Goddamn this War! Varlot Soldat - by Jacques Tardi, Didier Daeninckx is a bleak, black and white BD which tells of the second battle of Aisnes or La bataille du Chemin des Dames 27 April 1917. Three French soldiers were summarily court marshalled and shot for refusing to fight - the black and white drawings perfectly mirror Vardot’s feelings of despair in the aftermath. The horror of the trenches and the field hospitals is more palpable with these evocative sketches than any photograph. The text is relatively simple and thus accessible to young adults.
