In spite of all the rhetoric about the poor, negative image associated with career and technical education and the critical need for student recognition, no national initiative existed. Over the years, educators have seen the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) at work, advancing excellence in career and technical education, and raising the bar for student achievement. They have witnessed the Society build a strong, positive image in their local community and have seen the difference NTHS has made for their students and programs. Today, the Society serves thousands of member schools and honors more individuals for their achievement and leadership every year. Alpha Beta Gamma International Business Honor Society (Business) Alpha Beta Gamma is an International Business Honor Society established by business professors in 1970 to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year business and professional college students. The society is a member of The Association of College Honor Societies and has initiated 65,500 members. National Federation of Licensed Practical Nurses Student Honor Society (Practical Nursing) The National Federation of Licensed Practical Nurses (NFLPN) is the professional organization for licensed practical nurses and Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN) and practical/vocational nursing students in the United States. NFLPN was founded in the state of New York in 1949 to provide a structure at the national level through which LPNs and LVNs could promote better patient care and to speak and act on behalf of the occupational group. It is the only organization in the United States governed entirely by LPNs and LVNs for LPNs and LVNs. NFLPN is recognized by the other national nursing organizations as the official voice of LPNs and LVNs. The mission of the NFLPN is to foster high standards of nursing care and promote continued competence through education/ certification and lifelong learning with a focus on public protection. The NFLPN is committed to quality and professionalism in the delivery of nursing care working with other organizations and groups in a cooperative progressive spirit to build strong professional and public relationships. Nichole Eglian, RN, LPN, is the founder of the NFLPN Student Honor Society which began in 2003. To date, NFLPN has recognized over 3,500 practical nursing students across the country for exemplary academic achievements. Gamma Beta Phi Society (Academic and Community Service) The Gamma Beta Phi Society was chartered on March 22, 1964, in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Created by a group of Southern college educators, it grew out of the high school Beta Club and Dr. John W. Harris, founder of that organization, served as the Society’s Executive Secretary for its first decade. Today, Gamma Beta Phi has chapters all across the United States. It regularly inducts thousands of academically excellent students who share its mission of promoting education and providing community service to their colleges and communities. The Society has made a major impact all across America. In recent years, Gamma Beta Phi has collected thousands of books for St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 6000 pairs of shoes for citizens of Iraq, thousands of hats for the Heavenly Hats Foundation, thousands of letters to the service men and woman aboard the USS Kitty Hawk, and bought an Ark for Heifer International. The Society’s list of accomplishments is long and impressive. Currently, there are approximately 40,000 active student members of Gamma Beta Phi, and their numbers and commitment to the Society’s ideals continue to grow.
