PASTOR’S PONDERINGS….
What is Faith?!?
The dictionary.com defines faith as
(1) confidence or trust in person or thing;
(2) belief that is not based on proof;
(3) belief in God or in the doctrines or teachings
of religion.
How do you define faith? Or how do you experience faith in the world around you? CJ in his sermon on Sunday will be exploring faith. Do you
see your faith as something that challenges you
or do you see faith as a comfort? These are
questions that need to be explored in each of our
lives.
As we prepare for Lent starting on Feb. 18th, the
journey to the Cross is all about faith, belief &
love. During this Lenten journey we will be exploring Biblical faith in writings & the people. Many of us proclaim the faith of our parents
& grandparents until an experience shakes our
foundation to its core.
Then the first question is “Where is God?”! The
doubt in those moments takes over & we struggle
to find balance. I believe in those moments God
is more present to us than we know or want to
see. It is easier to say, “God has left the building”.
Rev. Laura Norris-Buisch
For our struggle is knowing God is here even
when we are not able to explain our tragedy &
pain or the tragedies in our world. We humans
always want to explain away the moments of our
lives; especially if we can put them into neat &
concise boxes. Faith & life are not easily captured because sometimes they are matters of the
heart not the mind.
My friends, as we enter this journey of Lenten
discipline, may we live in the ambiguities of our
lives with faith & love in God.
Peace,
Laura

RIVERSIDE’S FINANCES AT A GLANCE
Lectionary Scripture Readings … February
February 1, 2015
The church’s financial state is not easy to evaluate, because
Income and Expense are so variable. Heating bills rise in the
winter, Mission donations are usually made at the end of the
year, and Properties costs can appear unexpectedly. The General Offering is probably the most dependable measure of the
Church’s financial health.

Sunday School News...
Our Christmas Children’s Pageant this year
was once again, very entertaining!
I’d like to thank Barbara Rodgers for
volunteering to be our “Older, Wiser Mary”
and also Joe Falcone for stepping in to be
one of our “Wise Men”. This definitely put an added
ingredient to the mix! And, of course, our children that
work so hard every year to make the Pageant a success!
During the month of February the Deacons will be sponsoring
a different kind of mission for Casey House.
In fact, we are challenging everyone in the congregation
to participate and GIVE FROM THE HEART!

Posters (designed by Emily Kernin) will be displayed
to keep track of which age group that donates the most!
June 7th - LAST DAY OF SUNDAY SCHOOL

(outside weather permitting)
The real winners will be our less fortunate neighbors
who will be able to use these items.
Any questions or concerns regarding Sunday School,
always feel free to ask C.J. Tripi or Heather Stackpole!
REMINDER:
If you do not have mission envelopes,

The season of LENT
begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2015
PARENTS MORNING OUT !!!
Lead by Rev. Laura/Linda Johnson
"Lent is often associated with 'giving up' certain habits or pleasures, a time of doing something extra so that we are conscious of
the suffering of Jesus, and prepared to celebrate the new life of
resurrection.
Saturday, February 28th
Drop your children off ~ 9:00PM
"Jesus did not know about Lent. Jesus knew about discipleship.
Almsgiving, prayer, and fasting--these were not 'extras' in the
spiritual life. Giving, praying and fasting were to be the normal
patterns of life for those he called and who chose to follow him....
Pick them up by ~ 12:00PM
Activities, Snacks, Movies
FREE babysitting will be available!!!
GATHERING OF FRIENDS...
"We are among those called by Jesus. Our Lenten practices
might indeed be a bit more pronounced than at other times of the
year, but our lives throughout the year are to be shaped by habits
of faith Jesus learned in his own religious upbringing.
will meet Friday, February 27th
at 12 noon in the dining room.
"What habits am I creating that will focus my life to follow the footsteps of Jesus?"
Cackie Upchurch, in "A Year of Sundays:
PLEASE R.S.V.P
Gospel Reflections 2007"
Bring your own lunch.
Beverages and dessert will be served.
What is Ash Wednesday? Is it really Presbyterian?
You’re welcome to bring a friend!
Although Ash Wednesday has not been very important for many
Presbyterians until recent decades, it’s as “Presbyterian” as repentance, confession, and pardon. Presbyterians and others have
begun to recover Ash Wednesday in recent years, discovering in
it powerful symbols that have helped to lead us into the spiritual
disciplines of Lent. Traditionally the palms that we waved on Palm
Sunday are burned to ashes and brought out for use on Ash
Wednesday. On that day, a minister, elder, or other marks our
foreheads with a cross-shaped sign, saying, “You are dust, and to
dust you shall return,” from Gen. 3:19. The ashes remind us of
our mortality, the brevity of life, and our need for confession and
pardon. At the same time, because the sign on our foreheads is
cross-shaped, it’s meant to remind us of our baptism. We who
have died to Christ will be raised with him. So the ultimate point of
Ash Wednesday is to face up to some hard realities, buoyed by
our confident hope in the One who raised Jesus from the dead
and who will have the last word over our lives, too.
If you like to play Euchre, Canasta
or Mexican Dominos this is for YOU!
If you don’t know how… come! We’ll teach you!
Leave your troubles behind at home
and let’s get together and enjoy!
Hope to see you there!

NEWS FROM THE RIVERSIDE WORKERS…
Lee Tweedie, President
The Riverside Workers are a group of women who work for the church. We have been
called on many times to help out. This group was formed many years ago, as a group
was needed. Through the years we have worked hard and our group is slowly giving
away to age. We need your help and input to keep us going. We are NOT all Bazaar
and crafts.
The Bakeless Bake sale to benefit the Scholarship Fund will be held on three Sundays in February. Those being the 8th, 15th and the 22nd. This is a bake sale where no
one has to bake. What could be easier, no work. Just donate the cost of the items
on what you would have spent baking and what you would have spent buying some of
the delicious items that would have been donated. We may have 7 applicants for scholarship this year. Help a good cause.
Plans are still under discussion concerning the bazaar this coming year. We need some
young blood to help out, especially in clean up. Will keep you posted.
Our next meeting will be held on the 10th of February at 10am. Lots of things going
on. Please consider joining us. Bring your lunch and we will furnish the beverage and the
dessert. See you then.
