UNDERSTANDING THE RCN, RCNVR, RCNR and RCN(R)
The Royal Canadian Navy came into existence in 1910 (and thus
celebrated its Centennial year in 2010). The RCN is the regular
force navy of Canada. The Royal Navy Canadian Volunteer Reserve
(RNCVR) is the reserve force of the RCN and came into existence on
14 May 1914.
The letters RNCVR were used initially for this
organization.
During WWI, 6,000 men had served in the RNCVR
manning 136 small patrol vessels. The RNCVR was disbanded on 15
June 1920.
The Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve (RCNVR - Wavy
Navy) came into existence on 31 January 1923 with a half-company
in Montreal.
Officers could be distinguished from the RCN
regular force officers because the RCNVR officer wore wavy rank
stripes.
Also in 1923, the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve (RCNR) came
into existence. It comprised men who had a seafaring career in
foreign-going,
coastal,
fishing
or
other
vessels.
The
Fishermen’s Reserve came into being in 1937 and was a branch of
the RCNR. It was made up largely of fishermen as the name would
suggest.
In November 1945, the RCNVR and the RCNR were amalgamated
into what was now called the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve, the
RCN(R).
The RCNVR and RCNR no longer existed but because each
had separate ribbons for their decorations and medals, it was
decided that the RCNVR ribbons would be used. These decorations
and medals were thus used until the Canadian Forces Decoration
came into being on 15 December 1949. Anybody serving in any of
the reserve branches before 01 September 1939 remained eligible
for the reserve medals but all those after that date would now
receive the CD.
