RMR Mountain Series # 2 Tournament Guide
February 8, 2015
Welcome to the only RMR sanctioned 14 and under tournament series in Western Colorado! Mesa Juniors
Volleyball Company is proud to host this event series. We are committed to providing a nurturing and
competitive environment for our youth volleyball players and look forward to seeing them play for years to
come.
Sportsmanship and Code of Conduct
Mesa Juniors Volleyball Company and USA-Volleyball are committed to providing a positive sporting environment during this
event. All participants, coaches and spectators will be held to behaviors in accordance with the attached Code of Conduct which
will also be posted at the site. This is a sanctioned event and therefore your participation or presence may be revoked at any time.
We expect your cooperation in creating a learning environment for our players, coaches, officials, line judges and scorers.
Site
Colorado Mesa University will be the primary competition site for the RMR Mountain Series tournaments. Central High School,
Palisade High School, Fruita High School and Fruita 8/9 School will provide the extra courts that we need to accomodate the
growth of the RMR Mountain Series. There is no need to change facilities during the day, however, so grab a seat, get
comfortable and cheer for your team! For RMR Mountain Series # 2 Pools A, B, C, D, E and F will be at Colorado Mesa University
(1100 North Avenue, Grand Junction, CO 81501). Pools G and H will play at Palisade High School (3679 G Road, Palisade, CO
81526).
Site Rules
Colorado Mesa University and the local high schools are the premiere sites in Grand Junction to host volleyball tournaments. We
ask that you respect the rules of the facilities so we can continue to have great venues for competition.
- Please refrain from bringing food and drinks (other than water) into the gyms.
- Please be conscientious to dispose of your trash properly.
- Coolers will need to be stored outside the gym and clear of the walkways.
- Bleachers that are in the folded position may not be used as seats.
- Fold up chairs will only be allowed when bleachers are not provided.
- Ball handling should only be performed in the gym (not in the hallways).
- Use of the elevators at CMU is reserved exclusively for people with disabilities.
Parking
On Sundays, you may park in any lot at Colorado Mesa University or our other sites listed above.
Hospitality Room/Concessions
Due to regulations from the university, Colorado Mesa University will be providing concessions for teams playing at that location.
A Hospitality Room for coaches will be stocked with breakfast items, lunch items as well as snacks and drinks throughout the day
at both sites.
Tournament Schedule/Format
The tournament will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday. There will be a coaches meeting at each site at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday
(coaches must bring photo ID's with them to the meeting). All 14's and 13's teams (pools A-F) will compete in a four team pool
and will play the best two out of three sets rally scoring. Sets one and two will be scored to 25 (cap of 27) with a third set, if
necessary, rally scoring to 15 (cap of 17). After the completion of pool play, teams will participate in one cross over match to end
the day. All cross over matches will be the best two out of three sets rally scoring. Sets one and two will be scored to 25 (cap of 27)
with a third set, if necessary, rally scoring to 15 (no cap). All 12's (pools G and H) will play on 7-foot nets with volley lites. They will play
Maxi Scoring two sets to 15 (cap of 17) and will not play a deciding set (see below for a description of the Maxi Scoring format) nor
will there be any cross bracket matches for these pools.
The tournament schedule and results will be posted on site for reference, but tournament packets will not be available, so be sure
to print yours ahead of time if you would like your own copy. Awards will be given at this tournament for the winners of 1 vs. 1 AC, B-D and E-F crossover matches as well as the winners of pool G and pool H. Ties will be broken per the guidelines issued by USA
Volleyball-RMR. If two teams have the same match record, the tie will be broken by head to head result in pool. If three teams
have the same match record, the tie will be broken and the teams will be seeded by set percentage followed by total point
differential.
differential.
Officiating/Scorekeeping
Each team will need to provide a USAV certified first official (R1) and scorer. Additionally, each team will need two lines judges, a
down official (R2), a libero tracker and a flip scorekeeper. It is the responsibility of the officiating team to keep the warm up time
to 10 minutes.
Match Schedule and Warm Ups
Matches will begin 10 minutes after the conclusion of the previous match. The warm up will be a 2-4-4 format. Two minutes of
shared court time, 4 minutes for the serving team, 4 minutes for the receiving team.
"Maxi Scoring is a system endorsed by USA Volleyball for beginning level volleyball players to promote rallys and more contac ts in
the match. The bridge to having a serve error/ace game –with no rallies - happening at the beginning levels of our sport means we
ask you to also teach and develop rallies. This version is not age based, but experienced base – once the teams can pass real serves
regularly, shift to regular scoring.
Maxivolley is where the game scoring is changed: each point on the scoreboard is comprised of three parts – 1. The serve, by
the team who earned the last point; 2. An off court tossed ball to the receiving team, which has three hits remaining; 3. A tossed
ball to the serving team, which also has three hits remaining. Each of these result in a small point being scored, and after the rally
ends, one team certainly will have two little points to the other team’s one little point, and that team gets the big point on the
scoreboard. [If one team wins the first two points, they will immediately be awarded the big point]. The core idea is to bring the
VOLLEY back to these games, rather than the current serve-ace/serve-err version normally played. We need to learn to serve and
serve receive, but we also need to learn the second and third contacts, not just have aces and service errors. Maxivolley bri ngs this
into the game.
Due to serving success overpowering the serve reception success, some nations and programs have a rule, if they do not follow
the Maxivolley option, that after about 5 serves, the team must rotate in a new server, to stop this serving domination."
Tournament Series T-Shirts
Long sleeve tournament series t-shirts will be for sale at the tournament desk for $20. The shirts will have the RMR Mountain
Series logo on the front. If we do not have your size available at the tournament, we will accept pre-orders and you can pick up
your shirt at the next tournament. If you pre-orderd a shirt at RMR #1 it will be available at the tournament desk at your site.
