Jan. 28: More than a few Colonial Valley Conference coaches feel Robbinsville, Hightstown and
Nottingham are the three teams with the best shot to unseat Hopewell Valley as champion at this
weekend’s Mercer County Tournament.
Two of those teams did battle tonight, with the Ravens taking a 34-30 win over the Northstars in the
Swamp.
“Heading into tonight’s meet we knew they had a good team and that we would need to be at the top
of our game to have a shot at a victory,” assistant coach Jim “The Boulder” Becker said.
“Unfortunately, the relative inexperience of our team kept us from wrestling at our highest potential and
we lost a close match.”
The tilt started at 106 pounds and Robbinsville’s Sean Tonry clinched the victory with a come-frombehind, 6-3 win over Kemberly Montina at 182. The Northstars (10-3) had just 12 points up to that
point but made it close when Fabian Mora and Richard Vincent sandwiched pins around Devion
Stokes’ forfeit victory.
Zach Grehan had a pin at 170 for Nottingham, while Daniel Dempsey and Sean Houck won decisions.
“Crucial mental lapses occurred at the worst time,” Becker said. “We stressed in our pre-match
meeting that we could not afford to give up pins and expect to win.
“Several of our wrestlers gave up major decisions or tech falls rather than pins but other wrestlers who
we expected to be in competitive matches not only lost but were pinned, giving Robbinsville additional
bonus points. Whether it was the long layoff due to weather cancellations or just the long grind of the
wrestling season, we definitely picked a bad time to have a sub-par effort.”
The loss puts Nottingham in a tie for first place in the Valley Division with Hightstown, which it
defeated last week.
