The Aberdeen Asset Management 2014/15 Farr 40 Australian Series 3
Welcome
Welcome to the Aberdeen Asset Management 2015 Farr 40
Victorian State Title.
Farr 40 Australia and Aberdeen Asset Management welcome all competitors
and spectators to the Aberdeen Asset Management Farr 40 Victorian State
Title being sailed on Port Phillip Bay.
Farr 40 sailing is a contest between evenly matched 40-foot racing boats,
helmed by their skilled and competitive amateur owners and guided by
world-renowned tacticians. The Farr 40 Class complies with strict One
Design rules, meaning the boat has been built to a specific design, and all
competing boats in the class are not permitted to make amendments to
the design. Any competitive advantage must be derived by the skill of the
skipper and the crew. Unique to the Farr 40 Class is that the One Design
rules are internationally governed and dictate an owner driver rule and
impose limitations on the number of professional crew members.
This year’s Victorian State Title is being hosted by the Sandringham Yacht
Club, Melbourne, Victoria.
We look forward to having Aberdeen clients aboard our Farr 40s for the
Twilight Race being held on Thursday evening and hope that all other
spectators enjoy a wonderful weekend of sailing on 29 January - 1 February
2015.

The Aberdeen Asset Management 2014/15 Farr 40 Australian Series
About Farr 40
One Design racing in Australia is widely celebrated through successful
classes such as Etchells and Dinghy Olympic classes including the Lasers
and 470s. The Farr 40 class follows similar principles in racing and complies
with specific One Design rules; boats have been built to a specific design
and competing boats in the class are not permitted to make amendments
to the design. Any competitive advantage must be derived by the skill of
the skipper and crew.
Unique to the Farr 40 class is that the One Design rules are internationally
governed, dictate an owner driver rule and impose limitations on number
of professional crew members.
The Farr 40 fleet in Australia consists of 25 boats, 18 of which will compete
in the 2014/15 Farr 40 Australian Series.
Crews in this Class consist of yachting luminaries such as Tom Slingsby,
Malcolm Page, Mathew Belcher, Nathan Outteridge & Nina Curtis – all successful competitors in the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Boat
Melbourne based Builder and Property Investor Rob Pitts
will make his debut in Farr 40 sailing at the Victorian State
Title. Double Black was previously known as Bribie Star,
and before that, Brighton Star, and originally started life at
Sandringham Yacht Club as Young Australia.
Boat Captain Chris (Billy) Idle has been a tremendous
support to the Farr 40 Class in organising our first regatta
in Melbourne.
The crew of Double Black have been sailing together for
approximately five years and have previously competed
in various club events in the well-known Young 11 “Wide
Load”.
The boat was purchased in 2014 with a view to looking
at some more serious racing and developing a core crew
that could potentially race at a national level. The crew
have found Farr 40 a very rewarding boat to sail and fun
in all conditions.
Tactician Jake Newman, a Belmont based builder joined
the Double Black crew for the Festival of Sails and recently
competed in his tenth Sydney to Hobart. He has also
recently competed in the National Etchells Championship
aboard Triad, skippered by sailing legend, John Bertrand.
Sailing on home waters, coupled with extensive
experience, could make Double Black a considerable
threat to the rest of the fleet and we hope Rob and the
crew enjoy their first Farr 40 regatta.

Jeff Carter and the Edake crew have been competing
in Farr 40 regattas since 2006. The green Corinthian
Leader flag can often be seen flying from the Edake
forestay and Jeff has his sights set on a podium position
at the inaugural Victorian State Title.
It’s a huge commitment for Corinthian competitors to
transport their boat and crew members interstate and
the Edake team are looking forward to competing for
the first time on Port Phillip Bay.
CYC Youth Sailing Academy Graduate Evan Walker will
be teaming up with Jeff as Tactician for Edake. Evan
is a two time winner of the Hardy Cup which is one
of Australia’s most prestigious match racing events.
Evan has been sailing with Jeff for three years and this
dynamic duo will certainly be one to watch.
The crew consists of long-time mainsail trimmer Noel
Holder, Jeff’s son Lachlan on mast, youthful talent
including Jaidan Stevens, Paul Darmanin, Tim Lake and
Nicky Hodgson and experienced Farr 40 sailors Morgan
White and Scott Francis.
Whilst it’s serious faces on the water, the Edake crew
have a great time enjoying the camaraderie which the
Class is renowned for.

Queensland based Rod Jones is another new member to
the Class. Rod predominantly sails out of the Mooloolaba
Yacht Club however will keep his newly purchased Farr 40,
Kindergarten, at the Middle Harbour Yacht Club for the
2014/15 season.
Sail No. 5868
Formerly a SB20 sailor, Rod was keen to convert to Farr
40 sailing with the likelihood of the Rolex Farr 40 World
Championships coming to Sydney in 2016. Kindergarten
has entered the Professional division and it is hoped this
experience will put them in good stead for the Worlds.

One Design Trophy held at Pittwater where they took out a
stunning second place overall, just 3 points behind reigning
National Champion Guido Belgiorno-Nettis and 1 point
ahead of Lang Walker’s Kokomo – not a bad result for their
maiden voyage into Farr 40 racing!

having joined his father’s sailmaking business which was

The Richardson family joined the Farr 40 Class in 2014

and the crew consists of Trevor and Di, their sons Steven
and Stuart and Steven’s daughter Chloe. If the family
are not working together running their Geelong based
family concrete and quarry business, they can be found
sailing somewhere on the east coast of Australia on one
of their boats.
Local Mocean is kept at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club
and is one of two boats which make up the newly
formed Victorian Farr 40 fleet. Entered in the Corinthian
division, the Richardson family are looking forward to
sailing on local waters in the inaugural Victorian State
Title.
Former Australian 49er Champion Kirwan Robb will be

Five time National Champion Guido Belgiorno-Nettis
and the Transfusion crew certainly have the winning
formula when it comes to Farr 40 racing. Guido has
been sailing in the Class for eight years and has recently
stepped down after a two year term as President.
When it comes to crew selection, some of the biggest
names in the sport can be found aboard Transfusion.

sailing since she was 5 years old and comes from a
famous sailing family including brother Jimmy Spithill
– Skipper of Oracle Team USA who recently won the
America’s Cup held in San Francisco in 2013. Growing
up on Pittwater, Katie’s only transport home was by
boat so it’s no wonder she is following in her family’s
footsteps as a successful young sailor.
The core of the Transfusion team consists of Olympic
and America’s Cup veteran Bob Wilmot, talented
trimmer Sam Williams, 2011 Crewman of the Year Pete
Sheldrick, renowned bowman Mitch White, Strategist
Mike Leigh who is currently ranked second in the ISAF

Gordon Ketelbey’s Sydney 38 has been berthed
alongside Transfusion and Edake at Middle Harbour

Guido Belgiorno-Nettis and Jeff Carter plenty of

and purchased one of the Transfusion boats, now
renamed Zen.

Gordon’s debut at the 2014 One Design Trophy at
