Goddamn this War!
Varlot Soldat - by Jacques Tardi, Didier Daeninckx is
a bleak, black and white BD which tells of the second
battle of Aisnes or La bataille du Chemin des Dames
27 April 1917. Three French soldiers were summarily
court marshalled and shot for
refusing to fight - the black and
white drawings perfectly mirror
Vardot’s feelings of despair in
the aftermath. The horror of the
trenches and the field hospitals
is more palpable with these
evocative sketches than any
photograph. The text is relatively
simple and thus accessible to
young adults.

First published in 1999 it has become a modern classic.
