Gates Millennium Scholar
Round Lake High School is proud to announce that one of their own Class of 2014 graduates,
Misael Arrieta, has been awarded the Gates Millennium Scholarship! According to the
Foundation’s website www.gmsp.org, “The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program, funded by
a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established in 1999 to provide
outstanding African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander America, and
Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education
in any discipline area of interest.”
Board of Education
Misael was one of 1,000 scholars selected for the GMS Class of 2014. It is important to note that
more than 52,000 students applied for this scholarship!

Round Lake High School is so grateful for the opportunity to partner with the College of Lake
County’s TRiO Educational Talent Search program. Penina Noonan, Student Services Specialist
with ETS, created an initiative for the 2013-2014 school year to conduct biweekly scholarship
workshops in the library at Round Lake High School. “Through ETS, I had the privilege of working
Lori Berdenis
with Misael during every scholarship workshop for seven months. He rarely missed an opportunity
Vice President
to work on a scholarship opportunity with me.
As a result Misael won five scholarships,

including the full ride that the Gates Foundation
Annette Negrete McGinley provides,” commented Noonan.

Change in Breakfast/Lunch Program
We are pleased to inform you that RLAS-116 will be implementing a new option available to
schools participating in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program for the upcoming
school year! The new program is called the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP).
FREE AND REDUCED MEAL APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE REQUIRED from our families for the
2014-2015 school year. The CEP program will provide a healthy breakfast and lunch each school
day at NO CHARGE for ALL students enrolled during the 2014-2015 school year. This program
will not include second meals and a la carte purchases, but these items may be purchased for an
additional cost.
Please note: No application is needed for the food program. However, should you need
assistance with school fees you are required to complete a Fee Waiver application
