ATHLETICS WELLINGTON COACHING COURSES 2014/15 Athletics Wellington is offering clubs a variety of course and workshop opportunities this season. These include scheduled courses PLUS options for clubs to book the following courses/presentations at their clubs. COURSES AVAILABLE GET SET GO PRACTICAL COACHING COURSE: 2 hour practical coaching courses: Saturday 4 October, 10am to 12pm, Newtown Park Saturday 11 October, 10am to 12pm, Newtown Park Sunday 12 October, Hutt Recreation Ground (tbc) Sunday 19 October, 3pm to 4.30pm, Grenada North Park, Tawa, Wellington Athletics Wellington introduced the GET SET GO programme to three clubs last season. If any clubs are interested in this programme for their 4 to 6 year olds please contact [email protected] Get Set Go is an Athletics NZ programme for young children focusing on learning the techniques of running, jumping and throwing through lots of fun based games and activities. Get Set Go includes a whole variety of new activities for kids and their parents to have fun with. Get Set Go is supported by Active Post and New Zealand’s Get Set Go Amabassador is our world famous – world champion Valerie Adams. Athletics NZ has developed the Get Set Go activities relating to athletics. Coaching Cue cards have been developed to go with these activities, which make it VERY easy for parents and caregivers to get involved. This course is for anyone overseeing the Get Set Go programme at their club and for any parents and teenage athletes who are keen to help out on their club day/club night with this age group. Heaps of fun activities. IAAF LEVEL 2 COACHING COURSE / ATHLETICS WELLINGTON COACH DEVELOPMENT COURSE IAAF LEVEL 2 The Level 2 course is intended to train coaches for effective work with youth and beginner athletes from 10 years and older. The Level 2 syllabus covers all event groups and emphasises the practical skills of coaching. At the same time, the Level 2 course provides a theoretical base, which is sufficient to allow coaches to continue learning, either through their own efforts or within the structure of the Coach Education Certification Scheme (CECS). Entry for the Level 2 is granted to active coaches and those who have coached previously and would like to upskiill. You do not need to have completed a Level 1 course to register for the Level 2 Courses. We encourage all participants to undertake the course in its entirety, but are happy to discuss options that are of a lesser degree with individuals that don't wish to be assessed. We encourage you to sign up for any or all of the courses below. Please note: to receive your Level 2 IAAF Coaching Accreditation you need to complete and pass the assessments at all five courses. ATHLETICS WELLINGTON COACH DEVELOPMENT COURSE If you attend any of the IAAF Level 2 Coaching Course Modules you will receive either an 'Attendance' or 'Attendance and Passed' Athletics Wellington Coach Development Course Certificate. You can register for any of the modules below without intending to complete all five modules of the IAAF Level 2 Coaching Course. You can choose to attend any of the below modules and not be assessed. Or you can choose the assessment option. To receive the IAAF Level 2 qualification you need to attend, be assessed and pass all five modules. Athletics Wellington would like to encourage as many volunteers and coaches as possible to attend any of the IAAF Run, Jump or Throw Modules. Cost: $50 per person per module IAAF Level 2 Coaching Course: Jumps Module, Run Module, Throws Module: Each module is a two day course held over Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5pm: Throws Course: Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 October, Newtown Park Run Course: Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 October at Newtown Park Jumps Course: Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 December at Newtown Park IAAF Level 2 Coaching Course - Basic Theory Module: Part 1 Two day course held over Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5pm - dates to be confirmed IAAF Level 2 Coaching Course - Basic Theory Module: Part 2 Two day course held over Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5pm - dates to be confirmed To register email [email protected] RUN JUMP THROW COURSE: Run Jump Throw is part of Athletics New Zealand’s Community Coaching Pathway. Run Jump Throw is based on the philosophy that the development of skills in a fun environment is the key to participation. Sports skills and other physical activities should be modified to suit the physical, intellectual and emotional development of students. Emphasis is on the development of fundamental athletics movement patterns and is the foundation to correct and emphasise movement techniques. The Run Jump Throw programme is built around the 150-page Run Jump Throw Manual which provides a progressive approach to athletics skill teaching for 8 to 13 year olds. Suitable for all coaches and teachers, the resource includes teaching strategies for running, jumping and throwing. Length of Session: 3 hours Date and Time: Please contact Jo Murray with a few options of dates and times that suit you Venue: Your own club grounds or a venue chosen by you Cost: $10 per person (maximum cost of $150 per club) Presenters: Mark Harris, Qualified Run Jump Throw Presenter. Training to become RJT Presenters in September: Andrea Lambert, Shaka Sola Please note Athletics NZ is redeveloping the Run Jump Throw programme. Our RJT deliverers are being trained at the end of September so will be available to run courses at your club following this. PRACTICAL COACHING COURSE FOR CLUB NIGHT COACHES • • • Do you have parents who have helped or are going to help at club nights who want some ideas on what to do with the range of kids who come along on club nights? Would you like our experienced team of coaches to come to you to share their knowledge on ways to run your club nights so kids learn new skill progressions each week? We have a fantastic group of coaches who are available to come to your club to upskill your volunteers who want to learn more so club nights are fun for them as well as the kids Length of Session: 1.5 to 2 hours Date and Time: Please contact Jo Murray with a few options of dates and times that suit you Venue: Your own club grounds or a venue chosen by you Presenters/Coaches (3 will come to your club): Rod Plimmer, Willy Szeto, Shaka Sola, John Quinn, Mark Harris, Amanda Goldsmith, Andrea Lambert, Mike Ritchie Cost: $10 per person (maximum cost of $150 per club) Disciplines covered: ▪ RUN: Sprints (including starts & relays), hurdles, middle distance. ▪ JUMP: long jump, high jump ▪ THROW: shot put, discus The full session will be split into three 30-minute sessions. Those who attend can choose three different disciplines i.e. long jump, high jump and sprints or discus, middle distance and long jump, etc. Following consultation with you we will provide a list of the disciplines to be covered that you can send to your club members. The aim is to encourage more parents to volunteer as coaches at club nights by giving them the knowledge, confidence and tools to upskill your club members throughout the season in particular the older athletes at your club. TOPICS WE CAN PRESENT AT YOUR CLUB OR VARIOUS VENUES Length of Session: 1 hour – these could be run at your club one evening or in the weekend Date and Time: Please contact Jo Murray with a few options of dates and times that suit you.
