PL Jeffs Early Career Pharmacist Award 2013
In 2013, the SHPA SA/NT Branch introduced the new PL Jeffs Early Career Pharmacist Award.
The PL Jeffs Early Career Pharmacist Award is an encouragement award intended to recognize an early career
young pharmacist who has made a significant contribution to either:
•
hospital pharmacy practice in South Australia or the Northern Territory,
•
SHPA, or
•
their workplace
This award recognises the significant contribution of Mr P. Lance Jeffs as one of the inaugural members of SHPA and first president. He was well recognised in South Australia, and nationally, as a leading hospital
pharmacist for his pivotal work involving the
introduction of sterile eye drop formulations, which were later documented in Martindale and Australian Pharmaceutical Formulary. He began the first Clinical Pharmacy
and Drug information services and informed

the profession both locally and overseas. He
also had a keen interest in encouraging
young Pharmacists in their profession. His extraordinary achievements and work was recognised by the SHPA
and subsequently was awarded the SHPA Glaxo Medal of Merit. For further information, please visit
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lance_Jeffs>.
This year we had three very high quality nominations for outstanding pharmacists within our branch. They
were Catherine Hughes, Luke Grzeskowiak and Sally Marotti. At the SHPA SA/NT 2013 Annual Branch
Meeting, SHPA was pleased to announce Luke Grzeskowiak as the inaugural winner of the PL Jeffs Early Career
Pharmacist Award.
Luke has been an elected member of the Branch Committee since
2009 and during this time has served as continuing education
coordinator, convened two symposiums and been a member of the
SHPA Research and Development Grants Advisory committee. Luke
developed a passion for Women's Health during his internship at the
Women’s and Children’s Hospital. He completed a PhD at UniSA
focussing on the feasibility of using routinely collected health data to
examine long term effects of medication use in pregnancy. Since then
he has generated a number of local, national and international
research collaborations, publications and presentations. Luke has
continued his research as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, in the
Pregnancy and Development Research Group at The University of
Adelaide . and has also worked as a senior clinical pharmacist in
Women’s and Children’s Health at Flinders Medical Centre. Luke was
recognised in his nomination as a respected clinician, researcher and
educator with the potential to become an international leader in his
field. SHPA would also like to congratulate Catherine and Sally on
being nominated for this prestigious award in 2013. Their

nominations were testament to their significant achievements in
hospital pharmacy and contributions to SHPA thus far as early career
pharmacists.

SHPA SA/NT Branch Student Research and Development Awards
In 2013, The SHPA SA/NT Branch launched a new Student Research and Development Award through UniSA
and Charles Darwin University to recognise excellence in student research in pharmacy.
UniSA
UniSA fourth year pharmacy students who undertook a
research project as part of the honours or placement
program were asked to nominate themselves for the
award. Nominations consisted of an abstract of the
research undertaken and a short description of its
relevance to pharmacy practice.
We had nominations from Joy Liew for her research on
inappropriate antipsychotic use among aged-care in
metropolitan Adelaide and Rebecca Thompson for her
research on an investigation into the frequency and nature
of drug related problems in the Women’s Health Unit at
the Lyell McEwin Hospital.
Both Joy and Rebecca presented their research at the
SHPA SA/NT Branch October Continuing Education
Meeting to members and a judging panel including Steve
Morris, Chris Doecke, Hayley Vasileff and Richard Marotti.
Rebecca Thompson was selected as the South Australian
winner of this award and received her award at the SHPA
SA/NT 2013 Annual Branch Meeting. Congratulations to
Rebecca and thankyou to our judging panel.

