Title Vll/Huchoosedah Newsletter Native American Education Services October 2014 Welcome to the 2014-2015 School Year. We welcome all Native American and Alaskan Native Students and their families to the Seattle Public Schools. This newsletter is to provide you with information on the SPS Title Vll Native Education Program, our staff, and our calendar of events for the upcoming school year. Dear Students, Families, and Community, I hope all of you are enjoying the beautiful weather we have had lately! And I hope you have had a great start to your new school year. All of the teachers here; Janine, Vicki, and Jenny have been busy visiting schools and meeting building leaders. We have had a very positive response to our visits in the school and are very positive about this school year. We had our back to school supply distribution; we had a decent amount of people show up, however we still have supplies left. We know with schools giving out supplies more families don’t need them as much, but if your children didn’t get any please contact us, we would like to be able to help you. Our Next PAC Meeting will be October 9, 2014, 6:00 – 7:30, location TBD, we will know by the end of September, we will hold our PAC elections for all positions except for secretary! In an astounding victory the SPS Board passed a resolution to observe Indigenous Peoples Day, on the second Monday of October. In an effort to support The Seattle Human Rights Commission and Matt Remle, we submitted to the school board a resolution that fully restates our commitment to observing IPD. The City of Seattle will vote October 6th, 2014. Staff from Curriculum & Instruction, Native American Education, School & Family Partnerships and Race & Equity, General Counsel’s Office and the Board Office worked together to draft the resolution before you, and recommend that Policy 2336 be amended to add Indigenous Peoples’ Day to the list of Required Observances. http://www.seattleschools.org/modules/groups/homepagefiles/cms/1583136/File/Departmental%20 Content/school%20board/1415%20agendas/091714agenda/20140917_Resolution_IndigenousPeoples.pdf Quick Update PAC meeting John Stanford, October 9, 2014, 6:00-7:30 PM, room 2010 8th Annual Eastside Native American Veteran’s Powwow, Oct 11, 2014, Grand Entry 6:00PM, Juanita High School 10601 NE 132nd St, Kirkland WA, see attached flier Tribal Language Circles, UNEA/Clear Sky, Tuesday-Thursday Wilson/Pacific 6:00-8:30 United Indians Of All Tribes is Hiring, please see attachments Link to the SPS Native Education Program Huchoosedah Fusion Page http://nativeed.www.seattleschools.org This page is updated monthly and contains calendar information and links to other Native Organizations Links to Native American and Alaskan Native Organizations Calendar of Events 2014 Event Calendar October 9, 2014, 6:00-630 PAC Meeting John Stanford Room 2010 2445 3rd Ave South, Seattle, WA October 11, 2014 Grand Entry 6:00 PM Eastside Native American Veterans Powwow’ Juanita High School 10601 NE 132nd St Kirkland, WA 98034 Cowlitz Tribal Health [email protected] Seattle Clear Sky Native Youth www.urbannativeeducation.org Seattle Indian Health Board www.sihb.org United Indians of All Tribes [email protected] October 7-30th, 2014 T-Th 6:00-8:30 Tribal Language Circles UNEA/Clear Sky Youth Wilson/Pacific, Indian Heritage 90th and Stone Seattle Clear Sky Native Youth Council Mission: Collectively, promote and engage in cultural, traditional activities and educational achievement. Keys to Student Success Giving your student 20 minutes of focused attention on academics each day improves their academic success. This is uninterrupted time for you and your child to have a conversation about homework or reading, or to focus on academic tasks. Checking your student's backpack daily makes a difference. With a little detective work, you will be sure your student has what they need to be prepared for the next school day. Be involved in your child’s school and classroom. Attend Curriculum night, Open house, and Parent-Teacher conferences. It is very important for you to know what is expected for each grade level. Your child might need additional help in some areas. Visit your child’s classroom often and get to know your child’s teacher and other school staff. Let all school staff know you are interested in how your child is doing and how you can help. Sign up for the Source https://source.seattleschools.org. On Source you can track your student’s grades, homework assignments, check on missing work, and look at their assessments to see what areas, if any, they need to work on. The source has information on how to analyze their assessment scores. Make sure your contact information stays up to date. Be sure your child’s teacher and other school staff know how to get a hold of you quickly. Make it easy for your teacher to share information with you regarding your student. Have your child read at least 30 minutes a day at home. Children should read at least 30 minutes a day. Research shows this is an effective way to build your child’s reading skills. Read to your child or have them read aloud to you every day. Libraries are a great resource to help with academics (free on-line homework help). Get a library card for your child. Get Involved with the Parent Advisory Committee for Native Education. The PAC is a great way to show your children that education is a priority! Have a great school year! Tips compiled by Jenny L.
