PREPARATION OF WORSHIP
To be of the Earth is to know
the restlessness of being a seed
the darkness of being planted
the struggle toward the light
the pain of growth into the light
the joy of bursting and bearing fruit
the love of being food to someone
the scattering of your seeds
the decay of the seasons
the mystery of death and
the miracle of birth.
- John Soos

PRESENTATION OF OUR COMMON LIFE
*CALL TO WORSHIP
One: This is the day, which the Lord has made.
All:
We will be glad and rejoice in it.
SCRIPTURE
Psalm 8
O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your
foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you
have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that
you care for them?
Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and
honor.
You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet,
all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of
the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
HOMILY
WORD and SONG
Genesis 1:1-2-8
First off, nothing … but God. No light, no time, no substance, no matter. Second off,
God says the word and WHAP! Stuff everywhere! The cosmos in chaos: no shape, no
form, no function - just darkness ... total. And floating above it all, God's Holy Spirit,
ready to play.
Day one: Then God's voice booms out, "Lights!" and, from nowhere, light floods the
skies and "night" is swept off the scene. God gives it the big thumbs up, calls it "day".
Day two: God says, "I want a dome - call it 'sky' - right there between the waters
above and below." And it happens.
Hymn
“When Morning Gilds the Skies”
No. 487 (verses 1&3)
Genesis 1:9-13
Day three: God says, "Too much water! We need something to walk on, a huge lump of
it - call it 'land'. Let the 'sea' lick its edges." God smiles, says, "Now we've got us some definition. But it's too plain! It need, colour! Vegetation! Loads of it. A million shades. Now!"
And the earth goes wild with trees, bushes, plants, flowers and fungi. "Now give it a
growth permit." Seeds appear in every one. "Yesss!" says God.
Anthem
“De Colores”
UCC, No. 402
Genesis 1:14-19
Day four: "We need a schedule: let's have a 'sun' for the day, a 'moon' for the night; I
want 'seasons', 'years'; and give us 'stars', masses of stars - think of a number, add a trillion, then times it by the number of trees and we're getting there: we're talking huge!"
Hymn
“Earth and All Stars”
No. 458 (verse 1)
Genesis 1:20-23
Day five: "OK, animals: amoeba, crustaceans, insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds,
mammals ... I want the whole caboodle teeming with a million varieties of each - and
let's have some fun with the shapes, sizes, colours, textures!" God tells them all, "You've
got a growth permit - use it!" He sits back and smiles, says, "Result!"
Hymn
“All Things Bright and Beautiful”
No. 267
Genesis 1:24-31
Day six: Then God says, "Let's make people - like us, but human, with flesh and blood,
skin and bone. Give them the job of caretakers of the vegetation, game wardens of all
the animals." So God makes people, like God, but human. God makes male and female
(for the "how", see later). God smiles at them and gives them their job description:
"Make babies! Be parents, grandparents, great-grandparents - fill the earth with your
families and run the planet well. You've got all the plants to eat from, so have all the animals - plenty for all. Enjoy." God looks at everything made, and says, "Fantastic. I love it!"
The Genesis 2:1-2:3 texts come the creative interpretation of Rob Lacy, The Word on the Street.

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
Hannah Marion Stanford
Song
“Jesus Loves Me”
Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong;
They are weak, but He is strong.
Refrain:
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me! This I know,
As He loved so long ago,
Taking children on His knee,
Saying, “Let them come to Me.”
Jesus loves me still today,
Walking with me on my way,
Wanting as a friend to give
Light and love to all who live.
Address
One: The sacrament of baptism is an outward and visible sign of the grace of God.
Inasmuch as the promise of the gospel is not only to us but also to our children, baptism with water and the Holy Spirit is the mark of their welcome into the care of
Christ’s church and the sign and seal of their inclusion in the embrace of God’s abundant and merciful love.
All: This is the water of baptism. Out of this water we rise with new life, members of
one body, united in the love of God.
Congregational Assent
Chris Frentrup
One: Jesus calls us to welcome all people as his disciples and to offer anyone who
seeks it the gift of grace in baptism. Do you, who witness and celebrate this sacrament, promise your love, support, and care to the one about to be baptized, as Hannah lives and grows as a disciple of Christ?
All:
We promise our love, support and care.
Prayer of Baptism
One: Peace be with you.
All:
And also with you.
One: Let us pray...
Presentation and Prayer for the Newly Baptized
One: We give you thanks, O Holy One, mother and father of all the faithful, for this your
child and for the grace acknowledged here today through water and the Holy Spirit.
Embrace us all as sons and daughters in the one household of your love and help us to
receive, nurture and befriend Hannah as a member of the body of Christ.
All: We pray that Hannah will have the strength needed for life’s journey, the courage
required in times of suffering, the joy of faith, the freedom of love, and the hope of new
life. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Song
As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good ol' way
And who shall wear the starry crown?
Good Lord show me the way!
O sisters let's go down
Let's go down, come on down
O sisters let's go down
Down in the river to pray
As I went down...
O brothers let's go down…

SONG
“I’ll Fly Away”
Some bright morning when this life is over
I'll fly away
To that home on Gods celestial shore
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, oh glory
I'll fly away in the morning
When I die hallelujah by and by
I'll fly away
When the shadows of this life have gone
I'll fly away
Like a bird from these prison walls I'll fly
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, oh glory
I'll fly away in the morning
When I die hallelujah by and by
I'll fly away
Oh how glad and happy when we meet
I'll fly away
No more cold iron shackles on my feet
I'll fly away
I'll fly away oh glory
I'll fly away in the morning
When I die hallelujah by and by
I'll fly away
I'll fly away oh glory
I'll fly away in the morning
When I die hallelujah by and by
I'll fly away
Just a few more weary days and then
I'll fly away
To a land where joys will never end
I'll fly away
I'll fly away oh glory
I'll fly away in the morning
When I die hallelujah by and by
I'll fly away
I'll fly away

HEARING ASSISTANCE
For those who would like to have worship sound boosted, wireless receivers are available with headphones or
one-ear pieces. We have a new option for those who have hearing aids equipped with a “T” coil. Listeners
hook the loop into their wireless receiver, slip the loop around their neck, and the "T" coil picks up the sound
and amplifies the transmitted sound into the ear. Go to the ushers in the back of the Sanctuary and ask for
either the headphone or loop option.
