ANNUAL REPORT Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen! Lt Gen GS Bisht, VSM, Commandant, OTA Gaya our Chief Guest, distinguished guests, esteemed parents, members of press, members of staff and my dear cadets. It is my proud privilege, honour and pleasant duty to extend a very cordial and warm welcome to each one of you on behalf of self and the entire Mauryan fraternity on the auspicious occasion of the 11th Annual Day Celebrations of this premier institution of Bihar. We are immensely indebted and deeply thankful to Lt Gen GS Bisht, VSM, Commandant, OTA Gaya for having accepted our invitation to be the Chief Guest of the day. It speaks volumes of his love and affection for this institution, that despite his numerous important engagements, he has spared his valuable time to grace the occasion. Sir, your benign presence will certainly be a source of inspiration and motivation to the cadets and staff of our School. Our Chief Guest Lt Gen GS Bisht, VSM was commissioned into Corps of Signals as an Engineering Graduate. He is of 1975 batch and an alumnus of the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. The General Officer has done all important career courses. He is triple post graduate with Master of Science, Master of Management Studies and Master of Philosophy (Defence and Strategic Studies). The General Officer has held various staff, instructional and command appointments during his service. He had the singular honour of being part of fielding teams of two contemporary communication systems of their time. The General officer was also fortunate to be the part of the team responsible for chronicling the way for switching over to Server/ Client over Network model of computing in the Indian Army from Dumb Terminals based Mainframe Computing system, while he was the Senior System Engineer at Army HQ Computer Centre. He also represented India in International Telecommunication Union (ITU) meeting at Fortaleza, Brazil in 1999 on Global Mobile Personal Communication Services (GMPCS). This was an international forum of deciding standards and protocols for today’s mobile telephony. He Commanded an Armoured Divisional Signal Regiment as part of a Strike Corps. The General Officer has also been the Chief Signal Officer of operationally active Corps involved in Counter Insurgency and Counter Terrorist operations in the valley sector of J&K. He has been Deputy Director General, Telecommunication at Army HQ, Deputy Commandant and Chief Instructor at Military College of Telecommunication Engineering Mhow and Chief Signal Officer of Western Command. The General Officer took over as Commandant of OTA Gaya with effect from 01 Oct 2012.The General Officer was elected as Colonel Commandant of Corps of Signals in 2011. The General officer was conferred Vishist Seva Medal on 26 Jan 2013 besides having earned Commendations from the COAS and the Army Commander during his 39 years of illustrious service. The General Officer is married to Mrs Radha Bisht and the couple has one son and a daughter. Sainik School Nalanda, a joint venture of Govt of Bihar and Min of Def, Govt of India, is one of the twenty four Sainik Schools in the country. The School was inaugurated on 12 Oct 2003 with an enrolled strength of 67 cadets in class VI and presently has 487 cadets on its rolls from classes VI to XII. It has a well crafted training programme with a primary aim of preparing boys academically, physically and mentally for entry into the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy. The School has well qualified and experienced faculty to impart quality training. The teacher student ratio is 1:20. The cadets are housed in four senior, four junior and one holding house. I, take this opportunity to present the School Annual Report highlighting the important aspects and achievements. Academics CLASS X RESULTS 2013 & MERIT CERTIFICATE Last year in CBSE class X, the School attained cent per cent pass percentage and 82 out of 105 cadets secured A1 grade out of which 28 cadets secured A1 grades in all the subjects. Owing to this feat, the School has received the prestigious ‘Merit Certificate’ from the Sainik Schools Society, Ministry of Defence for its exemplary performance in All India Secondary School Examination (Class X) for the Academic Session 201213. This is the fourth time the school has received this prestigious certificate and it is a matter of great pride to mention that so far only six batches of class X have passed out from this school. CBSE CLASS XII The School has achieved overall III position in Class XII results in terms of quality among all the Sainik Schools in the country by leaving all its previous bench marks far behind. 