Quicksliver
Quicksilver's recording, FANTASTICUS, features extraordinary 17th century German music in the Stilus Fantasticus,
“instituted to display genius,” in the words of mathematician Athanasius Kirchner. The recording explores one of the
cultural revolutions of the time, the development of the sonata, a purely instrumental work with no agenda but the
imagination of the composer and no standard formal shape except the passionate give-and-take of friends in conversation.
This “new music” is virtuosic, experimental, unexpected, and deeply moving: the closest we come to wordless rhetoric.

Soprano Mary Elizabeth Southworth, flutist Danielle Hundley, clarinetist Marianne Breneman, and pianist Philip
Amalong, formed the ensemble Conundrum in 2005. The group’s name suggests both their unusual ensemble and also
their openness and need to experiment with adventurous programming. After more than a decade of delighting
audiences with their discoveries of repertoire for this ensemble and an active commissioning program, they have gathered
the best of this music together for this their first recording. The result is From the Diamond Grid: first recordings of
seven new works written or re-scored for the ensemble, plus one old favorite of theirs, which was modified for their
instrumentation.

Like volume one of East Meets West, this recording is a collection of new music for clarinet by Chinese composers who
have lived, studied, and worked overseas. The compositions combine Chinese cultural elements with Western art music
to create a unique intersection of cultures through the use of tone colors produced by the combination of clarinet with
Chinese instruments, sound effects created with the use of both Chinese and Western musical forms and harmonic
language, and a blend of classical and contemporary musical idioms. All the music on this recording was written or
arranged for clarinetist Jun Qian. On the music faculty at Baylor University, Jun Qian is principal clarinetist of the Waco
Symphony. Previously he was principal clarinetist of the Shanghai Philharmonic and studied at the Shanghai
Conservatory and Eastman. He has concertized throughout China, and has performed and taught in the U.S., Europe,
Asia and Canada.

Composer/pianist James Adler has been hailed as a composer who “writes for both chorus and orchestra with uncommon
imagination.” His extensive list of compositions is highlighted by Memento mori: An AIDS Requiem, which has been
performed around the world and is available on Albany Records. As a pianist, he has performed throughout the U.S. and
Europe, making his performing debut at 16 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He is a graduate of the Curtis
Institute of Music and serves on the faculty at Saint Peter’s University. For this, his third recording on Albany Records,
Adler’s music and performing virtuosity are showcased. Titled Introspections, James Adler used the definition (selfexamination, soul-searching, to look within) as a framework for his choice of works for the disc.

Pacific Northwest. Bloch spent his last years in Oregon, while Bukvich has spent his career on the faculty at the

Victor Herbert and Fred de Gresac’s wonderful 1922 score, Orange Blossoms, is the story of an hilarious culture clash
between Americans and Parisians in the Roaring Twenties in the French capital and on the Riviera. Orange Blossoms,
written late in Herbert’s career, reflected the public’s new interest in the jazz age and musical comedy. Director Michael
Phillips liberally adapted the original three-act musical into a streamlined two-act version accentuating the most unique
and innovative aspects of the script and lyrics. The Light Opera of New York was founded in 2006 as a professional
company devoted to the performance of staged operettas and operetta concerts.

