Some fast consumption related facts about Valentine’s Day: - Around a billion valentines are sent each year globally, making the day the second largest cardsending holiday of the year behind Christmas. - Twenty-five percent of all seasonal cards annually are valentines. - Over 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold each year. - Valentine’s Day is the top holiday for fresh flower purchases with red roses being most popular. - Ten percent of engagements happen on Valentine’s Day. Those statistics come from the American Greetings Corporation. Valentine’s Day is big business and as such has the potential to have substantial impact on the environment. For example, the one billion cards laid end to end would stretch around the world five times! That’s a lot of trees. Valentine’s Day gifts with the planet in mind If Valentine’s Day is an important day for you or the one you love, then you can also show a bit of extra love for the environment by carefully considering what you buy. Here are some ideas: - Cards made from recycled or tree-free paper (this will be indicated on the card) - Consider sending an e-card instead, using one of the many quality services around. - Fair-trade and/or organic chocolate - Choose organic and/or locally grown flowers. - Make a donation to an environmental organization on behalf of the person. - If you wish to give jewelry, consider pre-owned or purchasing from jewelers who are certified to be sourcing precious metals and gemstones in an ecologically and socially respon- Soup Sunday—RE Fundraiser on February 8th! A suggested donation of $5 per person will go towards the social outreach activities of the children of the congregation. The effort you put in will be sure to impress! - Book a retreat in a wildlife reserve, park or natural area. Your business will help support the running of such establishments. - Give natural perfumes and fragrances. Popular mainstream fragrances are chemical cocktails. By buying natural fragrances, you’ll be showing you not only care for the environment, but the person’s health. UU Valentines from UU Media Works on Facebook Creative by Tim Atkins & Jessica Ferguson Graphic Design by Jessica Ferguson New Member Orientation Class The long-awaited new member orientation class — required for membership in UUCE — is tentatively set for the first three Sundays in March —March 1, 8, and 15 — from 12:30 to 2:30 pm at the church. It was necessary to schedule the classes this far ahead so that materials for each participant can be ordered and received by class time. Lunch, which will be provided by UUCE’s Congregational Life Committee, will be served between the church service THE COMPASS and class time. Child care will be provided for class participants if needed. Those planning to attend the series of classes are requested to sign up as soon as possible on the sign-up sheet in the church foyer so that the correct number of materials can be provided.
