Neoss Australia presents
MELBOURNE 7
Dr Rob Aitken BDS
Something old, Something new,
Something borrowed & Something to do!
We all want to have success in implant dentistry, but with the explosion in implant options
and the continual release of new and often un-researched materials and techniques, failure
can be expensive for the Patient and the Dentist.
Dr Rob Aitken presented his first day programme in Melbourne over 20 years ago.
th
Back then, there were only a handful of implant companies, Oral Surgeons placed the
implants under a strictly controlled surgical protocol and only trained Dentists and
Technicians restored them. Once integrated, implants were believed to be almost
invincible.

20 years on, the dental implant world has changed totally, often to the detriment of our
patients and our profession. What have we learned in the last two decades, what do we
do now and more importantly, how could this shape the future for successful treatment
outcomes? This day presentation critically considers our understanding of implant
treatments, surfaces, materials, restorative techniques and componentry.

Something old: What did we do and what did we learn?
Something new: What do we do now and what are the clinical outcomes?
Something borrowed: How can we learn from failure?
Something to do: What does todays implant componentry look like?
Everyday challenges including patient assessment, what to do with “the failed implant
case from overseas” and what the best material option is for the final implant restoration
are also discussed. Included in the program will be an overview of Maxillary full fixed
implant reconstruction, case presentations illustrating key planning and prosthetic steps
followed by an interactive workshop and open forum.
ELIGIBLE FOR 7 CPD HOURS
Dr Rob Aitken received his dental degree from Otago University, in 1969, and after two years
as a Dental Registrar went into general practice in Hamilton in the T & G Buildings from
October 1971 to June 1985.
He then established a Private/Group Dental Practice
“Collingwood Dental Care” from June 1985 to May 2001 and then a solo/restricted implant
Dental Practice “The Pembroke Practice” from June 2001 until he sold in July 2013. He has
now moved to join Andrew and Tasha Mackie, Specialist Prosthodontist and Periodontist in
their Hamilton Practice.
He trained in osseointegration ad modem Brånemark at Sydney University in 1987 and has
over 20 years experience in osseointegrated dentistry. He extended his implant education with
post-graduate study in Australia and the United States and has had extensive experience as a
lecturer and presenter in implant restoration in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Asia.
In his day-to-day practice, Rob’s approach is that of a general practitioner offering the range of
today’s treatment options, but with an emphasis on the unique solutions that implant supported
restorations offer.
Five years ago Rob was appointed Principal Dental Officer with the Waikato District Health
Board. He sees this position an exciting challenge at this stage in his career. New Zealand
Dental Therapists are the “front line troops”, not only in the treatment of dental disease, but
also in guiding young New Zealanders down the pathway to a sound dental future. He sees his
key role as providing support and assistance to Therapists and facilitating communication and
coordination within the health services.
