Giulia Rossi Vairo.j LE JAN Régine Professor Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, France Medieval Period BIOGRAPHY Born in France. Régine Le Jan gained a PhD. in History in1967. Then, she returned to teaching and research while preparing her habilitation (Docteur ès Lettres) that she obtained in 1992. In her thesis, she examines how the kinship system supported the rise of the aristocracy VII and VIIIth century. In 1993, she became professor of medieval history at the University of Valenciennes and then two years later at the University of Lille. She then participated in the international program ‘Transformation of the World Woman’ of the European Science Foundation. Between 1994 and 2001, her research was devoted to the study of social ties in a Frankish kingdom th th (between the 6 and the 10 centuries), which does not preclude comparisons with Lorraine and Germany. Régine Le Jan analyses the relationships created by kinship, friendship, alliance, marriage, fidelity, dependence, and their developments related to structures of power and kinship In 1996, she received the 1st prize Gobert for her book Famille et pouvoir dans le monde franc (VIIeXe siècles) - Essai d’anthropologie sociale, published after her State Thesis. In 2002, she joined Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, and for the research activity, the Laboratory of Western medieval studies in Paris (LAMOP) - CNRS. She co-organizes the international research program ‘Texts and Identities in early Middle Ages’ with Prof. Rosamond McKitteric, Mayke de Jong, Ian Wood and Walter Pohl. This group was expanded in 2003 to Régine Le Jan from the University Paris 1 and, in 2009, to François Bougard from University Paris Ouest5. She also participates in the program im Staat früh Mittelalter with Hans Werner Goetz, Jörg Jarnut Walter Pohl, Ian Wood) She is also Director of the Master Histoire et Anthropologie des mondes médiévaux et modernes, University of Paris 1, and was Vice-President from 1993 to 2001 then President from 2001 to 2010 of the Société des Historiens Médiévistes de l'Enseignement Supérieur Public (SHMESP).
