam’s control, mean that she is unable to continue in the role next term. We have enjoyed having her as part of our team – and we look forward to her doing the odd spot of relieving for us as and when circumstances allow. The positive feedback we’ve received is possibly outstripped only from the size of the buzz the kids themselves got from their big “Steel week”. Don’t worry: school accounts are being posted this week. Thanks Southern Steel for the opportunities and experiences; good luck for the rest of the campaign. And thanks to our Waverley Park kids – once again - a fantastic ad for our school: we’re proud of you all. We are working on a Plan B as we speak – we’ll let you know what’s happening as soon as arrangements are formalised. Unsure how much you owe us? Bank details... The school’s bank account number: 12 3154 0103559 00 under your child’s name and a reference tag (eg: “Donation”). Easter raffle closes on Monday… …and we will not be able to draw it until all cards have been returned. We need them all back - sold and unsold - to meet our auditing requirements. Please make sure we get them back on Monday – even if you have to staple it to your Waverley Park scholar – most of whom claim that they don’t forget to bring stuff. It’s the fault of forgetful parents apparently. Oddly enough: we did discover that parental memory improved drastically when handing in a form meant the relevant kid got a chocolate fish…….. Self-explanatory really… Daniel, Cormac, Abby and Mahayla (both obscured); with Road Safety Southland’s (and ex Waverley Park BOT Chair) Maureen Deuchrass; watching the ad from below the big screen. We have a serious head-lice infestation at the moment – particularly in rooms 6 & 11. Please be part of the solution to this problem and treat your kids thoroughly during the upcoming student break. To help, we have acquired from a local supplier to pass on to you at a heavily reduced price; so…. “Picksan” headlice treatment available from the school office at $5.00 (RRP $20). Misconceptions about lice: “You get lice if you are unhygienic and have long hair that you do not look after.” Wrong: everyone who comes into contact with someone that has lice; can get lice. "I just comb lice and lice eggs out". Wrong: Lice (grip) and lice eggs (stick) – they even resist lice combs and hair dryers. “I just wash away lice with shampoo. People get lice when they do not wash their hair with shampoo". Wrong: Normal shampoo does not remove lice (think about the tight grip). "If someone has lice, it is only important that those with lice are treated." Wrong: All "contact people" should be deloused, as they can also be infected without realising it. Seriously, there is much more afoot than is being openly acknowledged by the politicians involved - not all of whom are necessarily elected. Is this really what you want for your kids? http://saveourschoolsnz.wordpress.com/2014/04/06/jointhe-dots-what-government-is-doing-to-nz-education/ The Board of Trustees has retained unchanged for yet another year, the school annual donation request: $60.00 for the first child in a family $90.00 if you have two or more Waverley kids. Coming up … "If I cut off the white nits then the lice will be gone." Wrong: The white nits are already empty and no longer have a function. The backroom threats to education ANNUAL SCHOOL DONATION Please note: school donations are a legitimate claim against your tax return – keep your receipts. Courtesy of a local supplier… Please inform yourself: kids and communities do not deserve what is being foisted upon them. Get out the vote… One million Kiwis didn't vote last election. The Get Out The Vote campaign - an independent, non-partisan project of the New Zealand union movement - aims to change that.