55 out 56 cadets passed the examination with a pass% of 98.21. Cdt Shyam Kr Sudhakar, Roll No 245 (95.60%), Cdt Parimal Raj, Roll No 280(93.60%) and Cdt Praveen Kumar, Roll No 235 (91%) secured more than 90% marks and set a new benchmark for the coming batches. Cdt Shyam Kr Sudhakar, Roll No 245 topped in the Nalanda District. In English 55 out 56 cadets passed with distinction out of which 39 cadets secured more than 90% and 17 cadets secured 95% marks. Raksha Mantri Trophy’ from Sainik Schools Society The School has received the coveted ‘Raksha Mantri Trophy’ for sending maximum percentage of its class XII cadets (fourth batch) to 130 NDA and 92 INA Courses commenced in July 2013. A total number of 12 cadets joined NDA & INA during July 2013. In addition to the above, 03 ex-cadets of the School of the first batch joined 136 Course at Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun through CDSE in Jan 2014 while 01 excadet of the third batch joined 131 Course of NDA in Jan 2014. 16 out of 55 cadets of fifth batch qualified UPSC NDA Written Exam in Aug 2013 and 03 cadets of fifth batch and 01 cadet of fourth batch have also been recommended by SSBs and are likely to join the academy in July 2014 that will make our NDA tally 53 from the last five batches the school produced so far. 86 cadets of present class XII (sixth batch) will be appearing in the NDA & INA (II) Exam in Sep 2014. Senior Defence Officers and eminent motivational speakers such as (a) Maj Gen SP Sinha, VSM (Retd) (b) Gp Capt (Retd) LK Pandey. (c) Gp Capt Jaibir Singh Lohokna F(P), Station Commander, Air Force Station, Bihta (d) Brig RK Jha, Brig Adm, OTA, Gaya (e) Cmde(Retd) Chandrashekhar Azad, Ex-President 12 SSB (Navy) Bangalore & Col (Retd) Mukhteshwar Prasad (f) Cmde VS Babelay, Principal Director, Met & Oceanography, Naval HQs & Former Inspecting Officer, Sainik Schools Society, Min of Def were invited to conduct SSB orientation programmes, workshops and seminars to enhance communication skills, personality development traits, etiquette and Officer Like Qualities, which have helped to better the NDA intake. Madhya Bharat Trophy The School has been adjudged as the ‘Best Sainik School’ in the Madhya Bharat Area for the Academic Session 2011-12 on the overall performance in all domains and received ‘GOC, MB Area Best Sainik School Rolling Trophy’. Madhya Bharat Area comprises Sainik Schools at Nalanda, Gopalganj, Tilaiya, Bhubaneswar and Ambikapur. This is the third time the school has received this trophy. Facilities Despite space constraints and functioning from temporary accommodation, the School is equipped with all the modern equipments, We have smart classrooms, well equipped laboratories, Computer and IT Lab with internet facility, rich library, English Language lab, Audio Visual Aids like LCD Projectors, Over Head Projectors and DVD Players, Multi-gymnasium, Water Coolers fitted with Water Purifiers, Gen Sets, adequate vehicles, Solar lights & water heaters, Mechanised Washing Unit, modern furniture etc. To improve the living standards, four additional pre-fabricated dormitories for cadets have been constructed recently. Laptops have been provided to the permanent teachers for equipping them with modern trends in education to impart technology based education for lasting effect on the cadets learning. Scholastic & Co-Scholastic Activities Co and extra-curricular activities are essential for overall personality development. Therefore, we give equal importance to these activities besides academics. Activities like Debates, Declamation, Essay Writing, Poem Recitation, Quiz, Extempore, Painting etc., are integral part of our School curriculum. Regular Inter House Competitions are organised to develop literary and leadership qualities. We bring out Annual Magazine every