S
ATA
CommHealth,
held
its
Community Health Day (CHD) at
Ang Mo Kio medical centre on April
27th to provide residents in the vicinity
with free health checks. The checks
offered range from basic to specialised
health checks.
Participants from Ang Mo Kio and nearby districts; THK SAC Ang Mo Kio (Blk 645); Kebun
Bahru, Teck Ghee and Ci Yuan Community Centres; Asian Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA) and
Al-Muttaqin Mosque arrived at SATA CommHealth Ang Mo Kio medical centre for free health checks.
This is the third time Ang Mo Kio residents
have had an opportunity to monitor their
health. The CHD event took place at Block
715, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 as part of its
mission of promoting lifelong health and
serving the community. Mr Ang Hin Kee,
Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio
GRC graced the event as the Guest-ofHonour.
During the half-day Sunday event, the participants received a range of complimentary basic health screening
tests and specialised tests at a heavily subsidised price which was either for a pre-physiotherapy assessment,
an eye test (visual acuity and tonometry) or other general health checks consisting of chest X-Ray, blood
pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol tests. A tonometry test measures the fluid pressure in the eye,
commonly known as Intraocular Pressure (IOP). This test is usually used to check for glaucoma, an eye disease that
can cause blindness by damaging the nerves at the back of the eye. Participants were encouraged to go for regular eye
checks for early detection.

Mr Yuen Tuck Meng, aged 60, who lives in Ang Mo Kio area

CHD event by Kebun Bahru CC. Both of them decided to
go for their basic health
checks as it was located
near to their home and
was at no charge. He
was very glad that SATA
CommHealth provided
free health checks to
the public. “I will come

World Tuberculosis Day 2014
M
arch 24th marks World TB Day, a
day dedicated to raise awareness
to fight against and prevent
tuberculosis (TB) annually. This year, SATA
CommHealth contributed to the global
awareness campaign by bringing information
on TB prevention, treatment and cure
closer to the public. The campaign was held
at the atrium of Tan Tock Seng hospital.
Print advertisements were published in The
Straits Times and Lian He Zao Bao to remind and
inform the public about the lung disease. The
theme for World TB Day 2014 was ‘Reach The 3

BOARD ANNOUNCEMENTS

He presented many different real world case studies on
blood disorders as well as different proven research studies on the uses of differing drugs for many groups of patients. On top of that, he fielded numerous questions that the
general practitioners had on the various differences
between using the tried-and-tested approach versus newer
medications that had shorter empirical evidence of success.
On the whole, many participants found the talk educational
and were able to relate to it professionally.

PUBLIC AWARENESS
W
Free Spirometry On World No Tobacco Day
orld No Tobacco Day on 31 May is an important day
in the calendar for SATA CommHealth as it creates
awareness through anti-smoking messages
conveyed to the public on this significant day.
This year, news reports on legal age for smoking were
highlighted during the campaign period. Raising the legal
age for smoking in Singapore was discussed last year
and SATA CommHealth CEO Dr K Thomas Abraham
exhorted that in order to reduce the number of smokers
by 2020, bold measures will be necessary to effect the
change. Raising the minimum age to smoke from 18 to 21
was proposed as a viable measure to reduce smoking rates
among the youth.
Dr Abraham said that the increase in young smokers in
Singapore was the main problem which the nation would
be facing in the future. SATA CommHealth is playing an
advocacy role, while it continues to inform and educate
smokers as well as non-smokers on the ill-effects of
smoking.
On World No Tobacco Day 2014, apart from reminding
the public to stay smoke-free for healthy living, SATA
CommHealth also provided free spirometry test to smokers.
It is a pulmonary function test to check how well the lungs are
working and the offer is now extended to HealthLine readers.

HUMAN RESOURCE TRAINING
Emotional Competence And Management Course
D
o you really understand yourself and how your
emotions stir up the reactions of people
around you? Expression of inner feelings from
each and everyone of us can be different and it
is one of the important social skills that all of us,
especially those in the service line, should be enabled with to
communicate well with people.
This year round, SATA CommHealth staff learnt more about
emotional competence, the ability to express one’s feelings,
how to react and communicate effectively. In the two-day
course, Ms Amy Goh, trainer of the course, provided interesting
and interactive lessons and encouraged participation from
staff to better understand themselves and to be a proficient
communicator.
Staff who have attended the course commented that it
was very engaging and they learnt a lot from it. Mr Motti
Abraham who manages the Call Centre said, “It was fruitful
for me.” He adds that the course allowed him to further
understand himself thus enabling him to provide quality
service. Ms Myrla Aquino Villandelgado from Corporate
SATA CommHealth Mobile Medical Services (MMS) was at
