Did you know…..?
Strawberry Valley House
Strawberry Valley House; From
Websters the route of the Pony
Express followed approximately along
Highway
50
eastward
by
the
Champlain House (Fred’s Place) to
Strawberry Valley.
Here was the
remount station for the Overland Pony
and horse-change station for the
Overland stage. In addition, sleighs
and bobsleds were kept here for use
over the summit in the winter storms.
Strawberry Valley House was located
below the present Strawberry Lodge,
about half way down the meadow and
between the present garage and
stable. The site was on the east side
of the pioneer road but on the west
side of the present highway. The first
Strawberry Valley House was started
in 1856 by Swift and Watson, who
later were stage drivers for the Pioneer
Stage Company. A Mr. Berry is said
to have patented the land in 1858,
and later sold the property to Swift
and Watson. It is reported that wild
strawberries grew in the meadow,
which likely gave the valley its name.
It was a popular stopping place for
stage and the big teams for the
Comstock. This was also a popular
resort for trips and dances. This was
where the Pony Riders really entered
the
snow
country.
Division
superintendent Bolivar Roberts was
on hand here on April 4, 1860, with a
string of mules to help the first Pony
Rider through the snow.
