IPC4012 Fault Detector and Remote Terminal Unit IPC4012 is a fault detector for overcurrent and earth faults with integrated remote terminal unit functionality. It has I/O for indications and orders and is therefore suitable for a typical secondary substation. Powerful relays enable direct operation of switching devices. The communication interface is IEC 60870-5-104. Since the algorithm for earth fault detection does not require any voltage measurement, IPC4012 provides cost efficient fault detection and grid automation with high sensitivity for pass-through faults, also in networks where the earth fault currents are low. DATASHEET IPC4012 Fault Detection Other Functions Overcurrent, OC1 and OC2 HMI – User Interface Settings 0.1 – 3.5 × rated CT current, 0.04 – 10 s. Detected overcurrent or earth fault is indicated by diodes and can be reset by a push button, remote control and/or after a pre-defined time. Earth Fault, EF Protrol’s patented Fault Pass Through earth fault detection for all indirectly earthed networks. Capable of detecting high impedance and arcing earth faults. Note that no voltage measurement is necessary for good selectivity at very low currents. The sensitivity is comparable with that of a directional earth fault protective relay. Separate diodes indicate status for power supply, internal supervision and activity of the communication ports. Settings1 0.8 – 300 A, 0.02 – 2 s. The IPC software can be customized with special logic (PLC function) when needed. A non-directional earth fault stage is integrated. 1 The level reflects primary fault current and corresponds to the base ratio 300/1. If current transformers with ratio 150/1 are used, the setting range is 0.4 – 150.0 A. Transient Fault Recorder The built-in transient fault recording function registers currents and events from the last two detected faults, each with a duration of two seconds. It is possible to connect to the service interface to analyze signals and events in detail. Settings and configuration is done in Protrol Tool (Windows XP/Vista/7/8) using the USB-port. Customization Options IPC4012 can be ordered with an auto-reclosing function with one reclose attempt after a set time. Technical Data General Dimensions2: 195 × 105(115) × 64 mm. When a fault occurs in the loop, each IPC unit will send information if the fault has passed (earth fault and overcurrent) to the operations center via remote protocol. The operation engineer can then order disconnection of the faulty segment by sending orders to suitable IPC units. IPC4012 is prepared for automatic fast disconnection in stations equipped with circuit breakers. Fault isolation using load disconnectors must be performed on a dead line. In the station with two outgoing cables (top right), an alternative solution featuring two IPS2 units and a Protrol RTU is demonstrated. Protrol AB, Ullevigatan 19, 411 40 Göteborg Tel: 031-45 82 00.
