(Regular orienteers excluded. ) It was an overwhelming response---more than twice as many entries as ever before. This was largely thanks to Paul Hoopman, Des Norman and Kay Haarsma for coaching new schools’teams. However there were some down sides: the Loud Hailer was obviously not heard by everyone eg where North was! And the non-electronic way of processing the results didn’t stand up under the strain, hence a few question marks among the results. The Pink Hats saved even more DNFs than there were. I think it shows clearly that Grade 3s (unless they are regular weekend orienteers) should not take part in a competition where they are seen to fail. It cannot have been a happy experience for a lot of the Primary teams. On the other hand some showed they could run FAST....the Primary legs in less than 20 minutes... and should seriously consider learning more skills by coming to weekend events. And/or the schools could make more use of schools warm-ups put on by the Association in Terms 2 and 3.(Find out the details from our website).
