Kent Valley PeeWee “B” Storm Shutout South Delta
PeeWee C5 Storm 4 to 0 in Canadian Exhibition
Story contributed by Ellen Shelden
South Delta Recreation Centre, So. Delta, BC. January 24, 2015 – Coach Jeff
Ferguson took his KVHA Storm team on their first road trip over the border to Canada for a
weekend of exhibition games against our neighbors to the North. During their first
Canadian game of the season, the KVHA Storm were hoping to come away with some BIG
“W’s” as their first opponent would be the SDMHA Storm C5 at the South Delta Recreation
Centre on Saturday, January 24th for an evening thriller. Well this game didn’t disappoint as
the team captured their first Canadian win by a remarkable shut-out score of 4-0!
Impressive, eh?
Period 1 - With 2 “Storm” teams competing, the KVHA team was hoping to ‘churn it up’
and start things off in their favor. And boy did it as the U.S. team just stunned the HUGE
Canadians with a quick wrap-around goal right out of the gates from Steven Rosenquist,
assisted by Sean Smith. That and another one that followed only minutes later by Caleb
Chaloner, with the assist by Tyler Sherwood, simply stunned the South Delta team as they
did their best to defend against a strong Kent Valley counterpart. Throughout the period, it
was evident that the KVHA players were working well together getting into position and
vying for the puck. Consequently, South Delta had a difficult time gaining the upper-hand
and with the roar of the visiting crowd cheering them on, the KVHA Storm were able to hold
this lead to close the period and make a formidable impact on their opponent.
Period 2 - The 2nd period was highlighted with a spectacular display of concentration
peppered with a telltale sign of hard work and tenacity in preparation for this impressive
Northern duel. As both teams fought hard for possession of the puck, the KVHA Storm
would lead the battle with another stunning goal. This time, a bouncing puck through the
‘five-hole’ of the SDMHA’s goalie by Jake Ferguson, assisted by Steven Rosenquist.
Awesome play, Jake! As the period progressed, the Storm players showed great progressive
growth with their strong defensive skills and puck handling – resulting in extending their
lead to 3-0 as the buzzer sounded.
Period 3 - The passionate battle for possession came to a culminating end in the 3rd
period. Halfway through the period, the Storm would score their final goal when Maxwell
Mudge would net a sweet slapshot rocket that sailed over the goalie’s glove into the top
corner of the net, assisted by Caleb Chaloner & Johnny Singer. Nice missile-shot, Max! In
the end, it was pure grit and determination, plus a measure of exceptional teamwork, which
saw the Storm through the period to win in style against the SDMHA Storm team! Great
work, boys!
Summary - Ultimately, the KVHA Storm won a great one to get things started against a
strong SDMHA Storm team in exhibition play on Saturday by a final score of 4 to 0. KVHA
goalie Gabriel Poyer had a dazzling performance & got “high fives” for his outstanding effort
in saving 12 out of 12 shots in the net to earn his first shut-out as a Storm player!
Spectacular job, Gabe! At the end of the game, it was a kind gesture that each KVHA player
was awarded a token of appreciation (a hat) after the match. Hopefully as the weekend
plays on, we will see continued improvement in the Storm’s skills and more “W’s” to follow.
Next up, the Storm face the SDMHA Spartans C2 team for their second exhibition game.
Good luck, Storm!

Kent Valley PeeWee “B” Storm Tops South Delta Spartans
C2 6 to 1
Story contributed by Ellen Shelden
Ladner Leisure Centre, So. Delta, BC. January 25, 2015 – On a rare occasion, the
KVHA Storm team didn’t have an early-morning ice-breaker to play. Instead, as the
afternoon came on Sunday, January 25th, the KVHA Storm went up against another South
Delta team – this time, the SDMHA Spartans C2 at the Ladner Leisure Centre in Canada.
With 1 game already under their belt, the Storm were eager to get another “W”! That
motivation was the key as the Storm churned it up and rallied with a relentless attack to
snap another spectacular win! Great teamwork, Tornadoes!
