MEASUREMENT/LOGGING WHILE DRILLING Pressure-While-Drilling (PWD) Sensor Optimizing drilling efficiency Sperry Drilling services’ pressure-while-drilling (PWD) sensor boosts drilling efficiency by providing crucial, real-time downhole pressure information that allows you to make faster and better drilling decisions. Communication port The PWD service, part of the ADT® optimization service tool kit, provides accurate annular pressure, internal pressure, and temperature measurements using any of our telemetry systems: positive mud pulse, negative mud pulse, and electromagnetic. Pressure data can be transmitted in real time and recorded in downhole memory. In the pumps-off mode, the minimum, maximum, and average pressures observed during the noncirculating period are transmitted via mud pulse telemetry when circulation recommences. These measurements provide the knowledge to avoid lost circulation and detect flow/kicks before they happen. The PWD sensor also reduces the risk of problems caused by unexpected fracture or collapse. Electronics section Transducer section B Annular pressure port B Section B - B Internal guage Port Annular guage fluid parameters and operating procedures can be modified to improve hole-cleaning efficiency. On extended-reach wells, real-time information helps to maintain wellbore pressures between safe operating limits and to monitor hole cleaning. The PWD sensor also provides early detection of well flows and kicks. In deepwater riserless drilling, an increase in annular pressure indicates the likelihood of a shallow water flow. A drop in pressure, on the other hand, can indicate gas, oil, and water kicks. Because the sensor is making its measurement downhole, the PWD sensor makes it possible to detect such pressure drops earlier than more traditional surface measurements. Annular pressure increases often reflect ineffective cuttings removal and poor hole cleaning, both of which can lead to lost circulation. The PWD sensor detects the increase, and drilling The PWD sensor has high-accuracy quartz gauges and is able to record data because of its battery-powered operation. It is also extremely useful in specialized drilling environments, such as high-pressure/high-temperature, extended-reach, and deepwater wells. HAL9062 When combined with the InSite® rig management system, surface and downhole measurements can be compared for more accurate and extensive analysis. Sperry Drilling’s PWD sensor provides annular pressure, internal pressure, and temperature measurements in real time. The sensor reduces the risk of unexpected fracture or collapse For a more complete downhole picture, Sperry Drilling’s Replay™ service can provide operators with a “snapshot” of high-density data on command. The Replay service enhances Sperry’s PWD sensor using the Geo-Span® downlink system, where commands can be sent to the downhole tools to initiate high-density data recording and transmission. Once the Geo-Span downlink service sends the command from the surface, high-density annular pressure data is stored during LOT (leak-off test) or pumps-off operations, and then transmitted to surface as circulation is resumed.
