We have not neglected in the Register a thing. Then unto their Lord they will be gathered." (Qur'an, 6:38) http://quran.com/6/38 Allah Almighty uses the word 'community' (ummah) to describe the similarity between people and animals. We have our social groups, animals have theirs. There is a beauty and majesty in the innate construct of swimmings shoals of fish or flocks of birds dancing in the skies. Muslims reflect, where do penguins learn parenting skills? How do baby turtles know to head to water? For Muslims, this answer is divinely inspired as Allah calls upon them to treating animals with dignity. Wildlife maintains ecological balance & the organisms have their unique positions in food chains, food webs which keep ecological balance. It contributes to the maintenance of material cycles such as carbon and nitrogen cycles. All the improvement and progress in agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries and in all the breeding programs is due to utilization of genes obtained from wildlife and preserved as gene bank. Wildlife provides a number of useful products like food, medicine, honey, wax, resin, etc. The colorful birds, insects, beautiful flowers, and trees make environment beautiful. In spite of uncountable services provided by wildlife to mankind, surprisingly it is the man itself who is responsible for destroying wildlife and its natural habitats. Trees have been felled causing deforestation leading to pollution of atmospheric gases and soil erosion. Hunting for fun or collecting skin, tusks, horns for sale has resulted in extinction of many species like the tigers, elephants, cheetah& some variety of birds. Excessive whaling is leading to the extinction of the largest creatures on the earth. Industrial wastes dumped in rivers and other water bodies have killed many varieties of fishes, oil spills in the oceans have destroyed marine flora and fauna. Poisonous gases from industries and vehicles have adversely affected wildlife. Global warming has led to the melting of polar ice drowning the polar bears & killing the penguins & destroying the coral reefs. The world's wildlife has declined by nearly a third over the past 40 years. Almost 90 percent of all large fishes have disappeared from the world's oceans in the past half century. Lion populations have fallen by almost 90% in the past 20 years, leaving the animal close to extinction. There are now only 23,000 left, compared to an estimated 200,000 two decades ago. Almost a quarter of the world's mammals face extinction within 30 years. Wildlife Conservation Society estimates that during 2011, 30,000 African elephants have been killed for their ivory, over 25 million sharks have been caught for their fins, and nearly 600 rhinos were shot down in South Africa alone for their horns. Less than 3,200 tigers now exist in the wild, whereas the population was greater than 100,000 only a century ago. Coastal habitats such as mangroves, sea grass beds, salt marshes and shellfish reefs continue to decline in extent, threatening highly valuable ecosystem services. The population of wild vertebrate species fell by an average of nearly one- third (31%) globally between 1970 and 2006. Species of birds and mammals used for food and medicine are on average facing a greater extinction risk than those not used for such purposes. Preliminary assessments suggest that 23% of plant species are threatened. Climate change is already having an impact on biodiversity, and is projected to become a progressively more significant threat in the coming decades. Pollution from many sources is a continuing and growing threat to biodiversity in terrestrial, inland water and coastal ecosystems. Invasive alien species continue to be a major threat to all types of ecosystems and species. Overexploitation and destructive harvesting practices are at the heart of the threats being imposed on the world's biodiversity and ecosystems, and there has not been significant reduction in this pressure. In this state of affairs, it is duty of all of us to play our role for the conservation of our wildlife and our natural resources. The Wildlife Conservation Day is celebrated each year worldwide on March 3 to put together our joint efforts for the common cause of protection of wildlife. It is the duty of citizens, civil society, media, private organizations, government departments, students and researchers to protect wildlife for protection of human race as our life is dependent on our biodiversity. provide our youth a chance to show their talent to the world.
