Brazil: First application of the BREAKDOWN system utilizing D

PERFORMANCE REPORT
Brazil: First application of the BREAKDOWN
system utilizing D-SOLVER EXTRA chelant
“ BREAKDOWN† breaker system with D-SOLVER EXTRA† chelant proved
as an effective solution which was easy to engineer and prepare at rig
site. We met the customer’s expectations with a one drum product, while
increasing performance and minimizing logistics and QHSE exposure.”

The Situation
In a previous development campaign, D-SOLVER PLUS† chelant was used in the BREAKDOWN filter cake clean up system. However,
for the next two stages in field development, the customer wanted to eliminate additional steps necessary to prepare the finished
product, which included acidizing and transportation. They also wanted to simplify mixing logistics on the rig. The second campaign
would have 7 producers and 4 injector wells, while the third phase of development would have 5 producers and 2 injector wells. The
producer wells would be horizontal open hole gravel pack completions utilizing 210 µ sand screens, and the injector wells would have
open hole completions with 8 gauge stand alone sand screens. The reservoir is predominately sandstone with some intercalations of
shale.
The Solution
Based on extensive testing carried out between M-I SWACO Houston Wellbore Productivity (WP) Technical Service lab, M-I SWACO
Macaé lab, and the operator fluids group, D-SOLVER EXTRA chelant was chosen from a battery of tests to be used in the BREAKDOWN
breaker system. The use of D-SOLVER EXTRA chelant eliminated extra steps that were required with other chelants previously used.
D-SOLVER EXTRA chelant was also chosen based on logistics and the ease of engineering at the rig-site. D-SOLVER EXTRA chelant is a
liquid which is easily mixed, and does not require pH adjustment with acid or alkali as other chelants for similar density applications do.
From testing, it was determined that the optimum concentration of D-SOLVER EXTRA chelant for the BREAKDOWN system was 17.5% v/v
for producer wells and 27.5% v/v for injector wells.
The Results
First oil was produced 9 months after the well was completed, and production met target expectations.
The injector wells are open, and seismic data shows that the wells have good injection results.
The Details
After reaching TD, the open hole section was displaced to FLOPRO SF† fluid at 150 m (492 ft) above the casing shoe. At that depth, the
casing was displaced to brine and the riser indirectly displaced to seawater and then brine.
The drill sting was pulled out and screens were run in hole. When the screens reached TD, the well was displaced to 1.14 SG (9.5 lb/gal)
brine. On producer wells, the breaker was spotted after gravel packing. On injectors, which were stand alone screen completions, the
BREAKDOWN breaker system was spotted after displacement.
The volume pumped was double the open hole volume of 1.164 SG (9.7 lb/gal) breaker (100% excess).
After spotting the breaker, the washpipe was pulled at maximum speed to above the fluid loss control device, while the breaker started
working on the filter cake.
After confirmation that the fluid loss control valve was closed, any excess breaker was reversed out and put back into MPT tanks. All
captured breaker was sent back to town for proper disposal.
