Fieldwork Progress (SWMU 20)
•
Visual survey and surface
clearance (complete)
•
Subsurface MEC investigation of
target anomalies is underway
(weekends only due to proximity
to SPAWAR facilities)
•
No MEC, MD, or RRD identified
during visual survey/surface
clearance; all debris was nonmunitions-related debris (NMRD)

Visual survey and surface clearance
(complete)
•
Subsurface MEC investigation of target
anomalies (complete)
•
No MEC, MD, RRD identified; all debris
was NMRD
•
No finds (23) replaced with alternative
digs. Surface clearance completed
before reacquisition. Other target
anomalies found to be associated with
utilities, guardrail, etc.

(complete)
•
Subsurface MEC investigation of
target anomalies (complete); 7 no
finds replaced
•
Unsurveyable areas due to unstable
piles of construction debris
•
No MEC, MD, or RRD identified; all
debris was NMRD

(complete, except for potential fuze
masses)
•
Subsurface investigation (not yet
complete)
•
Initial Mk I fuze demolition completed
•
Large buried masses of potential fuzes
identified in tidal zone but unable to
remove under current ESP and
conditions (response to be determined)

Fieldwork Progress (SWMU 81)
•
Visual survey and surface clearance
(ongoing)
•
MD and RRD has been identified
•
Demolition of inert fuzes and training
shapes (5-inch Mk 64, 155mm
projectile, Mk 81, Mk 82, Mk 83,
M117s, and 50-series mine shapes) that
required venting
•
Coordinating with Weapons Safety to
conduct demolition activities while
munitions storage area vacant

Fieldwork Progress (SWMU 82)
•
Visual survey and surface clearance (complete)
•
Subsurface MEC investigation of target
anomalies (complete)
•
MD (40mm practice grenade and indeterminate
frag) and RRD (target vehicle) removed
•

Fieldwork Progress (AOC L)
•
Visual survey and surface clearance (complete)
•
Subsurface MEC investigation of target anomalies
(complete)
•
No MEC identified. MD and RRD primarily
removed from a 2.5-3.0 foot pile (5,500lbs. RRD &
1,500lbs. MD)
•
RRD: ammunition containers, crates, cradles, etc.
•
MD: frag, M1A2 practice grenade components,
fuze debris, inert hedgehog rocket debris, etc.

Fieldwork Progress (AOC N)
•
Visual survey and surface clearance
(complete)
•
Four MEC items (Mk II
grenades)required demolition. All
other items identified were NMRD
(mostly railroad trestle debris).
•
Subsurface MEC investigation of target
anomalies (not yet complete)
•
Diving activities (not yet complete)

Diving Operations Overview
•
Dive during slack water conditions.
Typically one UXO-qualified diver in
water at a time.
•
Unacceptable-to-move MEC detonated
in place underwater. Acceptable-tomove MEC brought to surface for
onshore demolition within MRS.
•
SWMU 25 (Water Range): Reacquire
100 anomaly locations and investigate
using circle-line search with hand-held
metal detector.
•
AOC N: Investigate and resolve 200+
anomalies in inlet area. Possibly
reacquire anomalies in inland area
(similar to SWMU 25) that could not be
addressed by land-based UXO team;
unlikely to be necessary.

Fieldwork Concerns
1.
Remaining fieldwork:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
2.
3.
SWMU 20: Finish subsurface investigation
SWMU 25 (Parking Lot/Burial Area 1): Finish subsurface investigation
SWMU 25 (Burial Area 2): Subsurface investigation and buried potential
fuze masses
SWMU 25 (Water Range): Diving operations
SWMU 81: Finish surface clearance
AOC N: Finish subsurface investigation plus diving activities
All MRSs: RI sampling
Working with EOTI, JB CHS, USACE, & Coast Guard to schedule diving
activities at SWMU 25 (Water Range) & AOC N.
SWMU 25 (TC Dock Finger Pier):
•
•
Will require new or amended planning documents (e.g., Work Plan, ESP,
and Diving Operations Plan)
Likely to be addressed at a later date under a separate contract
