Our lab in Scotland
Our laboratory in Scotland
(Biocity, Block 41, Bo’ness Road,
Newhouse, Lanarkshire, ML1 5UH)
is doing well, with increasing
samples numbers for asbestos
analysis, and more clients using
the site as a drop off/collection
point. Please contact George
Hawthorn (our Account Manager
in Scotland), for more information

Seminar
We are holding an open day and
th
seminar at Biocity on 24
September 2014, covering the
analysis of Contaminated Land
and Water, including asbestos.
Other topics include sampling,
inorganics, VOCs, TPH, PAHs and
SVOCs. The course will include a
buffet lunch and a manual. Please
contact Hazel Davidson to register
or for more information:

In-house collections - routes for our drivers
Currently, we have three vans and drivers who operate the following
routes on a daily basis, as we have recently taken on an additional driver
and acquired another van:

Scotland

Northwest and Yorkshire

Northeast and Cumbria
Our drivers will deliver sample bottles or pick up samples, and take them
to the laboratory the same evening. This service provides the added
reassurance of safe delivery, and is part of the personal service we offer to
our clients.
If you require a collection or delivery, please contact our Customer
Services department on:
O1207 582333 or email [email protected]
Or contact your Account Manager.
If possible, please contact our staff the day before you require the service,
or before 10.00 a.m. on the day. However, we can organize a routine daily
visit, just in case you have any samples.
For other areas of the UK and Ireland, we currently use APC, but each area
is under review regarding the possibility of a local driver.

What’s new in the lab
Bioaccessibility Testing at DETS
We are pleased to announce that DETS is now offering bioaccessibility
testing, both as PBET (Physiologically Based Extraction Test) and the
BARGE method (Bioaccessibility Research Group of Europe).
Bioaccessibility has become increasingly important over the last few
years, as remediation costs become ever more critical, and using
bioaccessible data can save £millions in not having to treat or remove
soil if it is demonstrated that contaminants are not likely to be taken up
by the human body.
It is important to understand the difference between bioaccessible and
bioavailable, as shown in the above diagram:
The bioaccessible fraction of contaminants can be dissolved into
physiological solutions (stomach acid, enzymes, etc) in the gastro
intestinal (GI) tract, and can be mimicked by in vitro laboratory tests.
The bioavailable fraction is the proportion of this fraction which can
pass across the gut membranes and be taken up by the blood system
and circulated to other organs – this is only truly measureable by in vivo
testing.
For more information, please contact our Customer Service staff or your
Account Manager.
Staff
We have taken on several new
staff in the last six months, and
now have well over 100
employees. Most of the new
staff are working in the lab, but
we are pleased to announce the
appointment of our HR
Manager, Lynsey Oni, who will
take over all HR responsibilities
and assist with staff training.
We welcome back Cheryl Cook
(NE Account Manager) from
maternity leave – baby Charlie is
bonny and thriving.
Kit
The new Skalar systems (TOC,
cyanide, phenol) are working
well, and due to a large increase
in TPH analysis, Agilent have
now installed a further two
GCFID systems.
We have commenced a major
reorganization of Sample
Reception/Preparation, and this
will significantly improve
throughput. However, 5 day
turnaround is still standard.

News from the industry
The CIRIA asbestos document ‘Asbestos in soil and made ground: a guide
th
to understanding and managing risks’ was published on 26 March 2014,
and is a very comprehensive document. Areas requiring more work are
being reviewed by the JIWG as part of their production of a Code of
Practice. The SCA is working on an asbestos Blue book method, and also
reviewing the Soil Preparation method. The additional Priority Pollutants
added to the WFD last year are causing some concern with respect to
their reporting limits.
Successful seminar in Reading
We ran a very successful one day seminar at the Holiday Inn near Reading
st
on 21 May – this was attended by almost 40 delegates, and included an
excellent buffet lunch. We covered all the usual topics: Sampling,
Asbestos, Uncertainty, Inorganics, VOCs, PAHs, TPH and leachates. Our
th
next seminar is on 24 September in Scotland (see p. 2), but we intend to
run another one, probably in December, in the North West. Please
contact Hazel Davidson [email protected] for more
information.
