20 MAY 16, 2014 TWO RIVER PEOPLE By Lynne Ward RUMSON GARDEN CLUB’S CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION T he Rumson Garden Club was founded in 1914 and has been a member of the Garden Club of America since 1916 with the mission of stimulating the knowledge and love of gardening, as well as to restore, improve and protect the quality of the environment through educational programs and action in the fields of conservation and civic improvement. Over the years the RGC has engaged in many charitable endeavors, not to mention the plethora of beautification projects all over the peninsula. Today the club is as vibrant as ever and recently hosted a Centennial Luncheon for over 200 women at the Rumson Country Club River House. The event featured the quite humorous interior designer and author, Mario Buatta as its dynamic guest speaker. The event honored Thomas White (left) with the Literacy Champion Award, Marilyn Broege (second from right) with the Literacy Advocate Award, and Bar r y Semple (right) with the Literacy Education Excellence Award. The three honorees are joined here by Becky Lucas, executive director of the agency. The LVMC has been helping adults attain the literacy skills necessary to function effectively in all areas of their lives since 1983. LVMC tutors work one-on-one with adult students and in small groups to provide these services free of charge. Inspired by the Kentucky Derby held that evening and shown in a transformed RSPA Panther Hall, the “Race for the Panthers” event brought supporters together for a spectacular evening of gaming, and silent and chance auctions in support of the school. The panther is the official mascot of the Ranney School, located in Tinton Falls.
