SWSS Newsletter for October 2014

SWSS Newsletter for October 2014
Skagit Widowed Support Services is a non-profit non-denominational service group led by volunteers
http://www.skagitwidowedsupportservices.org
Our Founders: Linda Hadden; Linda Grotzke Vanderploeg; Kim Wahlberg Sorenson
Our Goal is to provide a safe supportive environment and to offer practical assistance to all men and
women during their adjustment to the loss of a spouse by death. We also provide fellowship through our
social events where you do not have to feel so alone. You receive our mailings in response made by a
family member, your mortuary or other caring friends.
Some people experience shock after a loss, saying things like “I feel numb” and displaying no tears or
emotions. Sometimes there is denial. At some point a person begins to feel and to hurt. It is very
important not to suppress your feelings. Suppressed feelings often surface at a later time in unhealthy
ways. Shared feelings are a gift, and bring a closeness to all involved. The grieving person often tends to
withdraw from social relationships.
SWSS offers a FREE 6-week GRIEF DISCUSSION GROUP series twice yearly during March and
September. The next session for 2014 will begin on Tuesday, September 2, 2014, 1 – 3 pm. At the
Burlington Senior Center. This is an excellent way to meet others who are dealing with some of the same
things you are. If you have questions, need help, or are interested in attending one of these sessions,
please call Terri Heuterman (336-3037) or E-mail: [email protected].
Our Sponsors: Evans Funeral Home; Hawthorne Funeral Home; Hulbush Funeral Home; Kerns

SWSS Election of Board Members and Officers
Skagit Widowed Support Services is a non-profit corporation. The corporate by-laws require
board members and officers stand for election annually. The annual election will take place at
the December 10th board meeting. If you are a member in good standing (if you receive a
newsletter you are) and wish to participate as a board member you should attend this meeting.
This is your chance to help SWSS continue to provide support to the widowed people of Skagit
and Island Counties. Member support and participation on SWSS board is essential to continue
the SWSS mission. The board has 13 or more members elected to serve for 3 years. The
officers of the organization are the president, vice president, secretary and the treasurer. The
officers are elected for a term of 1 year.
Come and participate!! The meeting will be held at the Mount Vernon Denny’s
on December 10th at 9:30 AM. Let your voices be heard!!

2014 at 4:00 P.M. The buffet dinner will be catered by Joy’s Bakery of Sedro-Woolley. Joy’s
Bakery requires a head count to know how much food to prepare so those attending must RSVP in
advance. Additionally, all attending need to prepay for their dinners; no money will be collected
the evening of the dinner. Please get your reservations and payments in early. All reservations and
payments must be received by December 1. The last page of this newsletter is the menu and RSVP

Message from your board President:
The annual SWSS potluck picnic at the home of Verna and Robert Pederson
was very nice. Everyone had a good time out there under their huge shade tree. It
was great. Thank you again Verna and Robert, and maybe we can do it again next
year.
President’s Joke for the Month:
Moe and Joe grew up together and were best friends. Their passion in life
was baseball where they played little league and major league all their lives. Now
retired and both in a nursing home, they wondered if there is baseball in heaven?
They made a pact that who ever dies first will come back to tell the other. Moe
died and he came back to Joe in a dream telling him he had good news and bad
news. The good news is, there is baseball in heaven. Everyone is young, no pain,
you never get tired and play baseball all day very day. Its just wonderful. The bad
news, Joe, is you are pitching on Saturday.