25 Tracks including After You’ve Gone; I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles, etc. (55:35)
1919: "Jazzin' Around and Paintin' the Town" brings you 25 selections from the year Americans returned from war, the
White Sox threw the World Series, and labor strife swept the nation. Having "done their bit" and denied raises during the
war effort, workers across the country were ready to get their due in peacetime, but business owners resisted. In February
1919, a general strike in Seattle, noteworthy for its peaceful and orderly conduct, brought the city to a standstill. Huge
strikes in the coal and steel industries followed later in the year, and they all were denounced as the work of
Bolshevists—a growing sentiment that unleashed a Red Scare throughout the land. The Chicago White Sox also couldn't
petition for raises, and they certainly couldn't strike back then, so several players conspired with gamblers to throw the
World Series. They would become known as the Chicago Black Sox. The music that provided the soundtrack to this
season of unrest is notable for its rueful character—even the numbers from the wildly successful Ziegfeld Follies of 1919.
Waltzes and minor keys dominate the post-war soundscape, but the tone is thoughtful and never turns mawkish. Many of
the songs—"After You've Gone," "I'll Say She Does," "A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody" and others—are all-time classics.
Others were so popular as to require the inclusion here of multiple interpretations. In Henry Burr's hands, "Beautiful
Ohio" is a haunting ballad, while Joseph Knecht's Waldorf-Astoria Orchestra makes it a brisk, muscular waltz. Campbell
and Burr sing "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" with mist in their eyes, while Ben Selvin's Novelty Orchestra make it a
playful dance that highlights the xylophone. And "Till We Meet Again" was the biggest hit of all, a fitting coda to mark
the end of World War I. Top performers include Marion Harris, Arthur Fields, Nora Bayes, Bert Williams, and Al Jolson,
along with the pre-jazz sound of Joseph C. Smith's Orchestra doing "The Vamp," and Billy Murray crying in "The
Alcoholic Blues" about the coming of Prohibition.

“I’ve long admired Anne-Marie McDermott’s unsurpassed performances of Haydn. Her understanding of his music is
superb and her playing of it so apt and expressive that I could not resist her invitation to provide cadenzas for one of
Haydn’s concerti. It was a joy to write them, and reproducing my own thoughts in the language of this ancient composer
was exhilarating. It goes without saying that their realization in sound is exactly what I had intended.”

between 1916 and 1949, the Boston Symphony performed his music on 85 occasions. Peter Bay, Anton Nel, and the
Austin Symphony give us vivid performances of these fine scores.

Rick Benjamin, conductor (DDD 77:52)
The motion picture is without doubt one of the most powerful art and entertainment forms in human history. And few
would argue with the fact that a vital element of any film is its music: indeed, most hit movies owe a large part of their
success to their scores (think Star Wars or The Sting to cite just two of hundreds of examples). With the advent of sound
films (i.e. “talking pictures”) in the late 1920s up to the present time, motion picture music has been preserved on the
films themselves, and can be readily experienced in viewings at theaters and via DVDs. But the soundscape of early
cinema—the age of so-called “silent movies”—is hardly documented at all. Because of this almost total lack of ability to
experience early film music, many wrong assumptions are made about it. Without any familiarity at all, writers and
“researchers” often breezily dismiss music of the silent film era as “crude,” “primitive,” or otherwise beneath regard. But
nothing could be further from the truth. The fact is that the entire vocabulary of film music as we know it today was
developed in America between 1910 and 1925; there was—and still exists in the form of scores—a vast and beautiful
repertoire of film music created by talented composers during that period. Yet virtually none of this important material is
available on recordings (in any format) for research and enjoyment. Into this surprising historical void comes this
recording, which presents for the first time the original scores of America’s pioneer film composers, including William
Axt, Maurice Baron, Irénée Bergé, Gaston Borch, M.L. Lake, Erno Rapée, Hugo Riesenfeld, Victor L. Schertzinger, J.S.
Zamecnik, and others. The twenty-eight pieces are sequenced in a way that will lead listeners into creating their own
imaginary “daydream movie” as the CD is played. The extensive accompanying essay explores the widespread use of
cinema orchestras (there were more than 8,000 of these in America by 1921); the methods for scoring (“setting”) the films
(“photoplays”); period performance techniques; the nationwide network for publishing and distributing film scores; the
working life of cinema musicians; the influence of brilliant, music loving showmen-exhibitors like Roxy (Samuel L.
Rothepfel); and biographical profiles of the composers represented. Original orchestrations have been selected from the
Capitol Theater’s 1,000–title collection of c. 1900 to 1928 cinema scores, played by the world’s leading silent film
accompanists (with 650 screenings to date)—the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra.