Period 1 - The KVHA Storm went toe-to-toe during the 1st period against a strong South
Delta Spartans team. In hopes of a repeat performance of the previous game’s outcome,
the Storm took to the ice with a fierce competitiveness and intensity that was almost
palatable. In a beautifully orchestrated play that can be seen right out of the coach’s play
book, the Storm took the early lead with their first goal on a short-handed stunner from
Maxwell Mudge. Way to get the momentum going, Max!
As the period progressed, both teams worked hard to gain possession of the puck.
Fortunately, the Tornadoes would sustain this lead as the buzzer sounded the end of the
period.
Period 2 - The 2nd period started off like the first: fast and furious. It was a vicious storm
the KVHA team was brewing as they tried to blow the Spartans off the ice with successive
shots on goal. The Spartans’ goalie did his best to fend off multiple shots – but was no
match for the impending storm that was about to come. The first shot was a stupendous
beauty to net by Jake Ferguson, with an assist by Steven Rosenquist. Nice shot, Jake! Just
minutes later, Jake Ferguson would score his second goal of the night, assisted by Sean
Smith. Great teamwork, boys! As if they were playing a game of “Keep Away”, no other
goals were scored for the rest of the period by either team and the Storm would keep their
lead going into the next period.
Period 3 - As the final period opened, the Storm wouldn’t let up against the South Delta
Spartans team and continued to pummel the Spartans’ goalie with SOGs. With just over two
minutes into the period, Steven Rosenquist would control a marvelous pass and score,
assisted by Sean Smith. And they weren’t done yet……..when minutes later, Jake Ferguson
would score his third goal of the night, earning his first Hat Trick of the season on an assist
from Steven Rosenquist! Great offensive maneuvers, boys! Unfortunately, the Storm let up
a bit allowing the Spartans to get on the scoreboard with their one and only goal of the
game. And as if that wasn’t enough, with just a few minutes left on the clock, Sean Smith
would seal the deal with one last goal, assisted by Jake Ferguson. Way to keep the pressure
up, boys!
Summary - As a result, the exciting outcome of this exhibition game favored the KVHA
Storm, who played a resilient SDMHA Spartans team in exhibition play on Sunday that
resulted in a stunning win with a final score of 6 to 1. The Spartans fired 10 shots on the
Storm’s goal while the Storm put an impressive 37 shots on the Spartans’ net. Storm goalie
Gabriel Poyer had a solid performance saving 9 out of 10 shots for a 90% save rate in the
net. Stunning job, Gabe! At the end of the game, it was a kind gesture that each KVHA
player was awarded a token of appreciation (a shirt) after the match. A lot can be said
about the positive growth and developmental maturity seen in the Storm players so far this
season. Congratulations to both teams on a very exciting and entertaining game! Hopefully
their next game back in the States will keep them on a great path of success! Good luck,
Storm!

Kent Valley Tornadoes Edge Hurricanes 1 to 0 in “Battle of
the Valley”
Kent Valley Ice Centre, Kent, WA. January 24, 2015 – Kent Valley’s Bantam Tornadoes
edged the Kent Valley Bantam Hurricanes 1 to 0 in the latest edition of the “Battle of the
Valley!” It was as even as any game can get. The two teams played even until 2:46
remaining to play in the third period when the Tornadoes’ Cole Best scored the game’s only
goal off an assist from Lane Eriks. Shots on goal were even at 20 each. Penalties were
close to even as the Hurricanes took one more penalty than the Tornadoes. It doesn’t get
any closer than this. Up until the closing three minutes of the game it looked like neither
team would win.
Among other things the game was a battle of the goalies with each goal tender facing 20
shots. The Tornadoes’ Tyler Roberts edged out the Hurricanes’ Ben Fredell by just one save
to earn the coveted shutout and the win. Fredell was near flawless in net for the Hurricanes
as he turned away 19 of 20 shots on goals for an impressive 95% save rate. What a game!
