All Aboard Florida deserves strong support Recent letter from Mark Wilson, President and CEO of the Florida Chamber of Commerce, to Florida Governor Rick Scott. Dear Governor Scott, As the President of the Florida Chamber of Commerce, I am writing on behalf of a growing coalition of chambers of commerce in support of All Aboard Florida, the express, intercity passenger rail system that will connect Miami and Orlando. The development of a privately-funded, high-speed, passenger rail service in Florida would spur additional economic activity in a region where jobs, infrastructure and long-term economic development are needed. All Aboard Florida will drive substantial economic development in the region and spur new economic activity throughout the state. As a privately-funded project that is not seeking any state Mark Wilson or federal grants or ongoing subsidies, All Aboard President/ Florida will bring important economic benefits to CEO, Florida the region on both an immediate and long-term Chamber of basis. Commerce Based on an independent economic study, the project is forecasted to create more than 10,000 jobs during construction between mid-2014 and mid-2016, and generate more than $200 million in tax revenues for state and local governments through 2021 and $500 million per year in the state’s production of goods and services over the first five years. Moreover, the development and operation of a high-speed passenger rail service will create additional opportunities for transit-oriented development that could generate approximately $1.1 billion in economic impact and result in almost $425 million in additional earnings, according to All Aboard Florida. As with any major transportation or infrastructure project, there will be impacts that must be mitigated. However, we cannot let those impacts overshadow the long- and short-term benefits that All Aboard Florida will bring to the state. If we are to compete with other states to increase visitors and continue growing our population and business development, then we must have reliable, alternative ways for people to travel and do business without relying solely on our system of roads. I respectfully request that you consider the support of the coalition of Florida chambers, including Orlando Inc., Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, the Chamber of Commerce of The Palm Beaches, Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, Homestead-Florida City Chamber of Commerce and the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce as important voices in this project. Our growing group of supporting chambers understands that local support from business owners and local chambers for projects with such a positive statewide impact is an important part of the success of the project. — Mark Wilson, President and CEO PROFESSIONAL NETWORKING YPOP HotSpot cools down in summer Members of the Young Professionals of the Palm Beaches (YPOP) were given the opportunity to check out South Florida’s newest skating facility, Palm Beach Ice Works. The state-of-theart Olympic size ice facility boasts a gymnastics studio and fully equipped gym. The evening was so much fun, and YPOP members cooled down this HotSpot with new skating tricks they learned. For more information about joining YPOP, e-mail Jamie Walton at [email protected]. Revolutions Member Mixer The Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches recently headed to Revolutions — a 35,000-squarefoot, luxury entertainment facility located in the heart of CityPlace — for a successful mixer. CHAMBER TESTIMONIAL “Within the last two years, we’ve expanded our businesses and opened an office in West Palm Beach. Personally, I relocated to Palm Beach County from Southern California. As a business owner and being fairly new to West Palm Beach, I wanted to be more involved with the community and learn from current leaders in our city. When I lived in California, I was accepted into a leadership program there. It was a great program but did not have the structure and dedication from key city officials. As a graduate of the 2014 Leadership West Palm Beach class, I felt the program had great exposure to a variety of aspects to the community, ranging from the government through the arts. I would recommend this program to individuals that want to further develop themselves as leaders of the community and want to make a positive impact within the city of West Palm Beach.” — Daniel Gittere, Executive Vice President of VSP Marketing Graphic Group, Inc.