year and Newsletter bi-annually to provide a platform to our cadets and staff to explore their literary skills. Journal, Book Review and Diary Writings are regular features to develop writing and creative skills. Annual School Exhibition on various subjects are also organised to promote a scientific outlook and aesthetic flair among the cadets. To improve the communication skills of the cadets, we bring each class to the stage everyday so that they can overcome stage fright as well as develop a sense of confidence to face the audience. Games and Sports Games and Sports are bedrocks of a disciplined life. A healthy mind in a healthy body is the motto of the School. We do not have adequate play fields to provide our cadets with all sports amenities. But, efforts have been made to provide them makeshift playgrounds within the available space. Sports and games are compulsory for our cadets in the evenings which play an important role in promoting the team spirit, discipline, co-ordination, co-operation and a welcome break from studies. Round the year various Inter House Championships are conducted as per the School Calendar where boys compete with each other for championships. The school has also been participating and excelling in various games and sports organised by CBSE and other sports organisation at district as well as state level. WINNERS OF CENTRAL ZONE SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIP 2013 The school created history and bagged overall First Position in the Central Zone Sports Championship held at Sainik School Tilaiya from 15 Jul to 20 Jul 2013. Our School Hockey, Football and Volleyball teams grabbed First positions and we also did exceedingly well in co-curricular activities. Cdts Surender Suman Jha, Roll No 391, Mohit Kumar, Roll No 499 and Satish Kumar, Roll No 602 were awarded ‘Best Player Awards’ in Volleyball, Football and Hockey respectively. Cdts Ashutosh Kunwar, Roll No 376 and Vishal Kumar, Roll No 465 were adjudged as the Best Scorer in Football and Best MC in cultural programme respectively. CHAMPIONS OF ALL INDIA SAINIK SCHOOLS INTER ZONE HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP 2013 The Hockey wizards of our School for the first time won All India Sainik Schools Inter Zone National Level Hockey Championship held at Sainik School Purulia (WB) from 25 Aug to 29 Aug 2013. Our team outplayed the winners of other zones and emerged as champions. Cdt Keshav Kumar, Roll No 716 was adjudged as the Best Goalkeeper of the Championship. The Hockey team being the Champions of Inter Zone Championship represented Sainik Schools in SteelBird International 42nd Nehru Hockey Tournament Jr held at New Delhi from 29 Oct to 14 Nov 2013 and brought laurels to the school. PERFORMANCE AT ALL INDIA SAINIK SCHOOLS INTER ZONE FOOTBALL AND VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP 2013 Our school Football and Volleyball teams being the winners of central zone championship participated in All India Sainik Schools Inter Zone Football and Volleyball championships held at Sainik School Kunjpura and Ghorakhal from 24 Aug to 27 Aug 2013 and 03 Oct to 05 Oct 2013 respectively. Our teams played quite brilliantly and bagged Runners Up Trophies in the above said National Level Championships. Success in the CBSE Cluster Level Athletics Meet 2013-14. Roll No 409, Cadet Neel Kamal of Class XI bagged Silver Medal in High Jump in under 19 category and the School Relay Team bagged Bronze Medal in 4 x 100 mtr Relay Race in the CBSE Cluster Level Athletics Meet held at DAV Public School, Cantt Area, Gaya in Nov 2013. Success at National Level Karate Championship 2013. 