T he Charity Council awarded SATA CommHealth the Special Commendation Award for Board Renewal and Strategic Repositioning at the Charity Governance Awards (CGA) 2014 presentation ceremony on 13 November. CGA recognises charities that have adopted the highest standards of governance and their excellent work, while inspiring others to emulate their best practices. The CGA recognises charities in three award categories: • CGA for small charities/Institutions of a Public Character (IPCs) (Gross annual receipts of less than $1 million in the 2 immediate preceding financial years) • CGA for medium charities/IPCs (Gross annual receipts of between $1 million and $10 million in the 2 immediate preceding financial years) • CGA for large charities/IPCs (Gross annual receipts of $10 million or more in the 2 immediate preceding financial years) SATA CommHealth was presented with a plaque (left image) under the Special Commendation Awards which were given to selected charities for excellence in specific areas of governance. Board succession and renewal plans in SATA CommHealth are aligned to its mission and gaps in expertise and competencies are addressed by sourcing for appropriate candidates. To improve its effectiveness and succession planning, Board Evaluation is also used to review board performance on an ongoing basis. Its strategic management and positioning in the healthcare sector is continuously reviewed and it even involves repositioning when the need arises. On that day, SATA CommHealth held its Community Health Day (CHD) at its premises to provide free health checks to needy elderly and the public. Basic health checks such as body mass index, blood pressure, blood glucose, tonometry, cholesterol test, chest X-Ray were offered to the walk-in participants. Specialised services namely physiotherapy assessment, mammogram and vaccinations were also available during the event. Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Marine Parade GRC Mr Seah Kian Peng graced the event as Guest-ofHonour. He toured the medical centre and was given a brief on the medical equipment and services that were available at SATA CommHealth. Residents In The West Received Free Health Screening In November R esidents in the west were given free health checks on 9th November, Sunday. Another SATA CommHealth Community Health Day (CHD), the third CHD in 2014, was held at the Jurong Medical Centre. This event provided free basic health screening and highly subsidised specialised services such as mammogram and vaccinations to the public at this half-day event. In support of World Osteoporosis Day, SATA CommHealth offered osteoporosis assessment for men and women aged 45 and above at the event to recommend those who were eligible for a thorough screening before recommending a Bone Mineral Density (BMD) scan. Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Finance and Member of Parliament for Jurong GRC, arrived at 9.30am as the Guest-Of-Honour for the event. He toured around the medical centre and mingled with residents present. Mdm Seng Puay Hwang, aged 55, knew about the event from the advertisement in the newspapers and immediately called to book her mammogram appointment. “I thought it was a very good opportunity. One of the participants who went for the health checks was retiree Mr Teng Gau Chin, aged 65. Mr Teng lives in Bukit Batok and was informed of the event through its Community Club. The former National Environment Agency employee said: “I am keen to check my health but most places are expensive. This event helps me to save some money and it is beneficial to the elderly like us.” q 3 | HealthLine | December 2014 CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION TALKS S A Series Of CME Talks Spanning September To October ATA CommHealth kicked off the series of CME talks with three talks being held on 19th September, 1st October and 27th October respectively. These short talks that culminated in non-core CME points for doctors and medical professionals attending the talks. The talks held in the SATA CommHealth Auditorium at its Corporate Headquarters, were part of the Continuing Medical Education (CME) series of talks delivered by renowned medical professionals. September’s talk was focused on two intertwined topics ‘Cancer Screening Saves Lives: Fact or Fiction? and Role of Radiotherapy in Cancer Care’. We were honoured to have two established doctors namely, Dr Zee Ying Kiat, Consultant, Medical Oncologist at Parkway Cancer Centre and Gleneagles/Mount Elizabeth Hospitals and Dr Edward Yang Tuck Loong, Senior Consultant, Radiation Oncology, Parkway Cancer Centre, Gleneagles Hospitals who spoke on topics that dealt with cancer detection and cancer treatment. We wish to thank both Dr Zee and Dr Yang for their views on the topic and their valuable time. Awareness MrCancer Zee Ying Kiat giving a talk on the facts of cancer screening. A talk on radiotherapy by Dr Edward Yang at the CME talk on 19th September. The next talk was held at the Jurong East Community Health Centre on 1 October dealt with ECG Interpretation of Common Cardiac Conditions. The talk was well received with more than 16 doctors attending the talk. The speaker was Dr Jayaram Lingamanaicker, Senior Consultant Cardiologist at Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre. He shared some of his past cases diagnosed with the audience with many showed a keen interest in the topic with numerous questions regarding the most common chronic diseases affecting many Singaporeans. They left the talk satisfied after gaining a deeper understanding of this topic. CME Talk on 1st October was held at Jurong East Community Health Centre. The audience were all ears as Dr Jayaram Lingamanaicker spoke on common cardiac conditions in the Jurong East Community Health Centre training room. The last talk in October focused on Management of Screen Detected Breast Lesions. The speaker was Dr Subash Kumar, Senior Consultant at KKH. Dr Kumar had interesting insights to share with the audience as it was one topic that allowed many doctors to gain a deeper understanding into this area. On top of that, the topic struck a chord with numerous medical issues faced by general practitioners. On the whole, many who attended felt that the talk was impactful and relevant in today’s context. The new award for the Best Medical Centre was about to be presented to the medical centre that scored the best in a patient survey. The factors that gave Jurong Medical Centre the winning edge were that it offered the best customer satisfaction by making patients feel comfortable and also assured that they received the best possible medical care while at the centre.
