Farr 40 Australia and Aberdeen Asset Management welcome all competitors and spectators to the Aberdeen Asset Management Farr 40 Victorian State Title being sailed on Port Phillip Bay. Farr 40 sailing is a contest between evenly matched 40-foot racing boats, helmed by their skilled and competitive amateur owners and guided by world-renowned tacticians. The Farr 40 Class complies with strict One Design rules, meaning the boat has been built to a specific design, and all competing boats in the class are not permitted to make amendments to the design. Any competitive advantage must be derived by the skill of the skipper and the crew. Unique to the Farr 40 Class is that the One Design rules are internationally governed and dictate an owner driver rule and impose limitations on the number of professional crew members. This year’s Victorian State Title is being hosted by the Sandringham Yacht Club, Melbourne, Victoria. We look forward to having Aberdeen clients aboard our Farr 40s for the Twilight Race being held on Thursday evening and hope that all other spectators enjoy a wonderful weekend of sailing on 29 January - 1 February 2015. The Farr 40 fleet in Australia consists of 25 boats, 18 of which will compete in the 2014/15 Farr 40 Australian Series. Crews in this Class consist of yachting luminaries such as Tom Slingsby, Malcolm Page, Mathew Belcher, Nathan Outteridge & Nina Curtis – all successful competitors in the London 2012 Olympic Games. Double Black was previously known as Bribie Star, and before that, Brighton Star, and originally started life at Sandringham Yacht Club as Young Australia. Boat Captain Chris (Billy) Idle has been a tremendous support to the Farr 40 Class in organising our first regatta in Melbourne. The crew of Double Black have been sailing together for approximately five years and have previously competed in various club events in the well-known Young 11 “Wide Load”. The boat was purchased in 2014 with a view to looking at some more serious racing and developing a core crew that could potentially race at a national level. The crew have found Farr 40 a very rewarding boat to sail and fun in all conditions. Tactician Jake Newman, a Belmont based builder joined the Double Black crew for the Festival of Sails and recently competed in his tenth Sydney to Hobart. He has also recently competed in the National Etchells Championship aboard Triad, skippered by sailing legend, John Bertrand. Sailing on home waters, coupled with extensive experience, could make Double Black a considerable threat to the rest of the fleet and we hope Rob and the crew enjoy their first Farr 40 regatta.
