St. Paul’s has a commitment to discovering, nurturing and promoting new talent. For many years,
the Lunchtime Concert series has given opportunities to young musicians to perform in a
professional environment in central Bedford to an appreciative audience.
The concerts run from approximately 1.10 pm – 1.40 pm. Lunches are available from midday and
you are welcome to eat your lunch during the concert.
The concerts are free and no ticket is required. However, the musicians perform here for no fee.
Suggested donations of £3 would be greatly appreciated which will contribute towards the work of
St. Paul’s and other charities.

The D-Day Darlings Sing 'The Songs That Won the War'

Set in 1939, in the heart of wartime Britain, this show features “The D-Day Darlings”, a vocalharmony trio and “Mr. John Adams”, an actor/director and soldier of war.
The story is pieced together with a plethora of the most popular and beautiful music of the 1940’s
wartime era featuring songs by Vera Lynn, Gracie Fields, Bing Crosby, The Andrew Sisters, Frank
Sinatra and more. With a series of authentic costume changes to add that authentic 40’s glamour
and a dazzling back drop of original film footage from the era, the show brings the spirit of wartime
Britain alive and brings back fond memories for all.

Bad Manners

Bad Manners are returning to Bedford Corn Exchange for a night of full on Ska antics! The band
quickly became the novelty favourites of the Ska movement through their bald, enormous-bodied
frontman's on-stage antics, earning early exposure through their Top of The Pops TV exploits and
an appearance in the live film documentary, Dance Craze.
Bad Manners were at their peak most popular during the late 1970s and early 1980s, during a
period when other ska revival bands, such as Madness and The Specials, The Beat and The Selecter,
filled the charts. Bad Manners spent 111 weeks in the UK Singles Chart between 1980 and 1983 and
have continued as a worldwide popular touring live act to this day.
Some of Bad Manners' more notable hits include "My Girl Lollipop", "Lip Up Fatty", "Ne Ne Na Na
Na Na Nu Nu", "Lorraine", "Just A Feeling", "Walking In The Sunshine", "Can Can" and "Special
Brew". One of the main reasons for their notoriety was their outlandish huge-tongued and shavenheaded frontman, Buster Bloodvessel. His manic exploits got them banned from the British BBC
TV chart show Top of the Pops and they were also banned from Italian TV after Bloodvessel
mooned a concert audience, after being told that the Pope was watching on TV!

The ecstatic virtuosity of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.3 meets the sweeping grandeur of
Vaughan Williams’s Fifth Symphony, all led by the celebrated British conductor, Martyn Brabbins.
Vaughan Williams’s symphony began its life as an orchestral version of his as yet unfinished opera,
Pilgrim’s Progress. However, the end result moved away from anything directly programmatic and
instead became a work of shifting harmonies, plaintive horn-calls and quiet melodic beauty – a
welcome respite to the destruction of World War II that otherwise surrounded the symphony’s
creation.

Three masterpieces from the last 20 years of the 19th Century. The concert opens joyously with
the overture to Humperdinck’s delightful opera Hansel and Gretel and then moves serenely on to
Brahms. Excitement grows as we anticipate the performance by Marina Nadirazde of his second
Piano Concerto – a majestic work full of energy and virtuosity alternating with gentleness and
beauty. The slow movement in particular is embellished by the gorgeous cello solo with which it
starts and ends. Finally to Elgar and to the work that brought his name to the international stage –
the Enigma Variations. Full of imaginative musical pictures of his friends, this is music to enjoy hugely
and a fitting end to a glorious programme.
