Jim Schmidt gave the thought
today, one credited to Sir
Francis Bacon, historical figure
of empiricism and essays:
"Imagination was given to man
to compensate him for what
he is not; a sense of humor to
console him for what he is.”

The Meeting
Our program today was
the Chair of the Rotarian
Foundation of Livermore
(RFL), past President of our
club and standout football star
at Stanford, Chuck Hartwig.
Photographic evidence based
on a Wheaties breakfast
cereal box, found by Marty
Plone, made it evident that the
gridiron prowess of Charles
Hartwig dates back to 1934
when he was a collegiate allamerican guard at Pittsburgh
(Don Hutson was that year an
all-American end).

annually. The LRF
was started by our
club in 1987, when Marty
Plone was our club president,
as a means of tax exempt
contributions to local needs,
notable you, service, and the
creation of opportunities,
as expressed by the words
“Building the future here
today”. A few years later the
Morning Club joined, and now
the two clubs run this; The
two club presidents, Millie
from our club and Charles
Crohare from the Morning
Club, are on the board of
directors, which includes
Carol Howell, Al Lewis, Dave
Greiner, Lori Souza and Beth
Cassidy from our club.
The RFL has now a corpus
in excess of one million
dollars, a goal that was set
at the outset. This has been
built
from
contributions
from individual Rotarians,
corporations and bequests
as well as fund-raisers. The
major fundraiser this year is
the Bella Rosa Ball, co-chaired
by Sblend Sblendorio of our
club and Nadine Horner of the

the Axis Community Health
Center (not to be confused with
the Axis Powers against which
our country and many others
fought in World War II.)
Amongst the many local
charities that have received
assistance, typically in grants of
$5K to $7K, are the Dictionary
Project headed by Carol Howell,
that gives a dictionary to every
Livermore third grader, and
the Holiday Party chaired by
Kathy Coyle. The RFL is also
supporting the Bandstand, to
be erected in Carnegie Park.
Dennis Gambs is the chair, Steve
Neef the Architect, and Mike
Thompson is organizing the
fundraising, which will include
opportunities to purchase name
plaques.
The RFL had, a few years ago,
purchase a mobile health unit
which it gave to Valley Care
Hospital. The annual cost of
maintaining that, some $200K,
is beyond the means of Valley
Care now, and Al Lewis is
looking at what the next step
should be.
Local Rotarians involved in the
administration and operation
of the RFL include Dave Greiner
(the donor program and
financial management), Lori
Souza (bylaws) and Kathy Coyle
(web site), and Beth Cassidy

THE SPUR
(financial management). The
foundation has hired Rosso
Accounting Service.
The foundation has funded
some 766 grants. In 2014
they gave $58K in grants
that included Hoofprints on
the Hear, Reins in Motion,
childhood abuse intervention,
Open Heart kitchen, LHS
band uniforms and Livermore
Opera student outreach.
Beth Cassidy is chair for the
awards in 2015, which will
amount to $70K. Again there
will be support for Open Heart
Kitchen, Reins in Motion,
Axis, CALICO, and various
schools projects including
STEM,
underprivileged
assistance and purchase of
musical instruments.
The RFL has returned $1M to
our community, establishing
a record of which we can be
very proud.
I believe that once again Sam
Steele won the raffle.