Charles Darwin University
In October, Northern Territory hospital pharmacists were privileged to receive presentations from three
Charles Darwin University (CDU) Honours Students. Thanks to videoconferencing, pharmacists from Gove and
Alice Springs were able to watch Aaron Khan, Julia Knobloch and Samuel Keitaanpaa present in the Royal
Darwin Hospital's auditorium.
Aaron's research aimed to establish a formula for Ivermectin suspension for use in hospitals and community
pharmacies. Julia aimed to identify whether appropriate use of a Peak Flow Meter improved individual
asthma self-management. Sam investigated the impact of uncollected medicines and the influence of stock
control and prescribing practices on Quality Use of Medicines in Top End clinics.
Aaron was selected as the winner for the NT Student Research Award. Congratulations to all students for
their hard work and their contributions to improving the world of pharmacy and thank you to the CDU staff
and supervisors for their support.
Retiring Committee Members and Awards
At the 2013 SHPA SA/NT Annual Branch Meeting, we took the time to thank our members retiring for the
branch committee in 2013.
Richard Marotti retired from the committee after completing a 3-year term. Richard was the chair of the
branch in 2011 and 2012. His leadership and contributions to the committee have been invaluable and we
would like to thank him on behalf of the committee and membership.
Hamed Shahnam retired from the committee after a 3-year term. Hamed has been an asset to the committee
over the past 3-years, as a committee member and as treasurer. We thank him and wish him all the best in his
future career.
Misha Shahbandi retired from the committee after 1-year during which she served as newsletter editor. We
thank her for her work in 2013 and wish her all the best as she joins the Queensland Branch of SHPA.
Alexandra Greig, Lisa Kitto and Jeremy Tehan retire
after being our intern observers on the committee in
2013. We would like to thank them for their
contributions to the committee this year,
particularly for their involvement in the SHPA/UniSA
Careers in Hospital Pharmacy Presentation and in
organising the 2013 ABM and dinner.
In 2013, The SHPA SA/NT Branch launched a new

Early Career Pharmacist Leadership Seminar 2014
May 17th-18th
EARLY CAREER PHARMACIST LEADERSHIP SEMINAR—REGISTRATION NOW OPEN
http://cpd.shpa.org.au/Seminars-and-Symposiums/Leadership
SHPA continue to offer a wide ranging Continued Educational programme and now this includes a specific
seminar series targeted at Early Career Pharmacists (less than 10 years’ experience) as part of the launch of
the Leadership and Management Reference Group this year. The L&M Reference group will target
programmes tailored to all levels of practice and these will be advertised throughout 2014 and beyond.
The inaugural Early Career Leadership Seminar will be held right here in Adelaide (17th -18th May 2014)
facilitated by Roger Hunter (Clinical Psychologist) and Catherine Hughes, Chair Leadership and Management
Reference Group.
Who might this seminar appeal to? If you have less than 10 years experience and aren’t necessarily in a
Management role. If you are an AHP2 or AHP3 pharmacist you are required to lead in situations even when
‘not in charge’ so need to be able to adapt your style to work with others.
What will the seminar cover? opportunity to understand your personal leadership characteristics, identify
the foundations of your style and how that affects your interaction with others including ways to influence
and motivate. You will also challenge your professional leadership in respect to ensuring quality care of
patients.
What this seminar is not… this isn’t management training – you won’t learn how to manage staff, it wont
cover HR or running meetings, this is about your personal leadership growth - however the L&M Reference
Group will be delivering opportunities for middle and senior management into the future in the form of online
education modules, targeted seminar and leadership series.
This is a CPD accredited event for 4-hours Group-1 and 8-hours Group 2 (total 20 hours CPD credit S2014/16
NEW Continuing Education Program 2014
FREE for SHPA members
In recent years the SA/NT branch has observed a significant reduction in attendances at its monthly CE
meetings. This is likely the result of increasing availability of alternative high quality CE activities offered at a
national level as part of your SHPA membership.
The SA/NT branch committee remains committed to providing high quality CE opportunities. In the recent
needs assessment survey, members were asked to vote and comment on alternative approaches towards the
delivery of local CE activities in 2014. As a result of this feedback, the committee has decided to modify the CE
program for 2014.
In place of monthly CE meetings for 2014, we will hold two half-day symposiums, which will be held on
Saturday afternoons. These will be a free for members.
The focus of this first half-day symposium will be around health economics: “Dollars and Sense – Balancing
Health Costs in Patient Care”.
The first seminar is likely to be held in June. We will inform members regarding the date very shortly.
All members are reminded of the significant CE opportunities on offer as part of their SHPA membership:
http://cpd.shpa.org.au/.
NEW Continuing Education Program 2014
FREE for SHPA members
To support the continuing professional development of SHPA members, SHPA is
now offering some additional continuing education online in the form of
webinars.
So keep an eye out on your emails for these national CE Webinars or visit the
SHPA website for updates.
NOTE: Pharmacists need 40 CPD credits each year, of which up to 50% (20
credits) may be Group 1 CPD, to satisfy the Pharmacy Board of Australia's
CPD standard.
