PORTS OF CALL
◆
Rotterdam, The Netherlands – Often called the gateway to Europe, the port
city of Rotterdam is full of old-world charm, amazing views, a maze of wharves &
canals and towering spires. Check out Kijk-Kubus, a whimsical upside-down house.
Leixoes (Porto), Portugal – The twisting ancient streets lead to the prominent
Torre dos Clerigos, a baroque tower, a Romanesque cathedral and the unique
two-storied Dom Luis Bridge. Sample the region’s famous port wine in a variety
of tasting rooms and enjoy the ambience of the charming Ribeira district, one of the
oldest in Porto.
Lisbon, Portugal – Situated on a wide bay where the Tagus River meets the
Atlantic, the white facades of its ancient neighborhoods lead uphill to the iconic
Castelo de São Jorge. Visit the World Heritage Sites of Belém Tower and Jerónimos
Monastery, both built in Lisbon’s native Manueline architectural style.
Cadiz (Seville), Spain – In the very heart of Andalusian culture, Seville is the
center of bullfighting and Flamenco music. Walk the narrow lanes to the Plaza de
Espana, or stroll through the halls of the Museo de Bellas
Artes. Don’t forget to stop for tasty tapas.
Gibraltar, British Territory – Jutting off the southern
end of the Iberia Peninsula, the dominant feature is a 1,398foot-high, cave-riddled mass of limestone. The upper slopes
are covered in olive, pine and bouquets of the Gibraltar candytuft and the Barbary apes (macaques, really) can be seen playfully cavorting about.
Almeria, Spain – The city lies at the foot of a monstrous mountain range with
Alcazaba at its peak. Wander the streets and find displays of unique street art or
experience the reefs, dunes, and salt pond in Cabo deGata-Nijar Natural Park. Visit
Monsul beach where the long black sand lava beaches were used as a backdrop for the
filming of Indiana Jones.
Cartagena, Spain – Located in the southeast of Spain on the Mediterranean Sea,
this seaport town is walled, the harbor defended by forts, Roman ruins are scattered
throughout and is rich in ancient and maritime history.
Palma de Mallorca, Spain – Majorca, the largest island of the Balearic archipelago, is known for spectacular, warm & sunny beaches. In the capital city of Palma
de Majorca, you’ll find the historical city centre of the island, with stunning and
impressive buildings dating back to Roman and Muslim civilizations, narrow streets
and quiet courtyards, and the famous cathedral La Seo.
Barcelona, Spain – The city is a global capital of commerce, fashion, culture,
and sunshine (the city gets about 300 days of it a year). Walk down Las Ramblas –
the glorious tree-shaded thoroughfare at the heart of the city, enjoy one of the city’s
sandy beaches or visit visionary architect Antoni Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia, the Park
Guell, and Casa Mila.
