Jean Sibelius composed seven symphonies. His
struggle with the eighth symphony lasted for years and
ended with burning the scores.
It’s time to demolish the myth of Jean Sibelius.
These stories are about Sibelius, not about his music.
The commentator is one of the most famous Finnish
composers of our time: Kaija Saariaho. The interviewees
are experts, but not music specialists or scientists.
Each short story uses in its expression codes of
different film genres. Animation replenishes the
narration.
One of the most important
spokesmen for music composed by
Sibelius, British conductor, Sir Colin
Davis, paid a visit to Finland and sat
in Sibelius’ favourite armchair in the
library of the composer’s home, Ainola.
While there, Sir Colin and composer
Osmo Tapio Räihälä stopped to
ponder over what kind of man
Sibelius was and why his music is still
appealing and meaningful today.

The purpose of emissions
trade is to cut down carbon
dioxide emissions, and direct
the industries to invest in
low-carbon production. The
outcome, however, has not been
as expected. The documentary
is a tragicomic story of how we
are trying to save the world by
shifting the emissions from one
place to another. It’s like we’ve
forgotten that we should also
cut down, not just buy and sell.
The story begins in Kenya, where
two businessmen, a Finnish
and an American, are trying to
make business out of emissions
trade. As the carbon market
collapses, the shock waves are
felt everywhere: in Finland, in
Brussels as well as in Kenya.

The adventure begins beyond
the border.
The border between Finland
and Russia is a border between
a small country and the largest
country in the world. It is a
language frontier, a cultural
borderline and a religious divide.
Today it is perhaps the world’s
deepest social divide in which
the expected lifespan of men on
one side of the border can be a
quarter less than those on the
other side.
A documentarian needs
stories and Russian Karelia is full
of them. Life is in many ways
more varied and colourful than
in the dull, combed back and
pressed west. The adventure
begins beyond the border.