16 cadets participated in the 4th National Open & Inter School Karate Do Championship 2013 organised by National Karate Academy of India at Cambridge School, Silao, Nalanda (Bihar) from 27 Sep 2013 to 29 Sep 2013 and won 07 Gold, 04 Silver and 05 Bronze medals SUCCESS AT NATIONAL TALENT SEARCH EXAM (NTSE) 32 out of 92 cadets of class X qualified the first phase of NTSE and appeared in the second phase in May 2013. Finally 05 cadets have qualified and are eligible to get the prestigious NTSE scholarship. Presently, there are 195 cadets from classes IX to XII getting the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship @ Rs 6,000/- per cadet per year. These cadets are eligible to get scholarship from NCERT or SCERT throughout their education from class IX and up to Ph D level. Performance in Olympiads We also provide an array of opportunities to appear in competitive exams which give an exposure to the cadets to expand their competencies and equip themselves to sustain in this competitive world. In 13th National Cyber Olympiad, 01 cadet of class X received a Gold Medal a merit certificate, a gift worth Rs 1000 and Rs 5000/- as cash incentive, 01 more cadet of class X received a Bronze Medal, a merit certificate, a gift worth Rs 1000 and Rs 1000/- as cash incentive. In 7th International Mathematics Olympiad 02 cadets received Silver Medals, merit certificates, gifts worth Rs 1000/- and cash incentive of Rs 2500/-. Apart from this, 47 cadets have received merit certificates and cash incentive of Rs 1000/- each in different Olympiads. National Financial Literacy Assessment Test 2014 213 cadets from classes VIII to X appeared in the National Financial Literacy Assessment Test 2014 organised by the National Institute of Securities Markets in Jan 2014. 175 cadets received Merit Certificates and 24 cadets received Participation Certificates. Bharat Ko Jaano Quiz Competition 2013 04 cadets of the School participated in the Bharat Ko Jaano Quiz Competition 2013 at Biharsharif in Nov 2013. Cadets secured FIRST position in junior category and SECOND position in the senior category. Morning Procession (Prabhat Pheri) on World Tourism Day Our cadets along with School Band team participated in Prabhat Pheri organized by Sub Divisional Administration, Rajgir & Bihar Tourist Information Centre on World Tourism Day on 27 Sep 2013. OUR CULTURAL TEAM On the occasions of Independence Day, Republic Day ,Rajgir Mahotsava and other important events the School cultural team presented variety of cultural programmes comprising Skit, Mime, Patriotic Dance, Group song at the district headquarters and brought laurels to the school. Success in Yuva Mahotsava 2013. The School Skit Team has won the District Level Skit Competition organised on the occasion of Yuva Mahotsava 2013. However, due to exams, the skit team could not participate in the State Level Yuva Mahotsava 2013. Hobby Clubs The School has various Hobby Clubs to tap the inherent talent and creativity of the cadets. The clubs in the school include Ecology, Photography, Public Speaking, Quiz, and Dramatics. Cadets are also getting training in Yoga, Dance, Boxing, Health, Music and Karate. We have also introduced swimming classes. NCC NCC is compulsory. The School has a Senior Wing for classes XI and XII. Cadets of VI to X are enrolled in Junior Division. Cadets are sent for attending various camps to instill the traits of a true soldier of the nation. For the formation of full-fledged Junior Division Coy, 01 Subedar and 02 Havildars have been posted in the school. To improve the standard of drill and instill the passion to join armed forces, Inter House Drill Competition was organised for the first time on the occasion of Army Day which has fired the josh in the cadets to join the Armed Forces. The School NCC contingent participated in the Independence Day Parade organized by Nalanda District Administration at Biharsharif. 25 cadets of the School NCC team also participated in the Republic Day Parade organised by the Nalanda District Administration at Sogara High School Ground, Biharsharif 4. School contingent was awarded a Shield and Certificates by the Superintendent of Police, Nalanda 52 Cadets of class XII appeared in NCC ‘C’ Certificate Exam in Feb 2014. Results are still awaited. Excursions and Adventure Recreational excursions and motivational tours to Defence Establishments and places of national historical importance are organised every year to provide exposure to the cadets to develop power of observation, exploration, judgment and drawing inferences, problem solving ability, self- confidence, initiative , leadership and organising abilities. 02 cadets of Class XI attended All India Sainik Schools Mountaineering Expedition in May 2013 and climbed the Ladakhi Peak (5432 mts) in Manali region (Himachal Pradesh). Cadets of class XI were sent to witness Passing Out Parade (POP) at OTA, Gaya in Jun & Dec 2013. 