With batteries installed place the probe electrodes in contact with the cap brass terminals. The end electrode must be adjacent to the red dot. When the cap switch is pressed the red dot will light up if the operation is normal. An oscilloscope test (100 ohm load) should show the waveform illustrated on the circuit diagram. Insert batteries with the positive (+) end forward. Negative (-) end towards the end cap. Four batteries are required.
