New Mom & Pop Restaurant Opens
Featured Business: Katsu Ramen Japanese Noodle House
1
After much anticipation, Katsu Ramen opened for
business on January 26 in the Birchtree Shopping Center
at 1930 S Havana. This is the second Havana District
Restaurant owned and operated by Chang Lee and Yumi
Ogai, who also own the very popular Sushi Katsu at 2222 S
Havana.
Traditional Japanese ramen noodles are prepared from
scratch daily by Katsu Ramen’s chef, who recently arrived in Aurora from Osaka,
Japan. The chef is a family friend of Chang and Yumi and has over 17 years’
experience. The ramen noodle bowls are big and hearty. The noodles are thick,
slightly chewy and delicious. Katsu Ramen has already earned 4 & 5 star ratings on
Yelp, with the primary drawback being the fact that after only a week they have
become extremely popular and the wait is long. The lines have been out the door at
lunch and dinner, wrapping around the building at times, with a reported 30-minute
wait to be seated. Their hours are listed as 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, but every day
since opening the crowds have been so large that they have sold out of ramen early.
As with any new business, getting up and going is challenging. Opening an incredible
mom & pop Japanese noodle house like Katsu Ramen in an area like the Havana
District, where area residents crave delicious ethnic food, increases this challenge
exponentially! Knowing Chang and Yumi, they will rise to the challenge and work
out the opening kinks. You can view their menu at www.ramendenver.com.
Ramen noodle bowls are priced from $9.25 to $9.85; rice bowls with miso soup
priced from $8.25 to $9.50.
Katsu Ramen is located on the SE corner of Jewell & Havana at 1930 S Havana, #5,
Aurora CO 80014, right next door to The English Teacup. They close for their own
lunch break between 3 and 4:30 p.m. If you go, we encourage you to get there right
before they open at 11 a.m. or at 4:30 p.m. when they reopen for dinner. The line
may be long, but the food is well worth the wait! We hear that you can give them
your name when you arrive and then can go explore and shop at The English Teacup
or go have a beer at Whispers in the same shopping center to pass the time
while you wait.

GROCERY CART RACES TO BENEFIT COMITIS CRISIS CENTER
3
No date has been set yet for the 2015 Grocery Cart Races
since Safeway has not been able to commit to a
date. Safeway and Albertsons are in the middle of
merger talks, which are expected to be finalized by midFebruary. Our Grocery Cart Race committee has a
meeting with Safeway on February 18, and we hope to be
able to set a late March or April date for the races at that
time.
Once we have a date and details worked out, we will post the information on the On
Havana Street.com website. We will also be calling all of the teams that have raced
in past years. This is a BIG fundraiser for Comitis, the only homeless shelter in
Aurora. We will be looking for new teams to compete this year too--watch the
website! (Pictured is the Leadership Aurora Team)

Redevelopment
Graffiti House Gone
The asbestos was cleared from the old house at 897 S
Havana (NW corner of kentucky & Havana) in
January. Demolition began on January 28. What was
supposed to take only a couple hours turned into an all
day project when the hydraulic line on the excavator
broke after only 5-6 bites into the building. The building
and all the debris have been removed from the site.

YOU JUST GOT A RAISE!
HAVANA MOTOR MILE
The date of this photo is July 2008. This is the Safeway gas station at Mexico &
Havana. Checking the GasBuddy.com website this morning, the current gas prices
are:
REGULAR $1.67/GAL
MIDGRADE $1.81/GAL
PREMIUM $1.95/GAL
WOW! You just got a raise! That's a savings per gallon of between $2.19 to
$2.22 today over the 2008 pricing!
According to the Federal Highway Administration, the average driver ages 20-34
years old in Colorado drives 15,098 miles/year and the average driver ages 35-54
drives 15,291 miles/year.
Assuming you drive an older sedan that gets a combined average of 19 miles per
gallon, that means you 35-54 year olds are buying 805 gallons per year. 805 gallons
x $2.22 = $1787/year that you are saving with the lower gas prices right now
10
compared to the 2008 pricing. That's almost an extra $150 per month that you can
now spend on a car payment instead of paying for gas.
Maybe it is time to think about updating your vehicle since you just got a
raise! With the lower gas prices, a new/gently used SUV or truck might be in your
future. The 2016 models are starting to come in at our Havana Motor Mile
Dealerships and there are some great deals on 2014 and 2015 models right
now. Visit the Havana Motor Mile page on the website to shop on line 24/7. Here is