72 cadets of class VIII along with 02 escorts went on Educational-cumMotivational Tour to New Delhi and Agra in Sep 2013. Apart from visiting defence establishments, they also visited the Rashtrapati Bhawan at New Delhi, the Taj Mahal at Agra and other places of historical importance. 82 cadets of class VII along with their class teachers went on an education tour to Patna, the capital of Bihar in Oct 2013 and visited Sri Krishna Science Centre, Museum and Zoo. 61 cadets of class IX and two escorts went on an educational tour to Bangalore in Nov 2013. They were fortunate to visit ASTE, ISRO, Satellite Centre and meet His Excellency Shri Hansraj Bhardwaj, Hon’ble Governor, Karnataka. 78 cadets of class X along with 02 escorts went on an educational tour to Pune and Mumbai in Nov 2013 and visited NDA, their ultimate destination at Pune, Air Force Stn, Lohegaon and Western Naval Command at Mumbai. They also visited different places of interest in Mumbai and Pune. 65 cadets of class VI along with 02 escorts went on an educational tour to Nalanda Ruins, Museum, Xuan Xang Memorial Hall and Pawapuri in Dec 2013. In-service and Professional Enhancement Training for Teachers Teachers are sent for professional enhancement programmes regularly to keep them updated with the latest trends in the field of education for improving the standard of training being imparted to the cadets. The details of in-service training/workshops attended by staff are as under:(a) The Principal attended XLIII All India Sainik Schools Principals Conference held at Sainik School Chittorgarh (Rajasthan) in Sep 2013. (b) Hav/APTC Pratap Jaganath More, our PTI attended SLSC Course Ser No-03 at AIPT and APTC, Pune in May 2013. (c) Mr Om Nandan Kr Singh, Master, Mathematics, Mr Nitu Kumar Singh, TGT Maths and Mr Prabhat Kumar Jha, TGT English attended Professional Enhancement Workshop for Sainik Schools Teachers at Faculty Development and Research Centre (FDRC), New Delhi in May & June 2013. (d) Mr Shames Reza, our Librarian attended a 5 day training programme on ‘ICT APPLICATION FOR STRENGTHENING LIBRARY SYSTEM & eGRANTHALAYA’ organized at Patna in Jun 2013. (e) Dr Pramod Kumar, Master (PGT), Biology has been detailed to attend the Annual CBSE Counseling and Guidance Workshop held at New Delhi in Jan 2014. (f) Mr Rajiv Kumar Pathak, Master (PGT), Chemistry attended a seminar at Sainik School Tilaiya (Jharkhand) in Feb 2014. (g) Mrs Mamta Rani, Master (PGT) and Mr Vikash Kumar Dubey, Asst Master (TGT), Dept of Computer Science attended a workshop on ICT at Patna organized by Oracle Academy in collaboration with CBSE at Patna in Feb 2014. Apart from these, Faculty Development Programmes are also conducted every week by the Principal, Head Master and Academic Staff to exchange their ideas and experience to enhance each other’s ability and information for the healthy growth of the institution. Construction of Permanent Buildings Construction of the First Phase of the School Building has been going at a greater pace at Nanand Village and the second phase construction will start as soon as the first phase gets over. It is expected that the school will shift to its permanent location by the year 2016. Visit of VIPs We are honoured by the visit of many dignitaries and officials during the period under review. (c) Our Chief Guest happened to be with us along with the gentlemen cadets of Officers Training Academy, Gaya on 09 March that has given a golden opportunity for our senior cadets to have an interaction with them and got motivated to join Armed Forces. Our cadets have also been apprised to join the Armed Forces through Technical Entry scheme. At Last Our emphasis to provide a conducive environment, which helps the cadets to realize their full potential in the academic and extra-curricular field and develop a sense of discipline, good moral character, values of tolerance, fair play, compassion, integrity, and fortitude to evolve all round personality of our cadets. We are committed to produce good and useful citizen to lead the country. I wish to place on record the hard work, dedication, loyalty and active participation of the entire staff and cadets of Sainik School Nalanda.
