IT Mates www.itmates.ie HP Pavilion DV5 DV6 DV7 Graphics Chip fault. In this article, I will describe a problem which is frequently in many HP laptops from DV5, DV6 and DV7 series. After few years, users of these laptops, are suddenly surprised by appearing graphics fault. I will also tell you how to prevent such a fault. In the vast number of cases, regardless of the exact model of the laptop, this vulnerability is manifested in the same way. The common point for all laptops is their series, HP Pavilion DV5, DV6 or DV7. The symptoms are not difficult to interpret, because every time they look the same, also this trouble occurs practically only in laptops with AMD processor. In all HP Pavilion laptops: DV5, DV6 or DV7 this fault will appear in at least one form of the following: – no image on the screen, – you will hear your cooling fan(s) and hard drive but your screen stay „black”, – CAPS-LOCK button on your keyboard will flashing a single LED signal, – no image on the external screen, Generally, LED signal on your keyboard (CAPS-LOCK and NUM-LOCK) indicate the specific error codes, from which we can read messages sent by our computer. Sequency of flashes Suspicious item Terms of error CPU or Northbridge. The processor is not working or failure of Northbridge - in 96% of cases, this code is, however, a failure of Northbridge. BIOS or Northbridge. Fault of BIOS or Northbridge - here approximately 60%, however, is the fault of Northbridge. LEDs blink three times. RAM or CPU. RAM damage or memory controller located in the CPU (in case of AMD CPU). LEDs blink four times. Dedicated graphics card. Most often, the fault dedicated graphics card. LEDs blink five times. Motherboard. Overall fault of motherboard. Possible to diagnose only in the professional computer service. LEDs blink six times. BIOS. Fault of BIOS authentication. LEDs blink one time. In a large number of cases, (service statistics - about 96%), the blame for this failure bears on Northbridge of AMD-ATI company, which also in some laptops serves as an integrated graphics card Radeon HD 3200. The bridge is most likely to occur under the code names: – RADEON IGP 216-0674026, – RADEON IGP 216-0752001, – RADEON IGP 216-0772034, – RADEON IGP 215-0752007, The presence of the bridge model depends, on whether the laptop only has integrated graphics card (Radeon HD3200), or additional dedicated graphics card. However, regardless of the laptop design, and the function of this bridge, the failure is always present, on at least one of the above methods. The only effective repair of this fault in the laptop HP Pavilion DV5, DV6 and DV7 is the replacement of damaged bridge on brand new. Can I replace the bridge itself? Replacing of Northbridge is a complex operation, that requires having specialized tools to repair electronics and extensive knowledge and experience in this topic. Northbridge is a system in a BGA (definition of BGA), so its replacement is virtually unenforceable in home conditions. In this case it is best to take the matter in the hands of experts with relevant technical background, knowledge and experience. Remember that the only effective method of repairing the fault is replacing on the new. If someone suggests a repair by other treatments, such as, for example, reballing, heating, reflow, etc. do not get tricked! This is only a temporary repair method, which can of course works for very long time or only for few months. 4. What you can do to prevent this fault? To prevent such a fault you must remember that your computer is like a car. You need send it for a service every year. Otherwise it will stop working, soon or later...
